Scientists at the University of California are developing a way for the public to contribute data to research projects using a ubiquitous sensing device - the smart phone.

Korea - home of the world's best mobile phones?

Author: Matt Sharp

Korea is producing some of the sexiest, most incredible mobile phones in existence. Let's check out the three best examples of Korean engineering brilliance.

Samsung Jet

Coming soon from the Korean manufacturer is the new Samsung Jet, a touchscreen phone with a brand new interface, based on a 3D cube. Whilst it shares many design similarities with TouchWiz, the new Cubic UI in the Samsung Jet is a whole new experience, where you can flip between screens by dragging your finger, and rotating the cube round. The UI is brilliant, but in terms of feature, the Samsung Jet is no slouch, either. You get a 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA, and a superb web browser, and although the Samsung Jet isn't a smartphone (nor meant to be one), it's one of the nicest feature phones out there.

LG Viewty Smart

The first Viewty was one of the most successful phones LG have ever made, and now, the true successor to the name has arrived in the shape of the LG Viewty Smart. Featuring the new touch-based S-Class UI, the LG Viewty Smart is an incredible phone to use, with slick animations and smooth transitions between screens and menus. As well as the 8MP camera in the LG Viewty Smart, you also get a stunning multimedia player, and super-fast internet access, making the LG Viewty Smart one of the coolest camera phones out there.

Samsung i8910 HD

The Samsung Jet easily has the speed advantage, and the Samsung Tocco Ultra clearly has the edge in terms of the camera. However, if video is more your thing, another phone trumps the two on this list, as it's also a fully fledged smartphone: the Samsung i8910 HD. The HD on the end of the name isn't just there for show, it signifies that the Samsung i8910 HD is the first phone in history that can record 720p HD-Video. Conveniently, that's the same definition Youtube shows its high-def videos at, so is it possible that the Samsung i8910 HD is actually the perfect HD Youtube phone?

First images of Microsoft Office 2010 and Office Web Apps

Author: Joshep John

Microsoft will offer free access to individuals from Windows Live Web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Even if Microsoft considers simplistic position face-to-face and its Google Apps online productivity applications, they nevertheless have similarities. The web editions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Office OneNote 2010, eased compared to thick client versions, will be free for individuals and users will need only a Windows Live to access. As for access, it can be done from either a computer or smartphone (Windows Mobile and iPhone / iPod Touch) through a Web browser: optional, Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari. Microsoft seems to have privileged the first three browsers in terms of market share. As regards a future compatibility with Google Chrome, the publisher prefers to avoid.

As for the thick client versions of Office 2010, Microsoft ensures that the Office Web Applications will support the standards OpenXML and ODF 1.1, the format submitted by the publisher. Support of standards that may raise criticism as is the case for Office 2007 SP2. The Open Document Format Alliance has particularly noted the presence of bugs limiting interoperability between applications integrating support for ODF. A beta version of Office 2010 Web should be available in August. The official launch is scheduled for its first half 2010. For storage of office files, users have free space to 25 GB of Microsoft SkyDrive service.

Indeed, Office 2010 license will open the possibility of having no additional charge, access to applications from the desktop, web browser or on mobile. But companies can also choose instead to purchase Office 2010 licenses, to subscribe to a hosted offering. The Office Web Apps will be available on the microsoft support Online Services launched in March. The ribbon interface introduced in Office 2007 is now widespread (even integrates SharePoint). Beyond this ergonomic issue, the editor insists on adding collaborative features. Another new feature is a contextual spell checker to identify errors more easily. Main features of Excel 2010 made the honor by Microsoft, the "sparklines", the ability for users to convert data in trend curves displayed in a cell. As for PowerPoint 2010, it now includes video support including video codecs H.264 and MPEG 4. Videos can be treated as an image in the application.

To simplify the use of Outlook, including research, Microsoft has added the compression of messages. Thus, all messages related to the same subject are grouped together. Gmail users already know this functionality. Microsoft has also added system tray quick, customizable, thanks to a menu allowing you to easily create new buttons for action.

Feature phones - are they slowly turning into smartphones?

Author: Matt Sharp

Feature phones have come a long way, so much so, that they now rival smartphones in terms of power. Let's check out three of the best.

Samsung Tocco Ultra

What would happen if you took an awesome camera, and a sumptuous interface, but gave it a slide-out keyboard, and unbelievably, made it thinner than its predecessors? You'd get the gorgeous Samsung Tocco Ultra, one of the prettiest phones Samsung have ever made. It really is quite astounding that, despite being thinner than the Pixon, the Samsung Tocco Ultra manages to squeeze in that beautiful keyboard. If amazing looks (with superb features) are what you seek from a phone, then the Samsung Tocco Ultra is perfect for you.

LG Viewty Smart

The Samsung Jet easily has the speed advantage, and the Samsung Tocco Ultra clearly has a head start in terms of looks. But there is a competitor that can take them both down. The Viewty is one of LG's most successful phones ever, and now, here's its successor, the LG Viewty Smart. Before we go any further, let's clear something up: despite its name, the LG Viewty Smart, isn't a smartphone. It's a feature phone, but what a feature phone the LG Viewty Smart is! The camera is superb, and the S-Class user interface is second-to-none, making it a truly beautiful phone to use, as well as having one of the best camera's in the business.

Mobile interfaces - what is the best they have to offer?

Author: Matt Sharp

Let's check out three phones which show off the best the world of mobile phone interfaces has to offer.

LG Viewty Smart

There's a phone out there that fits the phrase 'phone that's nearly a smartphone, without actually being a smartphone': the aptly named LG Viewty Smart. Following on from the original Viewty, the LG Viewty Smart follows the same design ethos of having a touchscreen only interface (the awesome S-Class interface), squeezed into a slim body, but it ups the ante with a superb 8MP camera. It also has HSDPA, making it a truly portable internet device. Put simply, the LG Viewty Smart is the smartest non-smartphone in the world, and it's largely down to the interface. Built around a 3D cube, S-Class gives the LG Viewty a user-friendly and sleek interface, it is designed to be simple and intuitive.

Samsung i8910 HD

Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD's real party piece is that it is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Never before has a phone been able to capture video at that massive high resolution, and coincidentally (or is it coincidence? Maybe not...), the Samsung i8910 HD captures high-def video at the exact quality that Youtube display high-def videos at. It's very possible that the Samsung i8910 HD was designed with its main feature being the ability to get yourself on Youtube, in high-definition. Combine that with the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung i8910 HD is the one to go for if you want the best camera phone.

Palm Pre

So, there's the LG Viewty Smart, with its S-Class UI. And then, there's the Samsung i8910 HD, which wows you with its Symbian OS and its HD video recording. But for ease of use and sleekness, nothing can touch the Palm Pre. With its WebOS operating system, the Palm Pre is easily the most intuitive phone on the market. Not only that, but the integration between apps on the Palm Pre is like nothing ever seen before, making it feel like the phone is, at times, doing your thinking for you. There's never been a phone like the Palm Pre, and for that reason, it must surely be the phone of the year, so far.

Eight megapixel phones - the new mid-range for camera phones?

Author: Matt Sharp

Eight megapixel phones have become much more common, but which one is best? Let's take a look at three that show off their cameras to the full.

Samsung Tocco Ultra

But what if you want a phone that has both a touchscreen AND a keypad? Then say hello to the Samsung Tocco Ultra, which combines the touchscreen goodness of the original Tocco, with the sleek looks of the Ultra Edition series, to make a phone that's shockingly thin, considering it includes both a huge touchscreen, and a full alphanumeric keypad. The Samsung Tocco Ultra also inherits the TouchWiz interface from its predecessor, and that makes for an incredible user experience. The features are better than the Arena, too, because as you might have guessed, it also has an 8 megapixel camera.

Samsung i8910 HD

The LG Viewty Smart is undoubtedly going to be a superb touch phone for those on more of a budget, and the Samsung Tocco Ultra takes the crown for being the most fashion-conscious. The Samsung i8910 HD, though, has one big advantage over the other two. Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Combine that with the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung i8910 HD, just like the other two on this list, deserves its place as one of the phones of the year!

The Toshiba TG01 is now on sale - can anything take it down?

Author: Matt Sharp

The Toshiba TG01 is finally on sale in the UK; let's take at this Windows Mobile superphone, and see what threats it faces in the mobile world.

Toshiba TG01

Windows Mobile has taken a lot of stick form people in the past, most notably from Apple fans, but the new Toshiba TG01 brings it up to a level that can actually compete with the iPhone 3GS. You see, the Toshiba TG01 has the two things WinMo needs to make it run really well: a powerful processor (coming in at 1GHz) and a massive screen (coming in at an unbelievable 4.1 inches). Combine that with a custom front end, as well as a 3 megapixel camera, and a custom user interface, and the Toshiba TG01 is easily the most well-featured Windows Mobile phone ever made.

Samsung i8910 HD

One major threat to the Toshiba TG01 is the Symbian-powered Samsung i8910 HD. The Samsung i8910 HD is also a touchscreen-only beast, albeit with a smaller screen, but it is still a magnificent phone. There's a one very crucial reason for that: it's not only got a superb 8MP camera, but it will also record video at full 720p HD resolution. That fact alone is enough to make the Samsung i8910 HD one of the hottest phones of the year, but when you fact in its sheer beauty, and one of the best screens (using AMOLED technology) ever seen on a phone, it only serves to make the Samsung i8910 HD an even more appealing prospect.

Palm Pre - the sleek one

So, representing Symbian, you have the Samsung i8910 HD, with its astonishing video capture. Flying the flag for Windows Mobile, there's the Toshiba TG01, with astounding power and an immense screen. But we're discussing interfaces here, and one phone beats both of these powerhouses hands down: the groundbreaking Palm Pre. You see, the Palm Pre is built on an entirely custom interface called WebOS, that is easily the slickest, most intuitive interface that's ever been released. With intuitive gesture controls and finger sweeps for EVERY action on the phone, the Palm Pre also brings in tight integration between its apps. Book a cinema ticket on one app, and the Palm Pre automatically updates your calendar with the time. Multitask many different apps, and watch the Palm Pre run without any effort or lag. In the world of interfaces, essentially, the Palm Pre just cannot be beaten, whilst in terms of video, the Samsung i8910 HD wins. But in terms of raw power, the Toshiba TG01 easily takes the crown.

The quest for the best 8MP phone in the UK

Author: Matt Sharp

Eight megapixel phones are becoming more commonplace every day. But which is the best? Let's check out three from different manufacturers, which aim to be the best there is.

Sony Ericsson W995

If there's one name that really stands out in the world of music phones, it's 'Walkman'. What happens, though, if you take a Walkman phone, and give it an 8MP camera that's straight out of a Cyber-Shot phone? You get the utterly brilliant Sony Ericsson W995!

The combination of Walkman and Cyber-Shot is what makes the Sony Ericsson W995 so very compelling. Top-end imaging is just a button-press away, and the Sony Ericsson W995 always makes music sound better than anything you can imagine. It doesn't have a smartphone OS, but with a phone as good as the Sony Ericsson W995, it just won't matter.

Samsung Tocco Ultra

So, there's the Sony Ericsson W995, which takes the Walkman range to new heights. And then, there's the LG Viewty Smart, with its beautiful touchscreen interface. But what happens if you want a phone that has both a touchscreen AND a keypad? Then for you, there's the Samsung Tocco Ultra, that combines the touchscreen goodness of the Tocco, with the sleek looks of the Ultra Edition series, to make a phone that's shockingly thin, considering it includes both a huge touchscreen, and a full alphanumeric keypad. The Samsung Tocco Ultra also inherits the TouchWiz interface from its predecessor, and that makes for an incredible user experience.

Mobile phone interfaces - which is the best and easiest to use?

Author: Matt Sharp

Interfaces are very important to mobile phones, and it's not just smartphones that get sleek, touchscreen operating systems. Let's see how three of the best interfaces stand up against each other.

Built around a 3D cube, S-Class gives the LG Viewty a user-friendly and sleek interface, it is designed to be simple and intuitive.

Samsung i8910 HD

However, now we move to a true smartphone: the Samsung i8910 HD. Time will tell, but one thing is certain; the Samsung i8910 HD is the best phone to get if you want the best camera. In terms of the interface, the Samsung i8910 HD uses a new variant of TouchWiz

Palm Pre

So, representing Symbian, you have the Samsung i8910 HD, with its double-hit combo of astounding camera and music. Flying the flag for non-smartphones, there's the LG Viewty Smart. But we're discussing interfaces here, and one phone beats both of these powerhouses hands down: the groundbreaking Palm Pre. Smartphones - which OS offers the best phone?

Author: Matt Sharp

It's Symbian, versus Google Android, versus Windows Mobile in a three-way battle for the hearts and minds of smartphone users. Let's see which is best.

Samsung i8910 HD

First up, we have the Samsung i8910 HD, and it has one big advantage over the other two. Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Combine that with the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung i8910 HD deserves to be one of the phones of the year!

HTC Magic

Google Android is one of the big buzzwords of the year, and the newest phone to use it, the HTC Magic, is winning an army of fans round the world. One of the main reasons for that is the interface, with finger friendly controls, and sweeping animations as you move between screens. On the front end, though, what makes the HTC Magic particularly special is that it uses widgets. With these, you can customise the HTC Magic in any way you feel like. Instead of just changing the wallpaper, it'll also let you pick the icons on screen, and position them anywhere YOU want. The HTC Magic takes customisation to the next level, and is easily one of the nicer interfaces in the mobile industry.

Toshiba TG01

So, on the Symbian front, you have the Samsung i8910 HD, sporting its superb camera. As for Android, there's the innovative HTC Magic. But Windows Mobile goes down a different route. You see, Windows Mobile needs two things to run at its best: a powerful processor and a big display. Well, say hello to the Toshiba TG01, the phone with the fastest processor AND the biggest display in the history of phones! Weighing in at 1GHz and 4.1 inches respectively, those specs mean that the Toshiba TG01 will run Windows Mobile more smoothly than any other phone in existence; as well as that with that immense screen, the Toshiba TG01 makes drilling down into menus, and actually getting into the internals of Windows, so much easier. If power is your thing (and lets be honest, who doesn't want a powerful phone?), then the Toshiba TG01 is the phone for you!

The three best phones of 2009?

Author: Matt Sharp

Smartphones are getting more powerful every day. Let's check out the 3 most powerful phones of 2009.

Toshiba TG01

There's little doubt that Windows Mobile is one of the big operating systems in the world. However, to get the best out of it, you really need a phone with a fast processor, a big screen, and a custom user interface on top, not unlike the Sony Ericsson X1 or HTC's range of handset. Well now, there's a new kid in town, called the Toshiba TG01, and it fulfils all three of those criteria. Not only that, but as well as the custom interface, it has the biggest screen of any mobile phone, and the fastest processor, coming in at 4.1 inches, and 1GHz, respectively.

The Toshiba TG01 is quite simply the most powerful Windows Mobile phone out there...

Samsung i8910 HD

Next up is Symbian, found in the Samsung i8910 HD. It takes the crown of most powerful on this list for two reasons. First, the Samsung i8910 HD is built on Symbian, so whilst the interface will be familiar (the top shell is TouchWiz again), the phone gets a massive power boost over its siblings, giving it real smartphone credentials. The other factor that makes the Samsung i8910 HD so spectacular is video. Not only does it take still images at 8 megapixels, but the Samsung i8910 HD will also record video in true, 720p resolution, high-definition video. No other phone in the world can do that yet, so the Samsung i8910 HD has to be one of the most exciting phones ever, not just in 2009.

Palm Pre

So, there's the Toshiba TG01, which relies on masses of raw power to give you an exceptional experience.

Symbian vs Windows Mobile - which is the best?

Author: Matt Sharp

Let's check out how the big, well-established operating systems stand up against each other. The battle lines are drawn; Symbian and Windows Mobile are going to war.

Samsung i8910 HD - the first phone to record true HD video

From Samsung comes a first in the world of mobile phones, with the Samsung i8910 HD. It's not the first 8MP phone to have a touchscreen, or to use the TouchWiz UI, but it is the only phone in the entire world that will record true HD video at 720p resolution. So, in essence, the Samsung i8910 HD doesn't just give you an incredible stills camera, it also becomes a proper, HD camcorder. A lot of people have also speculated that it's no coincidence that 720p is also the format Youtube uses for its HD videos. Could the Samsung i8910 HD be the first HD Youtube phone? It's not being marketed as that (so far), but it's a compelling thought, nonetheless. Imagine grabbing a video in pin-sharp HD, then directly uploading it to Youtube, at speeds comparable to home broadband. The Samsung i8910 HD can do that!

Nokia N97 - touch and type

With the Nokia 5800 all set to deliver touch-based mobile phones to the mid-range market, that opens up a massive gap at the very top-end of the product range; well, there IS a touchscreen mobile phone on its way to fill that gap: the utterly awesome Nokia N97. This takes the same Symbian S60 Touch operating system and packages it inside the body of a proper, full-on smartphone. So it has a massive, 3.5 inch screen, a kick out QWERTY keyboard, and the camera's been upgraded to 5 megapixels.

The Nokia N97 is, as should be glaringly obvious, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it really is as powerful as the rumours had us believe, with HSDPA, sat-nav, digital compass, and integrated Flash, meaning you have an internet experience that tops any other mobile phones! Put simply the Nokia N97 is simply incredible.

Toshiba TG01

So, on the Symbian front, you have the Nokia N97, sporting its superb keyboard and massive internal memory. And as a double header for Symbian, there's the video-centric Samsung i8910 HD.

8MP phones - which is the best money can buy?

Author: Matt Sharp

Eight megapixel phones give you the best compromise between high-end imaging, and a lower price than the top-end 12MP phones. Let's check out the three best 8MPO phones on the market.

Samsung Tocco Ultra - trading on its looks?

Touch interfaces are all the rage this year, and the Samsung Tocco Ultra has one of the nicest. Based on their TouchWiz UI (which has previously seen the light of day in phones like the original Tocco), the Samsung Tocco Ultra puts that interface into a body that's clearly been inspired by their Ultra Edition series of slim, sexy phones. Even the name Samsung Tocco Ultra hints at that dual heritage, with the phone being designed to look good both inside and out.
However, good looks aren't the only thing the Samsung Tocco Ultra is trading on some cool features, too. Quite apart form the sleek, finger-friendly interface, it's also equipped with a beautiful 8 megapixel camera (much like the Samsung Pixon that it will be sold alongside), and HSDPA internet access. As well as that, though, the Samsung Tocco Ultra adds a whole level of usability, but having a proper, slide-out keyboard.
In other words, anyone who wants a touch interface, but prefers texting, or dialling numbers, on an old school keypad, is going to right at home with the Samsung Tocco Ultra.

Samsung i8910 HD

The LG Viewty Smart is undoubtedly going to be a superb touch phone for those on more of a budget, and the Samsung Tocco Ultra takes the crown for being the most fashion-conscious. However, for the most exciting phone announced this year, we need to go back to Symbian, with the Samsung i8910 HD.

Finding the right smartphone for your needs

Author: Matt Sharp

Finding the right smartphone can be hard... but not if you read this article. Let's take a look at three phones and see who they'd be perfect for.

HTC Magic

Android is trying to take over the world, and its new home is the beautiful HTC Magic. It has all the good stuff that made the first Android phone (the G1) good, but puts it all in a touchscreen-only body, which is both sleek and sexy. Since the keyboard has been removed, the HTC Magic also has a full, onscreen keyboard, a first for any Android phone, lining it up as a direct rival to the iPhone. You also get the Android Marketplace, which lets you download and install third party apps to your HTC Magic, and it ends up creating a smartphone that really can morph into whatever you want it to be. It really is a kind of magic; and if you want the facility to utterly change your phone into something new, with custom apps, you want the HTC Magic.

Palm Pre

What does the Palm Pre offer that's different? Well, one could talk about the WebOS interface it uses, as it's unique in the annals of phone history. And indeed, there's one feature of WebOS, directly related to the keyboard, that makes the Palm Pre so cool. Universal search. Now, many phones do that, but the Palm Pre does it so much more cleverly. Just start typing what you want to know about, from the front screen, and the Palm Pre will search your contacts, apps, music, pictures, and even the internet, to interpret and find what you're looking for. That really is a cool feature, and it may well make the Palm Pre the coolest QWERTY phone out there. If you value the interface above all else, the Palm Pre is the phone for you.

Toshiba TG01

So, fighting for WebOS, there is the Palm Pre, with its mind-boggling interface.

Samsung - the king of 8MP phones

Author: Matt Sharp

Samsung have a history of making camera phones, and in the 8MP range, they make the best. Let's check out their three world-beaters.

Samsung Pixon - touching photos

The Samsung Pixon is Samsung's first 8MP phone, and it is truly a beauty. It has a huge touchscreen, a brilliant 8 megapixel camera, multimedia player, HSDPA, and GPS. Oh, and since this is one of the biggest buying factors nowadays, the Samsung Pixon is ALSO one of the best looking mobile phones on the market.

The Samsung Pixon was the first 8MP from the Korean manufacturer, and the Samsung Tocco Ultra takes the crown for being the most fashion-conscious. However, for the most exciting phone announced this year, we need to go back to Symbian, with the Samsung i8910 HD. What is Windows mobile voip?

Author: David Nalin

You might have heard of Windows mobile voip and it may be just a collection of words and letters. However, Windows mobile voip is set to be the new big thing, so if you have a smartphone it is definitely in your best interests to at least know what it is. When you know what something is and what it can do you can then make an informed decision about whether or not you need it. Until then it’s just a gut reaction and that could deprive you of some great technology. So let’s get you informed about Windows mobile voip.

Windows mobile voip is something that I think everyone should have, but of course the decision is all yours. Voip stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol – basically Windows mobile voip lets you make voice phone calls over the internet instead of over the phone. Why should you care? Well, if you are in the habit of making a lot of calls, or you don’t make many but when you do they are long or long distance, your phone bill could probably provide you with an excellent reason. I mean, you pay a huge amount of money for phone calls from and to your cell phone but what if you could reduce those costs? Well, Windows mobile voip can do that for you. When you make voice calls via the internet, you pay a tiny amount, often only pennies, to make a call that might otherwise cost you a lot of dollars. Good enough reason for you?

Other benefits of Windows mobile voip include the fact that if you are abroad or in a particularly isolated location, like a hotel in the middle of a forest or halfway up a mountain, you may not be able to get a cell phone signal. Up until the advent of Windows mobile voip if you wanted to make a call from your cell phone, or receive a call, you were completely dependent on the presence of a cell phone signal. Not anymore, though. Now you can make a call even when there is no cell phone network, because as long as there is a wireless internet connection available, you can just call using that, making Windows mobile voip a lifesaver in certain circumstances.

I mean, if you go on holiday and suddenly the chance comes up to make a deal that will assure your company’s future for the next three years, but your cell phone company has no roaming agreement with the country you are in, what are you going to do? Well, now you can just use Windows mobile voip to make that call over the internet for pennies, and because it costs so little you can make and receive calls all day long, as long as the wifi connection remains. Of course, you will have to pay for the calls, but the amount you will end up paying will be absolutely miniscule compared to what you would have had to pay if you were using the cell phone network and your cell phone minutes.

What's the difference between a smartphone and a feature phone?

Author: Matt Sharp

Let's check out what makes smartphones so special, by comparing one of the best, the Samsung i8910 HD, to two of the best feature phones available from LG and Samsung.

LG Arena - a whole new class of interface

Key to the incredible experience the LG Arena gives you is its interface, as it's the first phone to use LG's new S-Class UI. To visualise it, imagine a 3D cube, sitting on the screen of the LG Arena, and on each side of the cube, there are things like shortcuts to apps, links direct to your music, or other widgets that you can customise yourself. The fun part comes when you interact with the LG Arena, as you simply swipe across the screen, to rotate round those faces, and get to what content you want. It's remarkably intuitive, but more importantly, it makes the LG Arena fun to use, and that is a BIG selling point in 2009.

Samsung Tocco Ultra - Ultra Edition looks

Our next phone is something a bit different, because as well as a slide-out keypad, it's also got a superb touchscreen interface. It's the Samsung Tocco Ultra, and it really is a thing of beauty. As with the previous phone, the Samsung Tocco Ultra may not have a bona-fide smartphone OS, but it more than makes up for that with an exquisite interface, that makes the phone a real joy to use. Combine that with an 8MP camera, and true supermodel good looks, and you have a real winner in the Samsung Tocco Ultra.

Samsung Omnia HD - the most powerful video phone in the world?

As nice as the Samsung Tocco Ultra is, however, it's overshadowed by its 'big brother', the Samsung Omnia HD. There's a very good reason for that. Whilst it, like the Samsung Tocco Ultra has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung Omnia HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Never before has a phone been able to capture video at that massive high resolution, and coincidentally (or is it coincidence? Maybe not...), the Samsung Omnia HD captures high-def video at the exact quality that Youtube display high-def videos at. It's very possible that the Samsung Omnia HD was designed with its main feature being the ability to get yourself on Youtube, in high-definition. And while the LG Arena has the sleek new S-Class UI, the Samsung Omnia HD combines its TouchWiz interface with Symbian, giving it true smartphone capability. Now add the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung Omnia HD not only shows the difference between feature phones and smartphones, but also, is one of the best phones ever made!

8MP mobile phones - which is the best in the world?

Author: Matt Sharp

Let's check out the three top contenders, and see which is the best 8MP phone in the world.

LG Viewty Smart

Which phone fits the phrase 'phone that's nearly a smartphone, without actually being a smartphone'? It's the aptly named LG Viewty Smart.

Put simply, the LG Viewty Smart is the smartest non-smartphone in the world!

Samsung Tocco Ultra

But what happens if you want a phone that has both a touchscreen AND a keypad? Then for you, there's the Samsung Tocco Ultra, that combines the touchscreen goodness of the Tocco, with the sleek looks of the Ultra Edition series, to make a phone that's shockingly thin, considering it includes both a huge touchscreen, and a full alphanumeric keypad.

The Samsung Tocco Ultra also inherits the TouchWiz interface from its predecessor, and that makes for an incredible user experience. The features are better than the Arena, too, as it also has an 8 megapixel camera.

Samsung Omnia HD

So, we come to the final phone in this shootout, that began with the LG Viewty Smart. It's the smartest non-smartphone in the world, and the Samsung Tocco Ultra may well be the prettiest. So, now we've got slim and sexy let's see a phone that's slim, sexy, AND a powerful smartphone: the Samsung Omnia HD. It takes the crown of most powerful on this list for two reasons. First, the Samsung Omnia HD is built on Symbian, so whilst the interface will be familiar (the top shell is TouchWiz again), the phone gets a massive power boost over its siblings, giving it real smartphone credentials. The other factor that makes the Samsung Omnia HD so spectacular is video. Not only does it take still images at 8 megapixels, but the Samsung Omnia HD will also record video in true, 720p resolution, high-definition video. No other phone in the world can do that yet, so the Samsung Omnia HD must surely be the best 8MP phone in existence!

No matter your needs, there's a smartphone OS for you!

Author: Matt Sharp

Let's check out the three frontrunners in the war of the smartphone operating systems: WebOS, Windows Mobile, and Symbian.

Palm Pre - the sleek one

So, representing Symbian, you have the Sony Ericsson Idou, with its double-hit combo of astounding camera and music. Flying the flag for Windows Mobile, there's the Toshiba TG01, with astonishing power and an immense screen. In the world of interfaces, essentially, the Palm Pre just cannot be beaten!

Toshiba TG01

Windows Mobile, though, goes down a different route.

Samsung i8910 HD

On the one hand, there's the Palm Pre, with its awesome WebOS interface. And on the other, there's the Toshiba TG01, with bags of processing power. And then, there's the Samsung i8910 HD, and it has one big advantage over the other two. Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video.
