Spotlight - the best smartphones of 2009

Author: Matt Sharp

This year has seen some properly brilliant smartphones arrive on the market, and now it's time for the best devices out there. Let's take a look at the main contenders for most incredibly phone of 2009.

Nokia N900

We begin by acknowledging the best smartphone in Nokia's catalogue. Their newest smartphone is the first of a new breed; it's the first mobile phone ever to be powered by the brilliant Maemo OS (which was previously to be found only in the Finnish manufacturer's range of internet tablets). Give a warm welcome to the Nokia N900. The Maemo OS provides the Nokia N900 with a touch friendly UI, and on top of that, the phone comes with an integrated QWERTY keypad, meaning that it has more methods of interacting with the phone than ever before. It's not only about the UI, though, since the Nokia N900 is packed to the gills with top-end features. A 5 megapixel camera lets you take beautiful photos, the multimedia player is stunning, and with HSDPA and GPS, the Nokia N900 certainly isn't short of connectivity options.

Palm Pre

On the other hand, when it comes to interfaces, there's one phone beats both of the other handsets on this article, without a doubt: the unique Palm Pre. This is simply because the Palm Pre is runs on a completely bespoke UI known as WebOS, which is easily the slickest, most user-friendly UI which has ever been made. Using intuitive gesture controls and finger sweeps for EVERY action on the phone, the Palm Pre also gives you tight integration between its apps. Book a ticket for the movies using one app, and the Palm Pre automatically updates the calendar with the time. Multitask many powerful apps, and be amazed as you watch the Palm Pre scream along without even breaking a sweat. When it comes to interfaces, basically, the Palm Pre is unbeatable!

HTC HD2

So, there is the Nokia N900 with that Maemo operating system, and then there's the Palm Pre, which sports WebOS. And finally there's the HTC HD2; it holds the record for the biggest display found on a mobile phone. At a whopping 4.3 inches, it is simply gigantic, and the high, 800x480 resolution makes it incredibly easy to interact with things such as scrollbars in menus. However, the HTC HD2 actually does a brilliant job of making it so you do not need to go into the normal Windows menus that often, because sitting atop the operating system, the UI is HTC's patented Sense UI, where everything is achieved through various finger swipes and sweeping motions. It is incredibly simple to use, and it (as well as the lightning fast 1GHz Snapdragon processor) is what makes the HTC HD2 such a pleasure to use. Of course, it's not all about being raw processing power, a phone needs to have good features and the HTC HD2 has them in spades, from the 5 megapixel camera, through GPS, to incredibly fast HSDPA internet access (not to mention the superb Opera Mobile web browser), which is why many people see it as the best mobile phone EVER.

Phone of the year - Nokia vs HTC vs Palm

Author: Matt Sharp

This year has seen a selection of astonishingly awesome smartphones arrive on shelves, and now it's time for the cream of the crop. Let's have a look at three of the contenders for most incredibly phone of 2009.

Nokia N900

We start with the most advanced smartphone in Finnish manufacturer Nokia's catalogue. Their latest smartphone is the first of a new breed; it is the first phone in history to be powered by the new Maemo interface (heretofore seen in Nokia's selection of tablet computers). Give a warm welcome to the Nokia N900. That Maemo OS gives the Nokia N900 a touch friendly user interface, and in addition to that, the device comes with an integrated QWERTY keypad, so it has therefore got more ways to access the phone than ever before. It's not only about the UI, though, because the Nokia N900 is full to bursting with high-end features. A 5 megapixel camera lets you take superb photos, the multimedia player is stunning, and best of all, the Nokia N900 has a web browser, based on the world famous Firefox browser, which even supports Flash.

Palm Pre

However, if you're talking about the phone's interface, one phone beats both of the other handsets in this list, hands down: the innovative Palm Pre. You see, the Palm Pre is designed on a completely custom operating system called WebOS, that is definitely the slickest, most intuitive OS that's ever been released. Along with intuitive gesture controls and finger sweeps for EVERY action on the phone, the Palm Pre also brings in tight synergy between its various apps. Book a ticket for the movies using one app, and the Palm Pre immediately updates your calendar with the time. Multitask loads of different apps, and be amazed as you watch the Palm Pre scream along without slowing down at all. When it comes to interfaces, basically, the Palm Pre is unbeatable!

HTC HD2

So, we have the Nokia N900 with its Maemo interface, and then you've got the Palm Pre, which features WebOS. And then you have the HTC HD2; it holds the record for the largest display seen on a mobile phone. At a huge 4.3 inches, it is truly vast, and the WVGA, 800x480 resolution makes it incredibly easy to interact with things like scrollbars and drop-down menus. However, the HTC HD2 actually does a brilliant job of making it so you do not need to drill down into the normal Windows menus very often, since sitting atop the operating system, the operating system is HTC's patented Sense UI, where every interaction happens through a range of finger swipes and sweeping motions. It is incredibly simple to use, and it (along with the truly awesome 1GHz Snapdragon CPU) is what makes the HTC HD2 such an unmitigated joy to use. Of course, it's not all about being raw processing power, a phone has to have decent features and the HTC HD2 has them in spades, from the 5 megapixel camera, through GPS, to incredibly fast HSDPA internet access (not to mention the superb Opera Mobile web browser), which is why many people see it as the best mobile phone EVER.

The most exciting smartphones of 2009!

Author: Matt Sharp

There are many smartphones on the market, but only a few can be the best. Let's take a look at three now, that could even be considered the best of the best.

Palm Pre

There's a new kind on the block, that aims to take the smartphone crown all for itself. The Nokia N97 goes for raw power, but what the new Palm Pre goes for is sheer elegance. Using the brand new, never-before-seen WebOS at its core, the Palm Pre takes touch-friendly interfaces and innovative design to an entirely new level. Take, for example, the new Fandango app that should be available when the Palm Pre is launched. It's an online cinema booking service, that lets you buy tickets and watch trailers on the phone. The Palm Pre will also put an automatic reminder in your calendar, and contact people who are going with you, to organise getting there. That's what makes the Palm Pre great.

HTC HD2

To get the best from Windows Mobile, you really need a phone with a fast processor, a big screen, and a custom user interface on top. Well now, there's a new kid in town, called the HTC HD2, and it fulfils all three of those criteria. Not only that, but as well as the custom interface, it has the biggest screen of any mobile phone, and the fastest processor, coming in at 4.3 inches, and 1GHz, respectively. The HTC HD2 is quite simply the most powerful Windows Mobile phone out there.

Nokia N900

So, there's the Palm Pre with WebOS, and there's the HTC HD2, with Windows Mobile. But there's another contender out there. The Nokia N900 shocked a great many people when it was announced earlier this year, and the main reason for the excitement it's generated is that it's the first ever phone to use the sleek, intuitive Maemo interface, making for a touchscreen experience that is both simple, and entertaining. The Nokia N900 also includes a full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, so that after you've navigated through the cool menus, actually typing that text message or email is going to easier than ever. Nokia are billing the N900 as a true mobile multimedia computer, a view backed up by the keyboard and incredible interface. However, the Nokia N900 also has its fair share of features to earn that title. You get a 5 megapixel camera for pin-sharp photos, you get a superb multimedia centre, that makes music and movies so compelling. You also get HSDPA internet access, at true broadband speeds, and GPS. Put simply, the Nokia N900 is astounding.

The best smartphone OSes of 2008 - still awesome in 2009

Author: Matt Sharp

Three operating systems have made the jump from 2008 to 2009 in style, and as we approach the end of THIS year, let's take a look at phones offer the best incarnations of Symbian, Windows Mobile and Android.

Samsung i8910 HD

First up, we have the Samsung i8910 HD, and it has one big advantage over the other two. Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Never before has a phone been able to capture video at that massive high resolution, and coincidentally (or is it coincidence? Maybe not...), the Samsung i8910 HD captures high-def video at the exact quality that Youtube display high-def videos at. It's very possible that the Samsung i8910 HD was designed with its main feature being the ability to get yourself on Youtube, in high-definition. Combine that with the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung i8910 HD deserves to be one of the phones of the year!

HTC HD2

There's little doubt that Windows Mobile is one of the big operating systems in the world. However, to get the best out of it, you really need a phone with a fast processor, a big screen, and a custom user interface on top, the wonderful Sense UI.

HTC Hero

So, for Symbian, the best choice is the Samsung i8910 HD. And then, for Windows Mobile, there's the HTC HD2. Android is trying to take over the world, and its best home is the beautiful HTC Hero. It has all the good stuff that made the first Android phone (the G1) good, but puts it all in a touchscreen-only body, which is both sleek and sexy. Since the keyboard has been removed, the HTC Hero also has a full, onscreen keyboard, and a sumptuous new interface called Sense. You also get the Android Marketplace, which lets you download and install third party apps to your HTC Hero, and it ends up creating a smartphone that really can morph into whatever you want it to be.
