Blackberry 9500 storm - The much awaited touchscreen arrives

Author: Stephen George

Yet another addition to the highly successful business phones from Blackberry, the BlackBerry 9500 Storm is RIM's first touchscreen phone. Much of the design has been incorporated from the Blackberry Bold 9000. The phone comes with a large 3.25 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen and is supported by an accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate. This device is loaded with an internal memory of 1GB but it can be conveniently expanded up to 16GB. However the standard package of the phone comes with an 8GB microSD card for the card slot. The device is on a heavier side with a weight of 155 grams and is presently available only in the colour Black. The powerful battery forms most of the bulk but it looks impressive with a talk time of more than 5 hours and a standby time for almost 15 days.

The Storm is a Quad-band GSM phone but is also capable of 3G connectivity. HSDPA allows fast data downloading. This one lacks a real QWERTY keyboard which is considered as the most important feature of any successful business device. However the phone comes with a virtual on-screen keyboard with two versions- a SureType virtual keyboard (like the one in Blackberry Pearl) to be used in the portrait mode and a broader QWERTY keypad for the landscape mode. The built-in accelerometer sensor automatically facilitates in switching the two modes when the phone is rotated. The enhanced UI of the Storm supports multi-touch inputs, slides as well as taps just like the iPhone. It uses a Blackberry OS and runs on a 528 MHz processor from Qualcomm. This device is loaded with a Class10 GPRS and a Class10 EDGE and employs an HTML browser for browsing the internet. The built-in GPS receiver has A-GPS support which can be coupled with the Blackberry Maps application that has been included in the handset to provide excellent satellite navigation.

The Blackberry 9500 Storm allows Email and Instant Messaging. It also comes with a 3.15 mega pixel camera at the back of the body. Features like auto-focus, LED flash, geo-tagging and image stabilisation have been included apart from video recording in QVGA mode. The included media player appears to be very versatile and can playback MP3, WMA, AAC+, MP4, 3gp, H.264 and WMV formats. Also included in the ensemble are Document editor (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF), Organiser, Voice dial and Voice memo that makes the phone a complete business device.

A Sneak Peek into the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2

Author: Simon Drew

The Initial Reaction

It is here, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 has finally made it into the microscope of public scrutiny. The specs are nothing short of impressive. Just as what one would expect from electronics and mobile phone giant Sony; but before we can even begin dissecting this phone, the external features require a serious degree of review as well.

One refreshingly cool change is the fact that this phone does not look as fragile as other touch screen phones. Where other mobile devices are sporting curves, the X2 has edges. Sony has traded in the glass-looking gloss finish of other mobile devices in exchange with the gray metal finish of the Xperia X2.

The best thing is, Sony’s many years of designing electronics shines in the way the X2 has been executed. The Xperia X2 is both edgy and classy, retaining the sophisticated feel of a smart phone while still looking tough enough for you to enjoy more and worry less.

The Inside Look

The processor is really good; it is able to load windows mobile version 6.5 pretty fast without unnecessary load times. The response of the touch screen to finger movements and tapping the screen is fast. The graphics refresh at a high rate but does not cause the phone any slowdown as well. Running applications is pretty much the same; they load fast and function quickly. There were some slow down problems when running windows mobile 6.1, but these are caused by windows instead of the mobile phone itself.

With the announcement that the X2 will be the last Sony phone to suffer windows mobile, the next one should fare a whole lot better in terms of performance. In the mean while, the X2 is reported to be compatible with the Windows Mobile version 7 and the built in windows mobile operating system can be upgraded.

Quick Spec Sheet Summary

A huge part of what makes the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 a good phone is the fact that it comes with some pretty good hardware. The camera is a generous 8.1 mega pixels that is complemented by LED flash and auto focus features. Another nice feature is the expandable internal memory –which you should upgrade since the built in amount is rather small. Fortunately, if you cannot update memory yet, you can use the SD card slot using the 4GB SD card that comes along with the mobile phone.

Which interfaces make for the greatest mobile phones?

Author: Matt Sharp

In 2009, the interface on a mobile phone is one of the most important factors in it being a success. Let's take a look at three of the most powerful OSes on the planet.

Samsung I7500

The first important fact about the Samsung I7500, and the bit that has made it so talked about, is its operating system: Google Android. As it's only the second phone to officially go on sale using Android, the Samsung I7500 has garnered an awful lot of trade and consumer interest. Even more importantly, the Samsung I7500 is the best-looking Android phone to feature a keyboard-less, touchscreen-only design, a thing that seems to be all the rage in 2009. It's easily more of a looker than any previous Android phones, and that fusion of enhanced looks and the still-awesome power of Android makes the Samsung I7500 a very compelling phone indeed. If innovation is your thing, this is the phone for you.

Toshiba TG01

Windows Mobile haven't been resting on their laurels, and the new fruit of their labours is the ultra-powerful Toshiba TG01. Not only does it have the biggest screen ever seen on a mobile phone, measuring in at 4.1 inches, but the Toshiba TG01 also has the most powerful processor put into a mobile phone. Dubbed Snapdragon, the 1GHz processor gives the Toshiba TG01 power, and lots of it, and since that's what's needed to let Windows Mobile live up to its full potential, the Toshiba TG01 is arguably the best WinMo phone that's ever been announced.

One thing's for sure, though, the Toshiba TG01 is definitely the most powerful phone on this list.

Palm Pre

So, there's the Toshiba TG01, with a ludicrously fast processor and Windows Mobile. And then, there's the Samsung I7500, which puts Android in the best-looking shell it's ever been in. What does the Palm Pre offer that's different? Well, one could talk about the WebOS interface it uses, as it's unique in the annals of phone history. And indeed, there's one feature of WebOS, directly related to the keyboard, that makes the Palm Pre so cool. Universal search. Now, many phones do that, but the Palm Pre does it so much more cleverly. Just start typing what you want to know about, from the front screen, and the Palm Pre will search your contacts, apps, music, pictures, and even the internet, to interpret and find what you're looking for. That really is a cool feature, and it may well make the Palm Pre the coolest QWERTY phone out there. If you value the interface above all else, the Palm Pre is the phone for you.

Get ready - the Palm Pre is coming to the UK!

Author: Matt Sharp

The Palm Pre is finally coming to the UK in October! Let's take a look at it, and its main competitors for your money.

Palm Pre

HTC Touch Pro2

Next up is the HTC Touch Pro2, and here, you get the added benefit of a QWERTY keyboard. However, like the previous TyTN II, with the HTC Touch Pro2, you can also tilt the screen up after sliding it open, putting it at a more natural viewing angle. In terms of other hardware, the HTC Touch Pro2 also gives you a 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA internet access (as well as WiFi), and GPS, putting it right up there in the top echelon of mobile phones. Software-wise, the HTC Touch Pro2 is powered by Windows Mobile, but, like an increasing number of Windows Mobile phones, it uses a proprietary interface on top (TouchFLO 3D, again, as with the Touch Diamond2), that takes the power of Windows Mobile, and makes it user-friendly. All in all, the HTC Touch Pro2 is one incredible mobile phone.

HTC Hero

So, there's the HTC Touch Pro2, which relies on raw power to make Windows Mobile truly awesome. And then, there's the Palm Pre, which wows you with the phenomenal WebOS. However, there's an open source alternative to those two. Android is trying to take over the world, and its new home is the beautiful HTC Hero. It has all the good stuff that made the first Android phone (the G1) good, but puts it all in a touchscreen-only body, which is both sleek and sexy. Since the keyboard has been removed, the HTC Hero also has a full, onscreen keyboard, and a sumptuous new interface called Sense. You also get the Android Marketplace, which lets you download and install third party apps to your HTC Hero, and it ends up creating a smartphone that really can morph into whatever you want it to be. Based purely on that logic, the HTC Hero ably demonstrates just why Android is such a threat to the incumbent operating systems, but can it beat the Palm Pre? Honestly, I don't think it will...

A Test against Time! Running Windows 7 on Old Computers

Author: Myles Patterson

With both the U.S. and Canada now showing signs of recovery from the recession, Microsoft is about to unveil it’s newly, much anticipated, and critically acclaimed, Windows 7 to be in stores and on computers October 22nd 2009. With XP entering retirement status and Windows 7 to take over, what about computers that have 6 years and then some of service with corporations, and small businesses, will these computers become subject to recycling?

With each new operating system Microsoft has released in the past dating back to before Windows 95 and 98, there have always been hardware, and peripheral, upgrades to mandate compliance with the new operating systems, and Windows 7 is no different. But with Windows 7, even though to get the full effects, and features, of the new OS system these upgrades are necessary. Windows 7 candidate release has been tested, and recognised though several computer forums to work better, and faster, than XP on computers manufactured and sold prior to Vista released in November 2006.

This is important to recognize because Windows 7 design base, is from the Vista platform that Microsoft stripped and rebuilt from scratch to maintain compatibility with the hardware of today’s computers. They simplified the structure of the basics to meet the needs of the tablet PC that has very little memory, or disk space, to run a complicated OS system. Hence will be Windows 7 Basic sku or product offering available in October 2009 and is also attributed as to why Windows 7 is able to run so well on older computers.

Any computer that was purchased since the November 2006 release of vista will be able to run Windows 7 with no problem. Why? Because Windows 7 was designed from the vista platform, in fact if you feel so inclined you can go to www.msdn.com and download a tool called Windows 7 Upgrade analyzer that will run a scan of your computer and tell you if your computer meets the requirements. It will also tell what you need to do to fix or update some programs or drivers to be compliant with the upgrade. You can also find the minimum requirements your computer needs to run windows 7 at this website. With computers that were purchased before the above date, I would also check the above website and run the analyzer, for compliance to make sure you get the full benefit of running this new and terrific product.

The good news is that Microsoft will support any computer with Windows 7 that could or will run the Vista platform which dates back to 3 years ago. The bad news is at this time they will not support Windows 7 on a machine that predates this era of computers; however they are encouraged and interested with the findings, testing, and forums in this regard. Since its release in November 2001 XP has run its course in time, by being Microsoft’s first and only OS system that has run for 9 years of accredited service to date. But times have changed, the way we communicate has changed, the way we do business has changed, and although history is important, it’s futures, and innovation, that spurs growth. And with Windows 7 being in development for 3 years, which is longer than any operating system Microsoft has released to date, this product is ready to meet and exceed all expectations, with speed, stability, security, and simplicity, with jaw dropping features given it has the required basic attributes to run.

Microsoft has really done their homework with this, the next generation of computing. This is our future, your future, and with the North American continent now showing signs of recovery it’s time to seek the information tools you need today for a brighter tomorrow. Windows 7 is ready for you, and is available to you now though pre ordering and will be in stores next month, but are you and your computer ready for Windows 7?

Should you require additional information please feel free to email me through my website at http://www.mhpenterprises.com

Thank You

What Are The Main Computer Network Security Threats?

Author: Derek Rogers

Whether you are looking to protect a small network in your home or one that is the foundation of your business, you will find that it is first important to understand what kind of threats you might be facing. As soon as you have a computer hooked up in order to connect to the network, you will find that there is a chance that it can be exposed to a number of different risks. When you are thinking about what you can do to make a system a great deal more secure, you will find that an understanding of the risks that you are vulnerable to is something that can help a great deal.

First and perhaps most obviously, is the threat of a virus. While the majority of viruses are simply annoying, there are definitely viruses that can damage your network's hardware, software, or both. For the most part, a virus is an executable file that will be spread by human means and will require someone to open it before it can do its work on the network. When looking at virus threats, it is worth understanding worms as well, which are considered a subset of viruses. Worms do not need human help to propagate themselves, and in fact one example of the way that they work is to turn your computer into an email server that will distribute copies of themselves.

When looking into network security threats, though, it is very important to consider what risks may be present from inside the system. First and foremost, the idea of bad architecture must be considered. If a network is mis-configured in the first place, it can be a very tempting target for people who are looking to get on it. One obvious example of this would be leaving a wireless network unsecured so that anyone with a network card could get onto it. This can certainly happen in a broader and more disastrous scope.

Interestingly enough, one of the most common measures taken to save time is also one that leaves network systems shockingly vulnerable. Consolidating a lot of services to one machine is a common measure for saving time and resources. It is easy to manage and simple to maintain, but if this single machine is compromised, there is a great deal of harm that can happen. While accidental failure is one thing, there is also the concern regarding the ease with which a single machine could be manipulated. In this case, the answer is frequently redundancy.

Computer network security is something that is very important, and if the information that you are safeguarding has anything to do with money or with personal information, it will achieve even a higher priority. Take some time and think about your system and think about whether it is vulnerable to any of the threats above. The more security that you can provide, the better off you will be. The protection of both your company and your customer depend on this aspect of your company's working, so always consider what network security means to you.

Google in Mobile 2009

Author: Bharat Book Bureau

Google in Mobile 2009

Having created, developed, grown and maintained the world's most popular internet search engine over the last decade, Google has turned its attentions to the mobile market. For the last few years, many of its web services and applications have been making their way to the mobile platform, as the take-up has increased at recession-defying rates for mobile web access and, most notably, for smartphones such as the iPhone and various BlackBerry models. Illustrating just how much is at stake, and how intense competition has begun for the mobile space, a new phase of rivalry between Google and Apple opened with the resignation of Google CEO Eric Schmidt from the Apple Board of Directors. In terms of products, a Google Voice native iPhone application failed to win approval for entry into the iTunes App Store. ( http://www.bharatbook.com/Market-Research-Reports/Google-in-Mobile-2009.html )

The stakes are increasing for Google, which is focusing more and more on operating systems and runtime environments for applications on mobile. While developing and extending the reach of its Android platform, Google is also concurrently pushing browser standards such as Chrome and Android, and is actively involved in defining HTML 5. Alongside Chrome OS, these initiatives form key aspects in a greater push towards cloud computing and the web as a development platform at the expense of operating systems, native programming environments, and therefore mobile app stores - one of the tech sector's most recent success stories. With services and applications available directly over the web rather than via downloads, Google could be well positioned to exploit the increasing number of opportunities in its main area of interest, digital advertising.

Should you be working with Google today? Will they be the major player in mobile search technology or have they become too large to develop truly innovative dedicated products?

The latest report Google in Mobile 2009 provides valuable information to Google's strategy in the mobile market. It examines the threat posed to others by Google as the company becomes increasingly more involved in the sector. It also analyses the opportunities that exist for operators and manufacturers. How can you benefit from Google in mobile? Can you afford not to work with them and miss out?

Reading this report will tell you the following:
• What are Google's motives for entering the mobile platform?
• What acquisitions have Google carried out and what reason?
• What services have been made available on mobile?
• Which other services have the potential to be moved to mobile?

Feature Phones - taking over from smartphones in 2009?

Author: Matt Sharp

We've reached a point where feature phones are nearly as smart as smartphones, and in some key areas (like their cameras), they even BEAT smartphones. Let's take a look at three of the best.

Samsung Jet

The Samsung Jet is all about one thing: speed. And to make it mind-bendingly quick, the Samsung Jet has a processor running at 800MHz, faster than just about any other phone currently on sale. Combine that with a beautiful 3D 'Cubic' interface, and the Samsung Jet becomes a true work of art, that's both easy and rewarding to use. As for features, you get a 5MP camera, and lightning fast internet access, making the Samsung Jet the obvious choice if you want a non-smartphone that's nearly as powerful as a true smartphone.

LG Viewty Smart

There's a phone out there that fits the phrase 'phone that's nearly a smartphone, without actually being a smartphone': the aptly named LG Viewty Smart. Following on from the original Viewty, the LG Viewty Smart follows the same design ethos of having a touchscreen only interface (the awesome S-Class interface), squeezed into a slim body, but it ups the ante with a superb 8MP camera. It also has HSDPA, making it a truly portable internet device. Put simply, the LG Viewty Smart is the smartest non-smartphone in the world, and it's largely down to the interface. Built around a 3D cube, S-Class gives the LG Viewty a user-friendly and sleek interface, it is designed to be simple and intuitive.

Samsung Pixon 12

The Samsung Jet impresses with its fast processor, and the LG Viewty Smart is clearly an excellent camera phone. But what if there was a camera with an insanely powerful 12MP camera available? That's exactly what you get with the Samsung Pixon 12. The Samsung Pixon 12 is also a truly beautiful mobile phone, and there's no doubt it produces much better photos than any other phone out there. And then, of course, there's that huge touchscreen, and that slick interface, making for one incredibly sexy and lovable mobile phone. At the end of the day, it's going to come down to what you want from the phone, but if you want the best camera, the only choice is the Samsung Pixon 12.

Samsung - World Domination Through Superior Mobile Phones

Author: Matt Sharp

Samsung are a force to be reckoned with, and they have phones that threaten to take over the feature phone AND smartphone worlds. Let's check out three of the best.

Samsung Tocco Ultra

What if you want a phone that has both a touchscreen AND a keypad? Then say hello to the Samsung Tocco Ultra, which combines the touchscreen goodness of the original Tocco, with the sleek looks of the Ultra Edition series, to make a phone that's shockingly thin, considering it includes both a huge touchscreen, and a full alphanumeric keypad. The Samsung Tocco Ultra also inherits the TouchWiz interface from its predecessor, and that makes for an incredible user experience. The features also include an 8 megapixel camera.

Samsung i8910 HD

As nice as the Samsung Tocco Ultra is, however, it's overshadowed by its 'big brother', the Samsung i8910 HD. There's a very good reason for that. Whilst it, like the Samsung Tocco Ultra has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Never before has a phone been able to capture video at that massive high resolution, and coincidentally (or is it coincidence? Maybe not...), the Samsung i8910 HD captures high-def video at the exact quality that Youtube display high-def videos at. It's very possible that the Samsung i8910 HD was designed with its main feature being the ability to get yourself on Youtube, in high-definition. And while the Samsung I7500 has the sleek Android interface, the Samsung i8910 HD combines its TouchWiz interface with Symbian, giving it true sleekness, as well as power. Now add the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung i8910 HD not only shows the difference between feature phones and smartphones, but also, is one of the best phones ever made!

Looks, Power, Innovation - smartphone OSes for the next generation

Author: Matt Sharp

There are several contenders for the title of best smartphone OS, each offering different benefits. Let's take a look at three (Symbian, Windows and Android), and the phones that best show them off.

Nokia 5530

The first phone up is a totally new entrant into Nokia's Xpress range of music mobile phones, the stunning Nokia 5530. This one's quite obviously designed for music and video. Then, of course, the Nokia 5530 has a glorious touchscreen, to let you play with those different media files. Basically, the Nokia 5530 was designed to be a teeny portable jukebox and movie player, and as music phones go, this is just about the sweetest. The Nokia 5530 has also got a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA data access and sat-nav, making it a wonderful all-rounder, as well as a superb media gadget.

Samsung I7500

So, we have the Nokia 5530, which takes Symbian and builds into a superb music phone. And then there's the HTC Touch Pro2, which stands out as one of the best Windows Mobile phones of this or any generation. But now it's time for some real innovation.

Android, Symbian and Speed - The Best Samsung Touchscreen Phones Ever Made?

Author: Matt Sharp

Samsung are riding on an all-time high, with phones for everyone, from high-end smartphones, through to ultra-cool feature phone. Let's take a look at three of the best.

Samsung i8910 HD

Next, there's the Samsung i8910 HD, and it has one big advantage over the other two. Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Combine that with the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung i8910 HD deserves to be one of the phones of the year!

Samsung Jet

So, in the smartphone arena, you've got the Samsung I7500, which gives you the sheer power of Android, and the Samsung i8910 HD, which combines Symbian with full HD video recording. However, in the feature phone world, there's the Samsung Jet, a touchscreen phone with a superb new interface, and a super-fast 800MHz processor. Whilst it shares many design similarities with TouchWiz, the new Cubic UI in the Samsung Jet is a whole new experience, where you can flip between screens by dragging your finger, and rotating the cube round. The UI is brilliant, but in terms of feature, the Samsung Jet is no slouch, either. You get a 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA, and a superb web browser, and although the Samsung Jet isn't a smartphone (nor meant to be one), it's one of the nicest feature phones out there.

The Newest And Most Exciting Smartphones On The Market - Which Has The Best OS?

Author: Matt Sharp

It's the old, old story, that's played out across PCs and mobile phones: operating system versus operating system. Let's take a look at three of the best mobile OSes currently on the market.

HTC Touch Diamond2

The HTC Touch Diamond2 actually does a very good job of making it so you don't have to go into standard Windows menus that often, as on top of the operating system, the interface is HTC's patented TouchFLO 3D setup, where everything is achieved through various finger swipes and sweeping gestures. It is truly intuitive, and it's the reason why the HTC Touch Diamond2 is such an unmitigated joy to use. Of course, it's not all about being pretty, a phone needs to have decent features and the HTC Touch Diamond2 has them in spades, from the 5 megapixel camera, through GPS, to incredibly fast HSDPA internet access (not to mention the superb Opera Mobile web browser). To many, the HTC Touch Diamond2 is the ultimate Windows Mobile phone.

Palm Pre

So, there's the HTC Touch Diamond2, which relies on Windows Mobile and a beautiful interface on top. And then, there's the Samsung I7500, which wows you with its Symbian OS and its HD video recording. But for ease of use and sleekness, nothing can touch the Palm Pre. With its WebOS operating system, the Palm Pre is easily the most intuitive phone on the market. Not only that, but the integration between apps on the Palm Pre is like nothing ever seen before, making it feel like the phone is, at times, doing your thinking for you. There's never been a phone like the Palm Pre, and for that reason, it must surely be the phone of the year, so far.

The three best Android-powered phones on the market

Author: Matt Sharp

Android is on a march to take over the world, and right now, there are three gorgeous, keyboard-less Android phones available on the market. Let's take a look at them.

HTC Magic

Google Android is one of the big buzzwords of the year, and the next phone on the list, the HTC Magic, is winning an army of fans round the world. One of the main reasons for that is the interface, with finger friendly controls, and sweeping animations as you move between screens. On the front end, though, what makes the HTC Magic particularly special is that it uses widgets. With these, you can customise the HTC Magic in any way you feel like. Instead of just changing the wallpaper, it'll also let you pick the icons on screen, and position them anywhere YOU want. The HTC Magic takes customisation to the next level, and is easily one of the nicer interfaces in the mobile industry.

HTC Hero

So, there's the Samsung I7500, which puts Android into the sexiest body it has been seen in. And then, there's the HTC Magic, which stands as HTC's first keyboard-less Android phone. However, there's an alternative to those two. Based on the interface alone, I have to conclude that the HTC Hero is the nicest phone on this list.

Speed - the new buying criteria for mobile phones

Author: Matt Sharp

Speed. It's a short but important word, because in 2009, mobile phones are getting faster. Let's take a look at the three of the fastest phones on the market.

iPhone 3GS

The first thing that will strike you about the iPhone 3GS is how fast and responsive it is. After all, the 'S' in the name iPhone 3GS does actually stand for 'Speed'. It's up to twice as fast as its predecessor was, and that increase in speed isn't the only new thing. You now get a 3 megapixel camera, a choice of 16 or 32Gb of storage space, and full voice control throughout the whole of the phone. Plus, of course, you get the cool factor that only comes from owning an iPhone 3GS.

Toshiba TG01

So, there's the iPhone 3GS, which is the fastest iPhone ever made, but is, in a very definite way, not the fastest phone ever, because the Samsung Jet, with an 800MHz processor, is even faster. But finally, there's the fastest, the Toshiba TG01, which also has an unbelievable 4.1 inch screen. That huge screen and the ludicrously fast 1GHz 'Snapdragon' processor give Windows a whole new lease of life, removing any of the 'clunkiness' Windows phones of long ago may have had. In the case of the Toshiba TG01, Windows Mobile is allied to a brand new, 3D interface, with a series of 3 revolving strips that contain all your apps and shortcuts. The animations and actions of the interface are smooth and beautiful, and the Toshiba TG01 proves that as far as operating systems go, Windows Mobile is still one of the hottest properties in the world.

Modern touchscreen phones - the showdown between Symbian, Windows and Android

Author: Matt Sharp

Touchscreen phones are rocking the world. Let's take a look at three of the coolest currently on the market.

HTC Hero

So, there's the Toshiba TG01, which relies on raw power to make Windows Mobile truly awesome. And then, there's the Nokia 5530, which wows you with its Symbian OS and its music playback. Based purely on that logic, the HTC Hero ably demonstrates just why Android is such a threat to the incumbent operating systems.

Windows Mobile/Android/WebOS - which has the best mobile phone interface?

Author: Matt Sharp

The mobile landscape is changing, as manufacturers wake up to the fact that users want their phones to have a simple, sleek interface. Let's take a look at three of the best mobile phone interfaces, currently (or soon to be) on the market.

HTC Hero

The first important fact about the HTC Hero, and the bit that has made it so talked about, is its operating system: Google Android. As it's only the second phone to officially go on sale using Android, the HTC Hero has garnered an awful lot of trade and consumer interest. Even more importantly, the HTC Hero is the first Android phone to feature a keyboard-less, touchscreen-only design, a thing that seems to be all the rage in 2009. It's certainly more of a looker than its predecessors, the G1 and the Magic (thanks to the beautiful new Sense interface), and that fusion of enhanced looks and the still-awesome power of Android makes the HTC Hero a very compelling phone indeed. If innovation is your thing, this is the phone for you.

Palm Pre

So, there's the HTC Touch Diamond2, with TouchFLO 3D, sitting atop Windows Mobile. And then, there's the HTC Hero, which gives Android a new interface.

Modern touchscreen phones - Apple vs Palm vs HTC

Author: Matt Sharp

As the mobile world has evolved, new players have started to take market share from the established players. Let's take a look at three of the best up and coming manufacturers.

iPhone 3GS

The first thing that will strike you about the iPhone 3GS is how fast and responsive it is. After all, the 'S' in the name iPhone 3GS does actually stand for 'Speed'. It's up to twice as fast as its predecessor was, and that increase in speed isn't the only new thing. You also get the Android Marketplace, which lets you download and install third party apps to your HTC Hero, and it ends up creating a smartphone that really can morph into whatever you want it to be. It really is a kind of Hero; it's the HTC Hero.

Palm Pre

So, the iPhone 3GS offers that perceptible cool factor, and the HTC Hero offers a game-changing open source software solution. And since Palm have been around for years, one must ask: what does the Palm Pre offer that's different? Well, one could talk about the WebOS interface it uses, as it's unique in the annals of phone history. And indeed, there's one feature of WebOS, directly related to the keyboard, that makes the Palm Pre so cool. Universal search. Keyboard-less phones - are they the future?

Author: Matt Sharp

Many modern mobile phones are trying to be as sleek as possible by removing the thing that used to be all important to a phone's design: the keypad. Let's take a look at three of the coolest on the market.

Toshiba TG01

First up, there's a phone that really gives Windows Mobile the grunt it needs to run properly: the Toshiba TG01. In terms of outstanding new technologies, what the Toshiba TG01 brings to the party isn't the 4.1 inch display (although that's noteworthy in itself), but what's inside it. The Toshiba TG01 uses a next-gen, dual-core Snapdragon processor, which runs at 1GHz, and that means the Toshiba TG01 is the most powerful phone in existence... which is good, because in terms of other features, a lot of other phones leave the Toshiba TG01 in the dust.

Nokia 5530

First on the roster is a whole new member of Nokia's Xpress range of music mobile phones, the mouth-watering Nokia 5530. This phone is pretty obviously designed for music and video; you can tell by the dedicated XpressMedia touch-key that pops up a list of links to music, videos, the web, and more. Oh, and the Nokia 5530 has a beautiful, touch-sensitive display, to actually play with all your media content. Essentially, the Nokia 5530 was designed as a teeny portable entertainment centre, and as music devices go, this is easily one of the prettiest. The Nokia 5530 has also got a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA data access and GPS, so that it's a superb all-round mobile phone, as well as a superb media box.

HTC Hero

So, there's the Toshiba TG01, which relies on raw power to make Windows Mobile truly awesome. And then, there's the Nokia 5530, which wows you with its Symbian OS and its music playback. However, there's an open source alternative to those two. Android is trying to take over the world, and its new home is the beautiful HTC Hero. Based purely on that logic, the HTC Hero ably demonstrates just why Android is such a threat to the incumbent operating systems.

An iPhone-like Challenge - the Palm Pre

Author: Simon Drew

The iPhone has a serious contender in the Palm Pre. Not that mobile phone maker Palm Inc. wants to, but the Palm Pre has the look and feel on its user interface that’s undoubtedly inspired by the iPhone.

It uses a Linux-based WebOS platform that’s unique to Palm but with a home screen that looks like a page from iPhone. It even has a menu icons that take the same elegant approach of showing just what you need which is what iPhone does.

The obvious conclusion points to an effort to take some iPhone market for its own. With a few downsides on the Palm Pre, we think that iPhone now faces a real challenge from it.

Remarkable Features for an Award Winning Mobile Phone

Winning considerable awards and plaudits from critics make the Palm Pre a great option to consider when getting a versatile all-in-one mobile phone. Check out these winning features:

  • It runs on a 600 MHz Texas Instruments OMAP 3430 (ARM Cortex A8 + PowerVR SGX) CPU engine that’s safely underclocked to 500 MHz.
  • Its sports a large and brilliant 3.1-inch capacitive touchscreen that supports 16 million colors and an HVGA (half-size VGA) resolution. It receives input stimulus just like the iPhone touchscreen with need for a stylus pen that Palm handsets have been known for. There’s gesture area below the display with LED underlighting for additional commands using your finger.
  • It does not switch to a virtual keyboard on the screen like most other touchscreens when keying in data for email and text messaging. That’s what its sliding QWERTY keyboard is for.
  • The handset works nicely with three input sensors: an accelerometer that automatically shifts from landscape to portrait and back at the tilt of handset; an ambient light sensor for automatically adjusting the display’s brightness; and a proximity sensor that disables touchscreen input when the handset touches your face in a call.
  • It’s got a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash that does an excellent imaging job with very minimal features.
  • There’s a generous 8 GB of internal memory.
  • It’s among the first smartphones that can be charged wirelessly using electromagnetic induction from a charging block Palm calls the Touchstone Charger. But there’s the usual microUSB port as well for wired charging.
  • There’s Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR with A2DP support as well as 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • You also get turn-by-turn navigation with A-GPS support.

Forgivable Drawbacks

Admittedly, the Palm Pre has a couple of drawbacks. It doesn’t have any microSD expansion slot which we think must have been forgotten by its designers. Either that or it was banking on its generous internal memory of 8 Gb. It’s got no video recording capability. For an excellent imaging mobile phone, this may disappoint. But studies show that few users actually use this feature especially on a handset with minimal user memory, whether internal or external.

But no matter, these are minor letdowns that are overwhelmed by its other features that make the Palm Pre a truly enjoyable mobile phone experience to own. Its awards should speak nicely about that. Telefonica announced its availability in the UK before the Holiday winter sets in. Go get one before Christmas.

The IntelligentAuto mode relieves the user from worrying about the settings necessary. Face detection helps in recognizing faces and thus focus on them during any capture. At a time, around six faces can be identified. IntelligentExposure mode automatically checks for the ambience in the room or outdoors, and adjusts the settings according to it all by itself. This camera comes with a built-in flash which is the biggest advantage as compared to other cameras. The sensors used in the camera combine the goodness of CCD sensors as well as CMOS sensors in the fact that it takes some really good images and consumes very little power.

The data in four channels can be read at the same time. Panasonic Lumix GF1 delivers about 60 fps fulltime live view pictures. These pictures are displayed with high quality and good gradation. The images captured are of superior 12.1 Megapixel resolution with a live MOS sensor.

Panasonic Lumix G Series has "Dust Reduction System" to help you getting more sharp picture even in a dusty environment. No longer should one worry about the dust that enters the camera when the lens is being changed. All that you capture using this camera can be visualized in your Panasonic VIERA HDTV. All you need to do is to simply place the memory card into the slot maintained for it.

Upgrade your HTC Windows Mobile phone to Windows Mobile 6.5!

Author: Matt Sharp

HTC have announced that they plan on letting users of the three most recent WinMo phones upgrade to version 6.5 when it comes out. Let's check out the three phones the upgrade will be available for.

To many, the HTC Touch Diamond2 is the ultimate Windows Mobile phone and it's only set to get better when it becomes upgradable to Windows Mobile 6.5.

HTC Snap

So, both the HTC Touch Diamond2 and the QWERTY-enabled HTC Touch Pro2 will be upgradable to Windows Mobile 6.5 when it gets released. But HTC aren't stopping there; they're also letting non-touchscreen users upgrade, if they have the email-centric HTC Snap. Anyone who's used Windows Mobile before will know it's exceptionally good at emails and info management, and the HTC Snap is no exception to that rule. You get the same excellent POP3 and Exchange Server (for your corporate emails) support, but the HTC Snap also includes something new: Inner Circle. This is a new feature for the HTC Snap, that lets you set an Inner Circle of friends or important people, and automatically prioritises emails from them, to make sure you get the emails that matter the most, first.

Phone Interfaces - it's not just about features any more!

Author: Matt Sharp

Modern smartphones can't just rely on features to wow their users; they need a good interface too. Let's check out three of the best available: Symbian, Android and WebOS.

Samsung i8910 HD

First up, there's the Samsung i8910 HD, and it has one big advantage over the TG01. Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Combine that with the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung i8910 HD is the one to go for if you want the best camera phone.

HTC Hero

Android is trying to take over the world, and its new home is the beautiful HTC Hero. It has all the good stuff that made the first Android phone (the G1) good, but puts it all in a touchscreen-only body, which is both sleek and sexy. Since the keyboard has been removed, the HTC Hero also has a full, onscreen keyboard, and a sumptuous new interface called Sense. You also get the Android Marketplace, which lets you download and install third party apps to your HTC Hero, and it ends up creating a smartphone that really can morph into whatever you want it to be. It really is a true Hero; it's the HTC Hero.

Palm Pre

So, there's the HTC Hero, which relies on Google Android to give you an exceptional experience. And then, there's the Samsung i8910 HD, which wows you with its Symbian OS and its HD video recording.

HTC vs Toshiba - who makes the best Windows Mobile phones?

Author: Matt Sharp

Windows Mobile is one of the premier smartphone operating systems in the world today, but which phone shows it off to the full? Let's find out.

HTC Snap - the email device

Anyone who's used Windows Mobile before will know it's exceptionally good at emails and info management, and the HTC Snap is no exception to that rule. You get the same excellent POP3 and Exchange Server (for your corporate emails) support, but the HTC Snap also includes something new: Inner Circle. This is a new feature for the HTC Snap, that lets you set an Inner Circle of friends or important people, and automatically prioritises emails from them, to make sure you get the emails that matter the most, first.

Toshiba TG01

On the one hand, there's the HTC Touch Diamond2 on one hand, and on the other, with a full QWERTY keyboard and exceptional email, there's the HTC Snap. But what about raw power. Windows Mobile needs a lot of power to run at its best. The OS has taken a lot of stick form people in the past, most notably from Apple fans, but the new Toshiba TG01 brings it up to a level that can actually compete with something like the iPhone 3GS. You see, the Toshiba TG01 has the two things WinMo needs to make it run really well: a powerful processor (coming in at 1GHz) and a massive screen (coming in at an unbelievable 4.1 inches). Combine that with a custom front end, as well as a 3 megapixel camera, and a custom user interface, and the Toshiba TG01 is easily the most well-featured Windows Mobile phone ever made.

Author: Raina Kelsey

The two devices launched by the same manufacturer are likely to set a benchmark in the industry with their two masterpieces. When it comes to Blackberry 9500 Storm versus Blackberry 8520 Curve, both stand apart from each other.

On one hand when, the Blackberry 9500 Storm is performing pretty well with its 3.2 Inch 65k color Touch Screen, Blackberry 8520 Curve is performing decently as well with its 2.64 inch screen and 65K colors. The 2 mega pixel camera of the later model is pretty less compared to 3.5 mega pixel camera of the other model. The Curve provides the facility of 5 x digital zoom but its counterpart does not provide any such feature. When the camera key is found in 9500, it seems to be found missing from 8520. The facility of video streaming is also possible in the Storm besides the features like video player and video recording which are available in 8520. The facility of auto focus is missing from Curve.

When Blackberry 8520 Curve comes with a trackball, the Blackberry 9500 Storm comes with a touch screen. Besides text messaging, multimedia messaging, wireless email with attachments and instant messaging available, 9500 excels over the other as it comes integrated with the features like email with attachments and email integrated accounts. The interesting feature of Storm is that it is Facebook & MySpace compatible. As far as sound attribute of Blackberry 9500 Storm versus Blackberry 8520 Curve is concerned, former scores better as it comes integrated with the innovative features like Roxio media manager, microphone, mono & stereo headset. It is also blessed with RIM wireless modem.

The storage capacity of both the devices is large as 8520 comes with 256 megabytes flash memory plus MicroSD memory and 9500 is coming with 128 megabytes flash memory & 1 gigabytes memory plus MicroSD. The 5.5 hours talk time and 360 hours standby is what users can easily expect from 9500 model. The expectations in terms of talktime on fully charged battery has not dissatisfied the users of 8520 as well because it comes with 4.5 hours talk time and 408 hours standby. The Curve seems to be slightly light weight and sleek compared to the simensions of the other gizmo. As far as similarities are concerned of both the gadgets are concerned, games can be downloaded in both the gadgets. In addition to the similarities like phone book, organizer, calendar in both the gadgets, the 9500 Storm comes with more interesting features like touch screen QWERTY keyboard, touch screen font size selectable, auto rotate touch screen, sure type, multi tap etc. .Both the devices are likely to give a feeling of a royal gadget. Although designed by a single manufacturer, yet there are substantial differences between the two.
