Touchscreen Wonderphones from Samsung

Author: Matt Sharp

Let's take a look at three phones that show off just how good a touchscreen experience Samsung can deliver: the Jet, the Tocco Ultra, and the awesome i8910 HD.

Samsung Jet

The Samsung Jet is all about one thing: speed. And to make it mind-bendingly quick, the Samsung Jet has a processor running at 800MHz, faster than just about any other phone currently on sale. Combine that with a beautiful 3D 'Cubic' interface, and the Samsung Jet becomes a true work of art, that's both easy and rewarding to use. As for features, you get a 5MP camera, and lightning fast internet access, making the Samsung Jet the obvious choice if you want a non-smartphone that's nearly as powerful as a true smartphone.

Samsung Tocco Ultra

What would happen if you took an awesome camera, the fantastic TouchWiz UI and a sliding keypad, and put it into an ultra-thin body? You'd get the gorgeous Samsung Tocco Ultra, one of the prettiest phones Samsung have ever made. It really is quite astounding that, despite being less than a millimetre thicker than the Jet, the Samsung Tocco Ultra manages to squeeze in that beautiful keyboard. If amazing looks (with superb features) are what you seek from a phone, then the Samsung Tocco Ultra is perfect for you.

Samsung i8910 HD

For sheer speed, you'll find it hard to find a phone as fast as the Samsung Jet with its 800MHz processor. As for supermodel looks, there's the Samsung Tocco Ultra, which has an even SLEEKER design, and a superb 8MP camera. And then, sitting right at the top of their product range, there's the awesome Samsung i8910 HD. It doesn't just have the looks. It doesn't just have an 8MP camera. The Samsung i8910 HD is a true smartphone, using the powerful Symbian OS. On top of that, though, it has a 3D version of the TouchWiz UI, making it simply incredible to use. And finally, there's the Samsung i8910 HD's party piece: its camera doesn't just take phenomenal photos; you see, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone in history to record true HD video. It really is as powerful as phones come, and if you want an uncompromising smartphone, with just about every bell and whistle imaginable, you need the Samsung i8910 HD.

The battle for smartphone dominance

Author: Matt Sharp

As smartphones get more powerful, the operating system is turning into a key buying choice for many people. Let's take a look at how three of the most powerful stack up against each other.

Windows Mobile - Toshiba TG01

To make Windows Mobile run at its best, you need a powerful phone, and the Toshiba TG01 is the most powerful phone that's ever hit the market. With a processor running at 1GHz, the Toshiba TG01 has a faster processor than any other phone out there, running very close to laptop territory. Combine that with a 4.1 inch screen, and the Toshiba TG01 is, without a doubt, the best Windows Mobile phone out there. Office Mobile lets you work away from the office, and when it's time to let your hair down, that big screen, as well as additional technology gleaned from their TVs, makes the Toshiba TG01 a nigh-on perfect media phone.

Symbian - Samsung i8910 HD

However, it's not THE perfect media phone, because there's another candidate for that title: the Samsung i8910 HD. First things first, though, as the Samsung i8910 HD is also a highly capable smartphone, running on the Symbian OS. That gives you true smartphone power, but it's not the main selling point of the Samsung i8910 HD. That comes in the form of its camera. That camera isn't just an 8MP stills camera, it will also capture video in true 720p HD resolution. No other phone will yet do that, and it makes the Samsung i8910 HD a truly tempting purchase.

WebOS - Palm Pre

So, there's the Toshiba TG01, which relies on masses of raw power to give you an exceptional experience. And then, there's the Samsung i8910 HD, which wows you with its Symbian OS and its HD video recording. But for ease of use and sleekness, nothing can touch the Palm Pre. With its WebOS operating system, the Palm Pre is easily the most intuitive phone on the market. Not only that, but the integration between apps on the Palm Pre is like nothing ever seen before, making it feel like the phone is, at times, doing your thinking for you. There's never been a phone like the Palm Pre, and for that reason, it must surely be the phone of the year, so far.

HP TouchSmart IQ500 Review - Continued

Author: Gill Critchley

The screen display on the HP TouchSmart IQ500 is superb. The 22in panel produces bright, vibrant colours, and the natural resolution of 1,680 x 1,050 makes high-detail areas appear clear and sharp. It feels suitably tough, too, and the people at HP deserve a round of applause for their smart thinking as they have put a grip on the bottom of the stand so that the monitor won’t slide around on your desk when you’re touching the screen. The left side of the IQ500 offers a decent selection of ports and sockets too, you get five USB ports and several media-friendly sockets, including audio jacks, an S/PDIF output and S-Video out socket. There's also a Gigabit Ethernet port, for those who have no use for the built-in 802.11bg, and draft-n wireless networking. On the right-hand side is a slot-loading DVD writer, a 4-in-1 card reader and a mini-FireWire socket, as well as a volume control and mute button. Finally, there's a small light to illuminate the keyboard and mouse when they're close to the main unit. The internal components are mainly mobile parts, helping to ensure quiet operation. The 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo T5850 as well as the 4GB of RAM, is powerful enough to handle most things you throw at it. However; its GeForce 9300M graphics chip isn't up to serious 3D gaming, but that's not what the IQ500 is intended for. This HP TouchSmart also supports decent speakers which is a very important feature for a multi-media orientated computer which this one most definitely is. There are two speakers on the front of the unit which provide surprisingly crisp treble and a subwoofer on the rear which provides a very powerful bass which really helps when viewing movies or music. There's also a hybrid tuner supporting both analogue and Freeview digital TV signals, enabling you to watch programmes and record them onto the generous 500GB hard disk. The only negative thing about this is that it only has a single-tuner card, so you can't watch one channel while recording another. After this, the only other point that this HP TouchSmart would fall down on is the fact that it lacks a Blu-ray drive. Apart from this everything else is superb; the touchscreen interface makes the HP tremendously easy to use, and there's enough power to keep everything smooth and responsive. If you're not concerned about the lack of an HD video player, the TouchSmart IQ500 makes an attractive and versatile addition to any room.

The HP TouchSmart is one of the most attractive and innovative desktop PCs out there at the moment so it is definitely worth trying to spot desktop PC deals on this computer. Most desktop computers don’t support touchscreen technology but the TouchSmart does and it is this feature that makes the unit so efficient and a pleasure to use.

HP TouchSmart IQ500 Review

Author: Gill Critchley

The HP TouchSmart PC is a very stylish computer and often the problem with these PCs is that they may look great in the home but when it comes to performance, they usually fall down. However; this PC seems different as it adds something distinctive to the mix. As the name suggests, the TouchSmart IQ500 comes with a touchscreen - something you don’t often see in a desktop PC. To really utilise this feature, the IQ500 uses HP's proprietary TouchSmart software. Double-tap the TouchSmart icon and the Vista desktop is replaced by a front-end not unlike Windows Media Center. Its finger-friendly, super-sized icons are easy to use, and users will find that they won’t struggle to get to grips with this very different and innovative interface. By swiping your fingers left and right across the screen you are able to scroll through a horizontal menu with links to games, movies, your music collection, websites and RSS feeds. This can be customised so that it suits your computing needs, for example; you can put any program, website or RSS feed you care to add on your desktop - for each new item you add, a 'tile' is added to the menu. If you’re more of a creative person then you’ll appreciate just how ideal the interface is for tasks such as collating music into playlists and for editing images; you can correct red-eye with one button and crop and rotate with another. This computer isn’t completely perfect however, as the touchscreen isn't quite as accurate as is necessary, and it's difficult to select tiny taskbar items or links on web pages. It's clear the TouchSmart's oversized icons are largely out of necessity and you may find that when working in Windows applications you find it easier to revert back to using the mouse. It’s also worth noting that the keyboard isn’t used easily on your lap as it has no built-in trackpad or media-specific controls.

The smartest non-smartphones in the world

Author: Matt Sharp

Not everyone wants a high-end smartphone, instead favouring a feature phone. But the thing is, modern day feature phones are not that far off being smartphones themselves. Let's take a look at three of the best.

Sony Ericsson W995

If there's one name that really stands out in the world of music phones, it's 'Walkman'. What happens, though, if you take a Walkman phone, and give it an 8MP camera that's straight out of a Cyber-Shot phone? You get the utterly brilliant Sony Ericsson W995!

The combination of Walkman and Cyber-Shot is what makes the Sony Ericsson W995 so very compelling. Top-end imaging is just a button-press away, and the Sony Ericsson W995 always makes music sound better than anything you can imagine. It doesn't have a smartphone OS, but with a phone as good as the Sony Ericsson W995, it just won't matter.

Samsung Tocco Ultra

Our next phone is something a bit different, because as well as a slide-out keypad, it's also got a superb touchscreen interface. It's the Samsung Tocco Ultra, and it really is a thing of beauty. As with the previous phone, the Samsung Tocco Ultra may not have a bona-fide smartphone OS, but it more than makes up for that with an exquisite interface, that makes the phone a real joy to use. Combine that with an 8MP camera, and true supermodel good looks, and you have a real winner in the Samsung Tocco Ultra.

LG Viewty Smart

While the Sony Ericsson W995 brings you the absolute best in music and imaging, the Samsung Tocco Ultra beats it in terms of looks. But there's a phone out there that fits the phrase 'phone that's nearly a smartphone, without actually being a smartphone': the aptly named LG Viewty Smart. Following on from the original Viewty, the LG Viewty Smart follows the same design ethos of having a touchscreen only interface (the awesome S-Class interface), squeezed into a slim body, but it ups the ante with a superb 8MP camera. It also has HSDPA, making it a truly portable internet device. Put simply, the LG Viewty Smart is the smartest non-smartphone in the world!

The best smartphones in the UK!

Author: Matt Sharp

Smartphones are the big thing in 2009. Let's take a look at the best three smartphones currently (or very soon to be) available in the UK.

Nokia N97

Technically it's only available for pre-order, but the Nokia N97 is already one of the hottest phones of the year. As the second phone to feature the new Symbian Touch OS, the Nokia N97 is a joy to use, and it further enhances your user experience with a superb slide-out QWERTY keyboard. That makes entering messages, or chatting to your friends on the Nokia N97 a quick and painless experience. As well as that keyboard, the Nokia N97 also gives you a brilliant 5 megapixel camera, and one of the best multimedia players on the planet (plus access to the Ovi Store); good job, then, with all that cool stuff you'll want to put on your phone that the Nokia N97 also comes with 32Gb of memory.

Samsung i8910 HD

Our next hot phone is another Symbian-powered handset: the Samsung i8910 HD. This follows a different route to the Nokia N97, as it doesn't have a keyboard. The Samsung i8910 HD is a touchscreen only beast, and it truly is a magnificent phone. There's a one very crucial reason for that: it's not only got a superb 8MP camera, but it will also record video at full 720p HD resolution. That fact alone is enough to make the Samsung i8910 HD one of the hottest phones of the year, but when you fact in its sheer beauty, and one of the best screens (using AMOLED technology) ever seen on a phone, it only serves to make the Samsung i8910 HD an even more appealing prospect.

HTC Magic

So, two of the top three smartphones in the UK are Symbian-powered: there's the Nokia N97, with that brilliant keyboard, and on the other hand, there's the Samsung i8910 HD, with an incredibly gorgeous body and that astounding camera, which rocks the world with true HD video. The third phone, though, isn't Symbian; instead, it's the Android-powered HTC Magic. There are two key factors that make the HTC Magic so alluring, and both stem from its Android OS. First, there's the sheer user-friendliness of the HTC Magic, combined with tight integration with Google's services. Second, there's its app store. You can get so much extra software for your HTC Magic, through that app store, that it can very quickly become a completely different phone to the one you bought!

Email phones that can rival the Blackberry range

Author: Matt Sharp

The Blackberry is the most famous email phone in the world. But in this modern age, have other phones caught up? Can other phones now beat the humble Blackberry at its own game? Let's find out.

HTC Snap - 'Inner Circle'

First up is Windows Mobile, and today, it's to be found in the body of the HTC Snap. Anyone who's used Windows Mobile before will know it's exceptionally good at emails and info management, and the HTC Snap is no exception to that rule. You get the same excellent POP3 and Exchange Server (for your corporate emails) support, but the HTC Snap also includes something new: Inner Circle. This is a new feature for the HTC Snap, that lets you set an Inner Circle of friends or important people, and automatically prioritises emails from them, to make sure you get the emails that matter the most, first.

HTC Magic - tight integration with GoogleMail

Next up is the Android contender, in this case, the HTC Magic. What it brings to the party is incredibly tight integration with Google's services; and yes, that includes GoogleMail. The HTC Magic makes receiving emails on your GoogleMail (or Gmail, if you're in the States) account, and the tight integration really is a sight to behold.

Palm Pre - tight integration with EVERYTHING

However, both the HTC Snap, with its Inner Circle feature, and the HTC Magic, with tight Google integration, are outdone by a new phone that integrates so much more, even more tightly than the Magic. It is, of course, the Palm Pre, and it can integrate your GoogleMail service, too. And your Exchange Server for corporate emails. And Facebook for your personal friends. Basically, there's never been a phone as well connected as the Palm Pre; it makes it so very easy to link up services from all those email behemoths, and more, in one device. The Palm Pre is easily the best on this list, but the original question was whether it can beat the Blackberry range. Well, alas, no. The Palm Pre may be good, but if your sole concern is email, there is still only one name you go for. And that's Blackberry, with their revolutionary instant 'push' emails. In email terms, Blackberry are just THAT good.

Samsung - super touchscreen phone countdown!

Author: Matt Sharp

Let's take a look at three phones from Samsung that take touchscreen phones to exciting new playgrounds…

Samsung Jet

Coming soon from the Korean manufacturer is the new Samsung Jet, a touchscreen phone with a brand new interface, based on a 3D cube. Whilst it shares many design similarities with TouchWiz, the new Cubic UI in the Samsung Jet is a whole new experience, where you can flip between screens by dragging your finger, and rotating the cube round. The UI is brilliant, but in terms of feature, the Samsung Jet is no slouch, either. You get a 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA, and a superb web browser, and although the Samsung Jet isn't a smartphone (nor meant to be one), it's one of the nicest feature phones out there.

Samsung Tocco Ultra

However, if you're after something a little bit higher spec, then the phone for you must surely be the Samsung Tocco Ultra. It shares the sleek looks and incredible TouchWiz UI of the Tocco Lite, but the Samsung Tocco Ultra also comes with a slide-out keypad, for people who like to have clicky buttons as well as the touchscreen. And then, of course, there's the camera built-in to the Samsung Tocco Ultra, weighing in at a meaty 8 megapixels. If you want a superb looking phone, with an astounding camera, but want something cheaper than a smartphone, the Samsung Tocco Ultra is the phone for you.

Samsung i8910 HD

The Samsung Jet is undoubtedly going to be a superb touch phone for those on more of a budget, and the Samsung Tocco Ultra takes the crown for being the most fashion-conscious. However, for the most exciting phone announced this year, we need to go back to Symbian, with the Samsung i8910 HD. It takes the crown of most powerful on this list for two reasons. First, the Samsung i8910 HD is built on Symbian, so whilst the interface will be familiar (the top shell is TouchWiz again), the phone gets a massive power boost over its siblings, giving it real smartphone credentials. The other factor that makes the Samsung i8910 HD so spectacular is video. Not only does it take still images at 8 megapixels, but the Samsung i8910 HD will also record video in true, 720p resolution, high-definition video. No other phone in the world can do that yet, so the Samsung i8910 HD has to be one of the most exciting phones ever, not just in 2009.

The New Wave Of Smartphones!

Author: Matt Sharp

Let's take a look at three smartphones that are redefining what people expect from their phones.

Nokia N97

The Nokia N97 takes the Symbian touch interface, and builds it into the body of a true smartphone, with sliding QWERTY keyboard, a larger screen, and a massive 32Gb of built-in memory. There are very few phones on the market that can match it for sheer performance, and... well... the word 'powerhouse' could have almost been made exclusively for the Nokia N97. In addition to the obvious extra benefits you get from a QWERTY keyboard, it also includes a great camera, that comes in at 5 megapixels. Without a doubt, the Nokia N97 is the most advanced Symbian phone in production at the moment.

HTC Magic

Now let's take a look at a phone that goes down the open source route: the HTC Magic. The first important fact about the HTC Magic, and the bit that has made it so talked about, is its operating system: Google Android. As it's only the second phone to officially go on sale using Android, the HTC Magic has garnered an awful lot of trade and consumer interest. Even more importantly, the HTC Magic is the first Android phone to feature a keyboard-less, touchscreen-only design, a thing that seems to be all the rage in 2009.

Samsung i8910 HD

On the one hand, there's the Nokia N97, with its 3.5 inch screen, and a full, slide-out keyboard. And on the other, there's the HTC Magic, with Google Android. And then, there's the Samsung i8910 HD, and it has one big advantage over the other two. Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Never before has a phone been able to capture video at that massive high resolution, and coincidentally (or is it coincidence? Maybe not...), the Samsung i8910 HD captures high-def video at the exact quality that Youtube display high-def videos at. It's very possible that the Samsung i8910 HD was designed with its main feature being the ability to get yourself on Youtube, in high-definition. Combine that with the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung i8910 HD, just like the other two on this list, deserves its place as one of the phones of the year!

What is render farm?

Author: jamiehanson

Render farm, as you may assume, is not a landscape for your cattle but more or less a space used for something else. Render farm is a special space planned for cluster or group, not of cattle, but computers! Wireless connectivity is a brand new concept of communication that Internet technology has developed. To recognize the notion of render farm is just like understanding the link between the computer and broadband. This means without broadband you will not be able to access to Internet 24x7 which helps you to stay connected to the whole world. Essentially, a render farm is a computer group formed to render CGI-Computer Generated Imagery, using the method of offline batch processing. Visual effects in movies and television are specifically created by it. Render farm helps you to take visuals from and to the machines that are in the computer cluster. Render farm controls images and is very different from render wall, which is a complex tiled display used for real time rendering. The rendering images are analogous activities where several estimations can be done concurrently and autonomously. Hence, the upload of main source material and download of final and finished images are not linked or related to each other in the processing with major communication among processors. Eventually, the outcome is very fine imagery. The initial source materials are textures and models. Since years, the development of computer power and flexibility of different faculties have allowed an image to render in relatively lesser time. The rising expectations for excellent quality images has been appropriately met by improved and advanced computations meaning, images developed at the time of highest stage of development. Thus, the ultimate and the desired images are not only created promptly with fine quality results, but are more complex relatively. High resolution images can be generated proficiently in lesser time, by you. The entire time spent to generate high quality, realistic images is quite limited and moreover, the time saved is considerably more. realize better quality work, there is a need felt for enhanced computer power. The desire to produce images faster is now fulfilled and this is all due to render farm. Render farms work as sources to try to generate high and better quality online imagery. The queue manager aids in handling the basic operation and performance. The render farms are enormous enough to employ the queue manager machinery to dissolve the processes mechanically. The processes are dissolved into integrated processors. Each integrated processes helps in rendering one complete image or some images or for rendering one specific sub section of an image, that is called segment or tile. A software package serving as a client server package, basically focusing in the industry is where the Render farm is found. This package helps to have unbeaten communication between the queue manager and several processors.

OS Battle - Android vs Symbian vs Windows Mobile

Author: Matt Sharp

The mobile OS is the central key to making a truly great smartphone. Let's check out the big three operating systems in the mobile arena.

HTC Magic - the basics

The first important fact about the HTC Magic, and the bit that has made it so talked about, is its operating system: Google Android. As it's only the second phone to officially go on sale using Android, the HTC Magic has garnered an awful lot of trade and consumer interest. Even more importantly, the HTC Magic is the first Android phone to feature a keyboard-less, touchscreen-only design, a thing that seems to be all the rage in 2009. It's certainly more of a looker than its predecessor, the G1, and that fusion of enhanced looks and the still-awesome power of Android makes the HTC Magic a very compelling phone indeed. If innovation is your thing, this is the phone for you.

Samsung i8910 HD

However, if video is more your thing, another phone easily beats the HTC Magic (and every other phone out there): the Samsung i8910 HD. The HD on the end of the name isn't just there for show, it signifies that the Samsung i8910 HD is the first phone in history that can record 720p HD-Video. Conveniently, that's the same definition Youtube shows its high-def videos at, so is it possible that the Samsung i8910 HD is actually the perfect HD Youtube phone? Time will tell, but one thing is certain; the Samsung i8910 HD is the best phone to get if you want the best camera.

Toshiba TG01

So, on the Symbian front, you have the Samsung i8910 HD, with its frighteningly powerful camera and video. As for Android, there's the innovative HTC Magic. But Windows Mobile goes down a different route. You see, Windows Mobile needs two things to run at its best: a powerful processor and a big display. Well, say hello to the Toshiba TG01, the phone with the fastest processor AND the biggest display in the history of phones! Weighing in at 1GHz and 4.1 inches respectively, those specs mean that the Toshiba TG01 will run Windows Mobile more smoothly than any other phone in existence; as well as that with that immense screen, the Toshiba TG01 makes drilling down into menus, and actually getting into the internals of Windows, so much easier. If power is your thing (and lets be honest, who doesn't want a powerful phone?), then the Toshiba TG01 is the phone for you!

Intense Imaging - the three best 8MP phones on the market

Author: Matt Sharp

Handsets with 8 megapixel cameras have become the new baseline standard for top-end camera phones. Anything less than that just isn't a top-ender. Let's check out the three sexiest 8MP phones currently on the market.

LG Viewty Smart

The first Viewty was one of the most successful phones LG have ever made, and now, the true successor to the name has arrived in the shape of the LG Viewty Smart. Featuring the new touch-based S-Class UI, the LG Viewty Smart is an incredible phone to use, with slick animations and smooth transitions between screens and menus. As well as the 8MP camera in the LG Viewty Smart, you also get a stunning multimedia player, and super-fast internet access, making the LG Viewty Smart one of the coolest camera phones out there.

Samsung Tocco Ultra

What if you want a keypad as well as a touchscreen, though? Well, the answer is the Samsung Tocco Ultra. This features a beautiful touchscreen, AND a slide-out keypad, for people who prefer having tactile buttons to dial and text with. The other key selling point about the Samsung Tocco Ultra is its looks. Despite having a touchscreen, 8MP camera, HSDPA and a full keypad, it's still one of the thinnest phones Samsung have ever made. Put simply, if looks are your thing, the Samsung Tocco Ultra is quite possibly the prettiest phone on this list.

Samsung i8910 HD

No matter how good the LG Viewty Smart and Samsung Tocco Ultra are (and they are VERY good), one thing that neither phone is is a smartphone. So, if it's a smartphone you want, the natural choice has to be the Samsung i8910 HD, one of the most powerful phones yet released in 2009. It shares the TouchWiz UI with the Tocco Ultra, but the difference is that in the Samsung i8910 HD, that interface sits on top of Symbian, making it a real smartphone powerhouse. That's not the big party piece with the Samsung i8910 HD, however; THAT is its camera, because as well as being an 8MP still camera, it can also capture true HD video at 720p resolution. So, while the LG Viewty Smart has the cool factor of its predecessor, and while the Samsung Tocco Ultra has the looks, the Samsung i8910 HD is simply the most powerful camera phone in this list.

Warp Speed - mobile phones are now competing on how fast they are?

Author: Matt Sharp

With the advent of the iPhone 3GS, how fast a phone is has become a big selling point. How fast is accesses apps, or moves between programs is now important. Let's check out three phones that embody the principle of super speed.

iPhone 3GS

The key selling point about the iPhone 3GS is speed; after all, that's what the S in the name stands for. Essentially, Apple have promised the iPhone 3GS will be up to twice as fast and responsive as its forerunner, but how it achieves it is a bit of a mystery, since Apple are steadfastly refusing to release the internal specs of the iPhone 3GS. So, the processor speed and internal architecture are unconfirmed (it's rumoured to run at 600MHz, though), but the results are said to be plain to see. App speed on the iPhone 3GS is increased, and it's said that everything responds even more swiftly. We'll finally see for sure when the iPhone 3GS is released...

Palm Pre

While the internal specs of the iPhone 3GS are cloaked in mystery, the Palm Pre has a much more obvious reason for its speed (demonstrations have shown it seems to be a lot faster than the original iPhone 3G). Quite simply, the Palm Pre is down to the incredible optimisation and sleekness of its operating system, WebOS. It's such a slick, well-coded operating system, that the Palm Pre is incredibly responsive, even down to the screen spinning when the phone's turned on its side being almost instantaneous, with the Palm Pre showing almost no lag whatsoever.

Toshiba TG01

SO, the iPhone 3GS may be a bit of a wildcard, as it's not confirmed what its processor's running at, but to use a car analogy for the Palm Pre, that phone is the equivalent of a Lotus Elise; it relies on phenomenal handling over raw power. To take that analogy to its logical conclusion, let's take a look at a phone that is the equivalent of a 1000bhp TVR Speed 12: the Toshiba TG01. That's actually a good analogy, as what the Toshiba TG01 has that's unique is a Snapdragon processor. The Palm Pre relies on a sleek OS, but the Toshiba TG01 relies on giving its Windows Mobile OS immense amounts of power, as the Snapdragon chip comes in at an astounding 1GHz. So, we have three separate solutions on display here: the iPhone 3GS, with whatever its mystery-shrouded internal architecture delivers; the Palm Pre, with stunning software optimisation; and the Toshiba TG01, the ultra-powerful one. All different, but all proving that device speed is one of the important new battlegrounds for phones, just as it is for laptops, to fight in.

LG vs. Samsung - who makes the best 8MP phone?

Author: Matt Sharp

LG and Samsung are in constant conflict to top each other, it often seems. But who makes the best 8MP phone? Let's find out!

LG Viewty Smart

The Viewty is one of LG's most successful phones ever, and now, here's its successor, the LG Viewty Smart. Before we go any further, let's clear something up: despite its name, the LG Viewty Smart, isn't a smartphone. It's a feature phone, but what a feature phone the LG Viewty Smart is! The camera is superb, and the S-Class user interface is second-to-none, making it a truly beautiful phone to use, as well as having one of the best camera's in the business.

Samsung Tocco Ultra

But what if you want a phone that has both a touchscreen AND a keypad? Then say hello to the Samsung Tocco Ultra, which combines the touchscreen goodness of the original Tocco, with the sleek looks of the Ultra Edition series, to make a phone that's shockingly thin, considering it includes both a huge touchscreen, and a full alphanumeric keypad. The Samsung Tocco Ultra also inherits the TouchWiz interface from its predecessor, and that makes for an incredible user experience. The features are better than the Arena, too, because as you might have guessed, it also has an 8 megapixel camera.

Samsung i8910 HD

Both the LG Viewty Smart and the Samsung Tocco Ultra are incredibly pretty phones, but neither of them are smartphones. So, a phone that exceeds the sex appeal of both, and has real smartphone power: the Samsung i8910 HD. In this case, the HD in its name isn't an accident or a cheapo marketing gimmick; the Samsung i8910 HD is the first phone in history that will record true HD video. So, as well as the sublime photos it produces, you also get pin-sharp video. And with the rest of the phone, things just get even better. The Samsung i8910 HD may have a TouchWiz interface reminiscent of the previous two, but what that UI sit on top of is Symbian. What you're looking at, in the Samsung i8910 HD is a true smartphone, that will record better video than any other phone in the world, and that looks better than most of them, too. There's little wonder, then, that the Samsung i8910 HD is already being touted as one of the best phones of 2009.

Palm Pre - can it beat the iPhone 3GS and HTC Magic?

Author: Matt Sharp

Now that the Palm Pre has been unleashed on the world, let's take a look at it, and see how it plans to overthrow its rivals.

Looks and Design

First up, let's take a look at the Palm Pre's hardware, as compared to what are probably its two closest rivals: the HTC Magic and the iPhone 3GS. Of those three phones, the HTC Magic is probably the one that scores the lowest in terms of looks, as it looks the most 'boring' of the three. The Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS, on the other hand, both have sleek looks, with glossy, curvy panels. It's a very close-run thing between the iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre, and it simply isn't possible to decide which is the best, looks-wise. It'll simply come down to which feels right when you hold it.

Hardware Features

With hardware features, once again, all three phones are pretty evenly matched, with 3 megapixel cameras on all of them. One key advantage the Palm Pre has over the others, however, is that both the iPhone 3GS and HTC Magic lack hardware keyboards, while the Palm Pre has a full QWERTY keyboard. For messaging and emails, that's a big plus. And whilst the Palm Pre has a smaller screen than both the iPhone 3GS and HTC Magic, its touch-sensitive screen actually extends, unbelievably, beyond the screen itself. It could be argued that they could have given the Palm Pre a bigger screen, but the sheer fact the screen extends, in effect, beyond the screen is a sure to turn heads, and it gives the Pre the edge on hardware features, despite the iPhone 3GS having much more internal memory (coming in at either 16 or 32Gb, compared to the Palm Pre's 8Gb).

Software and Interface

Finally, we come to interfaces. The iPhone 3GS has the latest iPhone 3.0 software, which brings with it such cool features as voice control throughout the device, and the ability to edit videos captured with the camera. The HTC Magic, meanwhile, uses widgets, allowing you to customise the front end of your phone in any way you want. Also included in the HTC Magic is tight integration with Google apps, such as Gmail and Gtalk. However, in terms of interfaces, the Palm Pre is on a whole other level; its WebOS interface has to be seen to be believed, as it's quite simply the slickest OS ever seen on a mobile phone. EVERYTHING is achieved through a variety of intuitive gesture and swipe controls, and as for integration and synergy between apps, the Palm Pre leaves even the HTC Magic in the dust. Of these three phones, it's a close thing, but the Palm Pre is good enough to beat both of its rivals.

New iPhone 3GS introduced - Will Speed, flexibility and innovative GPS system make it a new hit?

Author: Stig Kristoffersen

New and faster iPhone 3GS

The same exteriors, but inside it is different. A new price model has been introduced as the basis model will cost USD 99 for the Americans.

Anti theft system is introduced on the new iPhone as well, which makes it easier to allocate and to stop misuse of your phone.

Over hundred new features were presented to the audience, and the new iPhone 3GS seems to deliver more to the users, it remains to see if it will strike a cord amongst the developers as well.
We look forward to see new applications that will take care of the upgrades offered to the users.

The yearly Apple developer’s conference had drawn a crowd as usual. As expected the Apple boss Phil Schiller could reveal a new and faster iPhone, called iPhone 3GS. It is supposed to be faster than the one available in the market now and the S stands for, yes you guessed it – Speed. The new cell phone will be able to download faster as well.

The iPhone 3GS will get HSDPA connection, which will make it faster on the turbo 3G network. With a new camera it will also get an upgrade with respect to megapixels as it will get 3 megapixels and will have autofocus functionality. The new model will also be able to edit and share video on the phone.

On the exterior it will be no changes, as all changes are under the hood so to speak. It will have a compass for automatic orientation of the map on the GPS and a possibility you lots of accessories to it as well that will make it more suitable for use in the car. It will now be able to connect to the car stereo via a Bluetooth or USB connection.

Apple will also make sure this model gets a new price model for the version with least memory. For the Americans the new basis model will cost 99 USD.

If you are one of those who always misplace your phone and wonder were it has gone? Well, what about unwanted snoozing into the content of your phone and try to call for your money? The new iPhone makes it possible to fix all of this from a Windows or Mac close by.

The cell phone can be located from a PC and pop up on a map for its location. It can be locked and notify the finder of the phone that it is missing and can be erased if the finder of the cell phone do not deliver it back. Locating the phone happens through the GPS in the cell phone and the alarm that alert that the phone is missing will be there regardless of the phone is on or off.

There are over hundred changes in the new iPhone 3GS and in addition the new operating system 3.0 will be in all iPhones from now on. But not all owners of iPhones will get this benefit as owner of phones older than 2 years will not be able to get MMS on their phones.

The upgrade is free for iPhone owners or for around 20 USD for the iPod Touch owners.

A new Mac was also presented during the venue were new Apple laptops were presented. A 13 inch screen model has been upgraded to become a member of the Pro serieand has got accessories like SD card reader and a better screen.

Samsung i8910 HD - is it all it's cracked up to be?

Author: Matt Sharp

The Samsung i8910 HD is set to be one of the most exciting phones of 2009. Let's take a look at three key areas where it excels.

Sleek Samsung Design

One thing Samsung know how to do well is sleek design, and what that means is the Samsung i8910 HD is one of the sexiest smartphones on the market. That's been achieved by not only making the Samsung i8910 HD super slim, but giving it one of the single best screens ever seen on a mobile device. The Samsung i8910 HD has a 3.7 inch AMOLED screen, giving it one of the brightest and most colour-rich displays on the market.

Incredible Symbian Interface

However, the brilliance of the Samsung i8910 HD extends beyond its looks, through to its TouchWiz interface, built on top of Symbian, a 3D, touch-friendly affair that's a real joy to use. However, let's compare it to two of its rival operating systems. First, there's the HTC Magic, using Google Android, and whilst it is arguably as touch-friendly as the Samsung i8910 HD, it's no way near as pretty. Then, there's the Palm Pre, and that's where the Samsung i8910 HD faces a major hurdle, as the WebOS powering the Palm Pre is like nothing ever seen before. It takes touch-friendliness to entirely new levels, and integrates apps to an unimaginable degree. But that's saying more about the Palm Pre, really; the Palm Pre's prowess is astonishing, letting its interface can beat the Samsung i8910 HD, when the Samsung is already so nice to use!

Camera and true HD Video

There's one area, though, where the Samsung i8910 HD is absolutely peerless: its camera. At 8 megapixels, it's a formidable stills camera (although 12mP phones later in the year will top its photo performance), and easily dispatches the HTC Magic and Palm Pre, both of which have to make do with 3 megapixels. But it's with video that the Samsung i8910 HD really shines, as it's the first phone in the world to record actual, 720p HD video. No other phone can do that yet, and it's why the Samsung i8910 HD, which also lets you upload HD video direct to Youtube, through its high speed internet connection, is one of the most talked about phones of the year.

Which is the most exciting phone of 2009?

Author: Matt Sharp

There is a question asked daily: which is the most exciting phone of 2008? Let's check out three possible contenders!

Nokia N97

After the triumphant launch of the Nokia 5800, which was only ever meant to be a mid-range phone, Nokia need a new top-ender to really wow the public. And that top-ender is the hyper-powered Nokia N97. It takes the brand new Symbian Touch interface, and adds in bags more power, as well as a full QWERTY keyboard. Even starting with the looks, it's a truly stunning phone, with sleek surfaces and a minimalist design making the Nokia N97 truly a beautiful sight to behold. However, the impressive nature of the Nokia N97 doesn't end with the exterior, as it's what's inside that really impresses. Equipped with a 5 megapixel camera, it effortlessly switches from phone to camera, letting you leave your separate camera at home.

Toshiba TG01

Meanwhile, Symbian's rival Windows Mobile is being taken to dizzying new heights in the Toshiba TG01. Whereas the Idou is a smartphone that concentrates on its entertainment features, the Toshiba TG01 is an all-round smartphone that deals in raw power. That's because the Toshiba TG01 not only has the biggest screen on any mobile phone (4.1 inches), but it also has the fastest processor ever found in a phone, coming in at 1GHz. That gives the Toshiba TG01 lots of power, and THAT means that Windows Mobile can run to its full potential. Combine that with a unique, custom interface on top, and the Toshiba TG01 is the best Windows Mobile phone ever made!

Samsung i8910 HD

The Nokia N97 is undoubtedly exciting, and the Toshiba TG01 takes Windows Mobile to new heights. No other phone in the world can do that yet, so the Samsung i8910 HD has to be one of the most exciting phones ever, not just in 2009.

iPhone still has the edge over Palm with its new Pre smartphone

Author: Stig Kristoffersen

PALM PRE versus iPhone – which one to choose?

Palm has launched its new smartphone now, called Palm Pre.

So far only available on Sprint network for a price of USD 199.99 competing with the price of iPhone.

So what are the similarities and what are the differences between these two gadgets?

Palm Pre

Here is the list of Palm Pre capabilities and functionalities.

Layered calendars and linked contacts
Pre uses the Palm® Synergy™ feature to bring your Outlook®, Google, and Facebook® calendars together for one logical view of your day. And if you have the same contacts in different places, Pre can link them together, making it easy to find the information you need.1,2

Activity cards
Keep multiple applications open and move easily between them—email, maps, photos, websites, whatever.3 Pre thinks of your applications as activity cards, and lets you flip through them, move them around, or throw them away off screen.

Intuitive notifications
Things like text messages and calendar appointments appear as notifications at the bottom of the screen. You'll know what's going on without being completely interrupted or losing your train of thought.

Combined messaging
Thanks to Palm Synergy, your conversations with the same person are grouped together in one chat-style view. (Even if it started in IM, for example, and you want to reply with text.) You can also see who's online right from contacts, and start a new conversation with just one touch.1

Universal search4
Simply start typing to begin searching your contacts and applications.4 Pre begins with information on the phone, and then offers to search Google, Google Maps, Wikipedia, or Twitter. With a fast browser at 3G speeds, you'll find what you're looking for in no time.5

Email, Wi-Fi, and GPS
Check Microsoft Exchange email or personal email accounts like Gmail, Hotmail, AOL, and Yahoo!.1,6 Take advantage of Wi-Fi hotspots.1 And look up directions or nearby points of interest using GPS.7 It's everything you need when you're on the go.

Photos, Music, and Videos
Take great pictures with the built-in camera and flash. Watch a video on the vibrant color touchscreen. Buy songs from the Amazon MP3 store1 and listen using the built-in music player. Plus, use the Palm media sync feature to transfer your DRM-free iTunes music, podcasts, photos, and more to your Pre.

Breakthrough design
Slide out the keyboard for faster and easier texting. Close it up and rotate Pre for music, websites, photos, and videos in full widescreen glory. You get the best of both worlds in one beautifully designed phone

Applications
Get applications by browsing the catalog on your Pre, and then download them over the air directly to your phone.1 Apps designed for the Palm webOS™ platform are integrated with other apps on the phone. Buy movie tickets, for example, and you can add the times right to your calendar.8

1 - Third party software may be required at an additional cost. Within wireless coverage area only. Requires data services at additional cost. Third party software, videos and music sold separately. Wi-Fi within range of 802.11b/g Wi-Fi network. Some Wi-Fi hotspots require fee for usage.

2 - Available for Exchange ActiveSync only. Requires Microsoft Outlook using Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2 or later. Within wireless coverage area only. Requires data services at additional cost.

3 - Number of applications and actual performance varies depending on applications used and actions performed.

4 - Searches web and user's applications, contacts, and dialing information. Web search within wireless coverage area only. Requires data services at additional cost.

5 - 3G within HSDPA or EvDO Rev A data coverage area only. Actual speeds vary based on network capacity and application design.

6 - Microsoft Exchange email requires Microsoft Outlook using Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2 or later. Additional fees may apply

7 - Coverage not available in all areas at all times. Requires data services at additional cost. Voice-activated, as-you-go, turn-by-turn directions require third party software at additional cost.

8 - Third party software may be required at an additional cost. Within wireless coverage area only. Requires data services at additional cost. Actual data speeds vary based on network capacity and application design.

So what is the verdict?

Based on this list of functionalities it is clear that Palm Pre is geared towards a different segment of users than the iPhone users.

I beg to see how Palm will take up the competition with iPhone when it comes to the amount of applications available to iPhone and how Apple has made it available to developers through their SDK.

This is one of the main differences, however there are more that differ these two smart phones from each other. The design is of course different and the concept of interacting with the users. Apple has still the edge as they rely on touch completely as Palm still uses keyboard option for the users. Given the development and user ability, it makes the iPhone the winner on this specter as well.

Palm Pre has one advanage over iPhone with its capability to have more than one application active at the same time, as Palm Pre uses available memory and share it between application and notify you when there is not enough memory to seve all applications active. Whether you need this multi tasking option is questionable as you probably will have enough to handle one task at the time when you are on the move anyway. However, for a busy business man it might come in handy as you want to have email and office related applications active simultaneously.

My verdict is still, stick to the iPhone as it offers more versitiliy than the Palm Pre. However it is your choice really.

Control, innovation, power - which is the mobile phone for you?

Author: Matt Sharp

Control, innovation and power. Let's take a look at three phones that best embody those individual characteristics.

Nokia N97

Symbian's always been one of the most popular smartphone OS-es in the mobile world, and the latest, touch-based version carries on that fine tradition, in the form of the Nokia N97. However, it's not just about touchscreens, since the Nokia N97 has also got a full QWERTY keyboard, that will make messaging, live chat and emails a breeze. In terms of what else it can do, the Nokia N97 will also wow you thanks to its 5 MP camera, superb media player (including video playback that's got to be experienced to be believed), a massive 32Gb of memory, and HSDPA web access. Essentially, the Nokia N97 is amongst the best phones in existence, and it's all down to the control it gives you over your mobile experience.

HTC Magic

Let's start this rundown of mobile app stores with one that's already out there in the wild, on a phone that's due to land very soon. We're talking Google Android, with their Android Marketplace, and the phone is the HTC Magic.

The HTC Magic will potentially have the widest range of software available for you to add it, for the simple reason that Android, the Google OS that powers the HTC Magic, is completely open source. In other words, anyone has access to the source code, and can tailor it to fit their software needs. That's going to lead to a massive breadth of software for the HTC Magic, one notable example of which is a barcode scanner, to let you scan products, and find them near to where you are. The HTC Magic is all about innovation...

Toshiba TG01

So, on the Symbian front, you have the Nokia N97, sporting its superb keyboard and massive internal memory.

Samsung - dominating the 8MP phone market

Author: Matt Sharp

Eight megapixels is the new benchmark for a really good camera phone, and Samsung have THREE superb 8MP phones out there. Let's see why they dominate this particular market.

Samsung Pixon - the first one

The first 8MP phone to come from the Korean manufacturer was the gorgeous Samsung Pixon, and it's easy to see why it stood out as something special, right from day one. The simple fact is that the Samsung Pixon wasn't JUST sold on that incredible camera; it also featured a brilliant touchscreen interface. With the gorgeous TouchWiz UI giving you instant control at your fingertips, the Samsung Pixon is truly a joy to use. Plus, as an added benefit for anyone who wants to get a slightly cheaper 8MP phone... because the Samsung Pixon has been on sale that little bit longer, it's also come down in price to make it superb value for money!

Samsung Tocco Ultra - the sexy one

What would happen if you took the awesome camera, and the sumptuous interface of the Pixon, but gave it a slide-out keyboard, and unbelievably, made it thinner than its predecessor? You'd get the gorgeous Samsung Tocco Ultra, one of the prettiest phones Samsung have ever made. It really is quite astounding that, despite being thinner than the Pixon, the Samsung Tocco Ultra manages to squeeze in that beautiful keyboard. If amazing looks (with superb features) are what you seek from a phone, then the Samsung Tocco Ultra is perfect for you.

Samsung i8910 HD - the scarily powerful one

You can see the progression as their phones have evolved, as we move down this list. The Samsung Pixon was the first, and is still a lovely phone. The Samsung Tocco Ultra took the 8MP camera phone into sleek, sexy new territory, where the design was the key. But now, it's time for a phone that exceeds the sex appeal of both, and has real smartphone power: the Samsung i8910 HD.

Nokia N97 - destroying the opposition in 2009?

Author: Matt Sharp

The Nokia N97 is the most powerful phone Nokia have ever made. But will it be the best phone of the year? Let's find out!

Nokia N97 - what makes it so special?

The Nokia N97 shocked a great many people when it was announced at the tail-end of 2008, and the main reason for the excitement it's generated is that it's the second mainstream touchscreen phone Nokia have ever made (the first being, of course, the 5800). The Nokia N97 uses the sleek, intuitive Symbian S60 Touch interface, but it also includes a full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, so that after you've navigated through the cool menus, actually typing that text message or email is going to easier than ever.
Nokia are billing the N97 as a true mobile multimedia computer, a view backed up by the keyboard and incredible interface. However, the Nokia N97 also has its fair share of features to earn that title. You get a 5 megapixel camera for pin-sharp photos and a superb multimedia centre; best of all, though, the Nokia N97 has a massive 32Gb of built in memory, in order for you to actually store all your photos, movies and music. You also get HSDPA internet access, at true broadband speeds, and GPS.

Toshiba TG01 - the biggest screen in the universe

There's little doubt that Windows Mobile is one of the big operating systems in the world. However, to get the best out of it, you really need a phone with a fast processor, a big screen, and a custom user interface on top, not unlike the Sony Ericsson X1 or HTC's range of handset. Well now, there's a new kid in town, called the Toshiba TG01, and it fulfils all three of those criteria. Not only that, but as well as the custom interface, it has the biggest screen of any mobile phone, and the fastest processor, coming in at 4.1 inches, and 1GHz, respectively.
The Toshiba TG01 is quite simply the most powerful Windows Mobile phone out there...

Samsung i8910 HD - 3.7 inch screen and HD video

So, you've got the Nokia N97, with its 3.5 inch screen, and a full, slide-out keyboard. And on the other, there's the Toshiba TG01, with its massive screen, and its key feature (the fastest mobile processor in the world). And then, there's the Samsung i8910 HD... Only time will tell if it can topple the mighty Nokia N97, but the Samsung i8910 HD will undoubtedly be one of the phones of the year.

Which is the best mobile interface of 2009?

Author: Matt Sharp

This year, the way you interact with a phone has become as important as what your phone will do. Let's check out the three most exciting interfaces that are headed our way.

HTC Magic - Google Android

Google Android is one of the big buzzwords in 2009, and its current flagship phone, the HTC Magic, is currently wowing users round the world. Its interface is one of the key reasons for that, with touch friendly controls, and sleek animations between apps. On the front end, though, what sets the HTC Magic apart is that it's based on a set of widgets. With these, you can customise the HTC Magic in any way you want. As well as simply changing the wallpaper, you can also change the icons on screen, and move them anywhere YOU want. The HTC Magic takes customisation to the next level, and makes for one of the nicer interfaces in the mobile industry.

Samsung i8910 HD - Symbian

However, it's not the nicest. With the same ethos of customisable widgets, the TouchWiz interface on the Samsung i8910 HD beats the HTC Magic on a crucial thing: it's much, much better looking. The basic idea is the same with the Samsung i8910 HD, but the front screen looks a lot nicer. A lot of the functionality is similar to the HTC Magic, but with the Samsung i8910 HD's AMOLED screen (which is bigger than the Magic's), it takes the cake as one of the prettiest interfaces out there.

Palm Pre - WebOS

However, they say to save the best till last. The Samsung i8910 HD may have a truly beautiful interface, and the HTC Magic has superb Google Apps integration in its interface, but the Palm Pre is prettier than the i8910 HD, and more functional than the Magic. With WebOS, you do everything on the phone using a range of finger swipes, and gestures, meaning it is the single most fluid mobile interface out there. The Palm Pre also includes synergy between apps which is much tighter than any phone before it, and that's why, in spite of it having the smallest screen on this list, the Palm Pre has the best user experience of any phone in history.

2009 - when the interface is king

Author: Matt Sharp

This year, how you interact with your phone has become as important as the phone's list of features. Let's check out three of the coolest interfaces of the year.

HTC Magic - Google Android

Google Android is one of the big buzzwords of the year, and the newest phone to use it, the HTC Magic, is winning an army of fans round the world. One of the main reasons for that is the interface, with finger friendly controls, and sweeping animations as you move between screens. On the front end, though, what makes the HTC Magic particularly special is that it uses widgets. With these, you can customise the HTC Magic in any way you feel like. Instead of just changing the wallpaper, it'll also let you pick the icons on screen, and position them anywhere YOU want. The HTC Magic takes customisation to the next level, and is easily one of the nicer interfaces in the mobile industry.

Samsung i8910 HD - Symbian

However, it isn't the prettiest. Using the same ethos of movable widgets, the TouchWiz UI on the Samsung i8910 HD has one crucial advantage over the HTC Magic: it's far, far better looking. The basic idea is the same with the Samsung i8910 HD, but the screen you see looks so much sexier. Much of the functionality is akin to the HTC Magic, but as the Samsung i8910 HD has an AMOLED screen (which is bigger than the Magic's), it is easily one of the best looking interfaces out there.

Palm Pre - WebOS

However, the best is yet to come. The Samsung i8910 HD might have a truly beautiful interface, and the HTC Magic has tight Google Apps integration in its interface, but the Palm Pre is prettier than the i8910 HD, and more functional than the Magic. With WebOS, everything on the phone is done by a range of finger sweeps, and gestures, making it the single sleekest mobile interface in the entire world. The Palm Pre also has synergy between apps which is much tighter than any previous phone, and that's why, despite it having the smallest screen on this list, the Palm Pre has the best user experience of all three phones.
