Big screens - the key to a successful phone?

Author: Matt Sharp

These days, a big screen is one of the best ways to ensure success in the mobile world. Let's check out 3 of the biggest screens ever seen on mobile phones.

Nokia N97 - 3.5 inch screen and full QWERTY keyboard

The Nokia N97 takes the Symbian touch interface, and builds it into the body of a true smartphone, with sliding QWERTY keyboard, a larger screen, and a massive 32Gb of built-in memory. There are very few phones on the market that can match it for sheer performance, and... well... the word 'powerhouse' could have almost been made exclusively for the Nokia N97. In addition to the obvious extra benefits you get from a QWERTY keyboard, it also includes a great camera, that comes in at 5 megapixels. Without a doubt, the Nokia N97 is the most advanced Symbian phone in production at the moment.

Toshiba TG01 - 4.1 inch screen and 1GHz processor

The Touch HD once had the biggest screen in the world, but it's been ousted by the Toshiba TG01, with a screen that comes in at an unbelievable 4.1 inches. That huge screen and the ludicrously fast 1GHz processor give Windows a whole new lease of life, removing any of the 'clunkiness' Windows phones of long ago may have had.

In the case of the Toshiba TG01, Windows Mobile is allied to a brand new, 3D interface, with a series of 3 revolving strips that contain all your apps and shortcuts. The animations and actions of the interface are smooth and beautiful, and the Toshiba TG01 proves that as far as operating systems go, Windows Mobile is still one of the hottest properties in the world.

Samsung i8910 HD - 3.7 inch screen and HD video

One the one hand, there's the Nokia N97, with its 3.5 inch screen, and a full, slide-out keyboard. And on the other, there's the Toshiba TG01, with its massive screen, and its key feature (the fastest mobile processor in the world). And then, there's the Samsung i8910 HD, and it has one big advantage over the other two. Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Never before has a phone been able to capture video at that massive high resolution, and coincidentally (or is it coincidence? Maybe not...), the Samsung i8910 HD captures high-def video at the exact quality that Youtube display high-def videos at. It's very possible that the Samsung i8910 HD was designed with its main feature being the ability to get yourself on Youtube, in high-definition. Combine that with the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung i8910 HD deserves to be one of the phones of the year!

Samsung i8910 HD - can it beat its rivals?

Author: Matt Sharp

The Samsung i8910 HD is the latest high-end smartphone from Samsung. But can it cut it against two of its toughest rivals: the Nokia N97 and the HTC Magic? Let's find out.

Interface

The Samsung i8910 HD uses the new Symbian Touch OS, but like any self-respecting phone, it has its own custom interface on top of that: TouchWiz, a finger-friendly, touch-based UI built around widgets, such as weather apps, or contact shortcuts. However, it's not just the Samsung i8910 HD, because the phones in this shootout are built along similar lines. The Nokia N97, in fact, also uses Symbian, making the two phones very similar in terms of underlying OS. However, the Nokia N97 doesn't have the same flair of the Samsung i8910 HD. If we're talking flair, then the HTC Magic is a far more worthy contender, with its Google Android interface. Again, the front end is customisable with widgets, much like the i8910 HD, but with extensions of the home screen on either side, reached by a simple swipe across the HTC Magic's screen. That makes the HTC Magic's interface a lot more expandable, but to counter that, the Samsung i8910 HD interface is far prettier.

Internet and Online Tools

With all three phones using HSDPA, internet is exceptional across them all, and all three have superb web browsers. Both the HTC Magic and the Nokia N97 have aces up their sleeves, though, as they both have dedicated online app stores. The HTC Magic has the Android Marketplace, and the Nokia N97 has its Ovi Store, both of which make downloading extra software incredibly easy. That's not to say that the Samsung i8910 HD won't have extra software available (it is, after all, Symbian-based, and Symbian apps are readily available), but unlike the other two, it's not as easy to get software instantly on the device, no matter where you are. However, the Nokia N97 also wins out in the internet arena by having a full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, something neither the Samsung i8910 HD or HTC Magic have. That's going to make entering web addresses and even things like instant messaging vastly easier.

Camera

As things stand at the moment, the three phones are pretty evenly matched. The Nokia N97 certainly shows more promise in the second category, due to its combination of the Ovi Store AND a full keyboard. The HTC Magic also has the benefit of an app store, and a marginally more expandable and functional interface (although the i8910 HD has the prettier interface). But there's one area where the Samsung i8910 HD comes out as the easy winner: the camera. The HTC Magic makes do with 3 megapixels, and the Nokia N97 tops that by having a 5MP camera. However, the Samsung i8910 HD trumps both, as it not only has an 8MP stills camera, but it's the first phone in the world to be able to record true, 720p HD video. Neither of the other phones can match that. So, we have three very different phones: the HTC Magic with its Android Marketplace; the Nokia N97 with its keyboard; and the Samsung i8910 HD with its phenomenal stills AND video camera. They're aiming for different users, but the truth, all three are utterly brilliant...

Symbian superphones - the next generation has arrived!

Author: Matt Sharp

Symbian's always been one of the most popular smartphone OS-es in the mobile world, and the latest, touch-based version carries on that fine tradition. Let's check the 3 phones that take Symbian to dizzying new highs.

Nokia N97

The first contender comes in the shape of the Nokia N97. However, it's not just about touchscreens, since the Nokia N97 has also got a full QWERTY keyboard, which will make messaging, live chat and emails a breeze. In terms of what else it can do, the Nokia N97 will also wow you thanks to its 5 MP camera, superb media player (including video playback that's got to to be experienced to be believed), a massive 32Gb of memory, and HSDPA web access. Essentially, the Nokia N97 is amongst the best phones in existence.

Samsung i8910 HD

However, if video is more your thing, another phone trumps the N97: the Samsung i8910 HD. The HD on the end of the name isn't just there for show, it signifies that the Samsung i8910 HD is the first phone in history that can record 720p HD-Video. Conveniently, that's the same definition Youtube shows its high-def videos at, so is it possible that the Samsung i8910 HD is actually the perfect HD Youtube phone?

Sony Ericsson Idou

While the Nokia N97, with its slide out keyboard, and the Samsung i8910 HD, with the best video recording ever, use Version 5 of the Symbian OS... the Sony Ericsson Idou is the first ever handset to use Version 5.1, and boy does it show. Fuse that together with a sleek, touch-friendly front-end, and it add up to the Sony Ericsson Idou being, very probably, the slickest Symbian phone yet produced. That's not its big killer feature, however, since THAT comes in the form of the Sony Ericsson Idou's camera, which weighs in at a mind-boggling 12 megapixels. Because of its huge camera and the amazing interface, as well as media playback and social networking better than we've yet seen on a phone, the Sony Ericsson Idou has to be one of the coolest phones ever to be produced!

OS Showdown - Symbian vs Windows Mobile vs Google Android

Author: Matt Sharp

The 3 big operating systems in the world of smartphones are always trying to outdo each other. Let's see what each OS's 'ultimate' phone is like.

Sony Ericsson Idou

Symbian Touch evolves in the Sony Ericsson Idou. There's a reason for that statement: the Sony Ericsson Idou is the first ever handset to use Version 5.1 of the Symbian OS, and boy does it show.

HTC Magic

Android is trying to take over the world, and its new home is the beautiful HTC Magic. It has all the good stuff that made the first Android phone (the G1) good, but puts it all in a touchscreen-only body, which is both sleek and sexy. Since the keyboard has been removed, the HTC Magic also has a full, onscreen keyboard, a first for any Android phone, lining it up as a direct rival to the iPhone. You also get the Android Marketplace, which lets you download and install third party apps to your HTC Magic, and it ends up creating a smartphone that really can morph into whatever you want it to be. It really is a kind of magic; it's the HTC Magic.

Toshiba TG01

So, on the Symbian front, you have the Sony Ericsson Idou, wowing us with that enormous camera. In terms of Android, there's the HTC Magic, with the superb Android Marketplace. But Windows Mobile goes down a different route. You see, Windows Mobile needs two things to run at its best: a powerful processor and a big display. Well, say hello to the Toshiba TG01, the phone with the fastest processor AND the biggest display in the history of phones! Weighing in at 1GHz and 4.1 inches respectively, those specs mean that the Toshiba TG01 will run Windows Mobile more smoothly than any other phone in existence; as well as that with that immense screen, the Toshiba TG01 makes drilling down into menus, and actually getting into the internals of Windows, so much easier. If power is your thing (and lets be honest, who doesn't want a powerful phone?), then the Toshiba TG01 is the phone for you!

Meet the Nokia N97 and its smartphone rivals

Author: Matt Sharp

The Nokia N97 promises to be a barnstorming mobile phone. But it won't have the market it all to itself. Let's take a look at it, and at the 2 phones that could beat it.

Nokia N97 - the basics

After the triumphant launch of the Nokia 5800, which was only ever meant to be a mid-range phone, Nokia needed a new top-ender to really wow the public. And that top-ender is the hyper-powered Nokia N97. It takes the brand new Symbian Touch interface, and adds in bags more power, as well as a full QWERTY keyboard. Even starting with the looks, it's a truly stunning phone, with sleek surfaces and a minimalist design making the Nokia N97 truly a beautiful sight to behold.

However, the impressive nature of the Nokia N97 doesn't end with the exterior, as it's what's inside that really impresses. Equipped with a 5 megapixel camera, it effortlessly switches from phone to camera, letting you leave your separate camera at home. And, of course, with HSDPA data speeds, and WiFi, the Nokia N97 even morphs into a miniature laptop when you need it to. It's quite simply an astounding phone.

Palm Pre - the user friendly choice

However, there's a new kind on the block, that aims to take the smartphone crown all for itself. The Nokia N97 goes for raw power, but what the new Palm Pre goes for is sheer elegance. Using the brand new, never-before-seen WebOS at its core, the Palm Pre takes touch-friendly interfaces and innovative design to an entirely new level. Take, for example, the new Fandango app that should be available when the Palm Pre is launched. It's an online cinema booking service, that lets you buy tickets and watch trailers on the phone.

But even the Nokia N97 will most likely be able to do that. The Palm Pre, however, will also put an automatic reminder in your calendar, and contact people who are going with you, to organise getting there. It's that kind of integration, and interplay between apps that makes the Palm Pre the real candidate for best in breed.

Sony Ericsson Idou - throwing the best camera into the mix

The Nokia N97 may have 5 megapixels, while the Palm Pre can only muster 3MP, but the magnificent Sony Ericsson Idou has a massive 12 megapixel camera. Whilst the number of megapixels isn't the ONLY concern in a camera phone, there's no denying that the extra 4 million pixels the Sony Ericsson Idou has IS going to make a difference. However, even here, it's not just about megapixels here, as the Sony Ericsson Idou is also loaded with Cyber-Shot technology such as autofocus, smile detection, and a wealth of other options for improving your photos; so the Sony Ericsson Idou is really the most advanced camera phone here. It's a good job the Nokia N97 is due out first, because the other phones on this list seems to be more than a match for it!

Toshiba TG01 - can this Windows Mobile beast beat its rivals?

Author: Matt Sharp

Windows Mobile has evolved in leaps and bounds since its earlier, not-so-user-friendly incarnations in the past. Let's take a look at an upcoming phone that will set the WinMo world alight, and see what competition it faces.

Toshiba TG01 - the basics

Windows Mobile haven't been resting on their laurels, and the new fruit of their labours is the ultra-powerful Toshiba TG01. Not only does it have the biggest screen ever seen on a mobile phone, measuring in at 4.1 inches, but the Toshiba TG01 also has the most powerful processor put into a mobile phone. Dubbed Snapdragon, the 1GHz processor gives the Toshiba TG01 power, and lots of it, and since that's what's needed to let Windows Mobile live up to its full potential, the Toshiba TG01 is arguably the best WinMo phone that's ever been announced.

One thing's for sure, though, the Toshiba TG01 is definitely the most powerful.

HTC Magic - the open source challenger

What does the HTC Magic bring to the party, that will allow it to compete on a level playing field, and give it an edge. The answer can be summed up in one word: Android. It's Google's Android OS that gives the HTC Magic its undeniable power. Make no mistake, Android is right on the cutting edge of interfaces, by being completely open source, letting anyone and everyone code software for it. Quite literally, if someone can dream up an app for the HTC Magic, then you can get it, whether it be a version of Pacman, or a barcode reader, that can scan products barcodes, then find you the best deal, either on the internet, or using GPS to find the nearest shop to you that sells what you're after.

It's things like that which make the HTC Magic so compelling, and along with the tightest integration with Google's whole suite of apps, maps and email clients, it makes the HTC Magic a true force to be reckoned with.

Sony Ericsson Idou - the Symbian challenger

However, the fight isn't over yet, because the Sony Ericsson Idou is out to steal its crown. This features Symbian S60 Touch, although the design is still reminiscent of both the HTC Magic and the Toshiba TG01, as it lacks a keyboard. That's not going to be an issue, though, because the interface on the Sony Ericsson Idou, a custom design by Sony Ericsson, is one of the nicest, most finger-friendly UIs in a long time. It really is hard to decide which of these three phones is the best, but there's one factor that may swing it; there's one hardware feature that the Sony Ericsson Idou outdoes both phones on. It's the first phone announced for the UK to come with an immense twelve megapixel camera, and as such, it may well be, not just the camera phone of the year, but the best camera phone in the history of mobile phones. Whether it will be as a good an all-round smartphone as the Toshiba TG01, though, remains to be seen...

The HTC Magic - what sets it apart from its competitors?

Author: Matt Sharp

Recently released in the UK, the HTC Magic is the next vehicle for the Google Android OS... but how well does it stack up against its rivals? How long can it reign supreme before something knocks it off its perch?

HTC Magic - the basics

The first important fact about the HTC Magic, and the bit that has made it so talked about, is its operating system: Google Android. As it's only the second phone to officially go on sale using Android, the HTC Magic has garnered an awful lot of trade and consumer interest. Even more importantly, the HTC Magic is the first Android phone to feature a keyboard-less, touchscreen-only design, a thing that seems to be all the rage in 2009. It's certainly more of a looker than its predecessor, the G1, and that fusion of enhanced looks and the still-awesome power of Android makes the HTC Magic a very compelling phone indeed.

Nokia N97 - Symbian the true challenger to Android?

However, Android isn't the only touch-based operating system out there, and Symbian is one of the heavyweights in the mobile world. That's sure to give the Nokia N97, the next phone with Symbian Touch, some serious clout when it arrives. The Nokia N97, to be frank, easily outdoes the HTC Magic in terms of hardware features, with a 5 megapixel camera, and 32Gb of memory built in; simply, the Nokia N97 dwarfs the 3MP and memory-card-only storage of the HTC Magic. The big thing, though, that will settle this debate is the interface, and in that arena, the Nokia N97 isn't such a b contender. It uses Symbian Touch, but not the fully open source version that's coming later in the year, and it remains to be seen how good the Ovi Store will be on the Nokia N97. Given how good the Android Marketplace, with its selection of downloadable apps is, it's going to be difficult for the Nokia N97 to top it.

Palm Pre - war of the interfaces

If the interface on the Nokia N97 can't beat the Android powered HTC Magic, what can? Well, there's one phone whose interface tops everything on the market today: the Palm Pre. It features the slickest interface ever witnessed on a phone, with sleek transitions and touch controls, not to mention the tightest integration between apps that's ever been experienced. The WebOS interface that powers the Palm Pre really is a thing of beauty, and as its hardware specs are at least on a par with the HTC Magic, it seems a foregone conclusion that it's going to be the winner in this fight, yes? Well, that depends. The Palm Pre is very much a make or break product for Palm, and if things don't quite go according to plan, they maybe in some insurmountable financial trouble. Add in to that the fact that there's no news yet of a UK release for the Palm Pre (with some commentators starting to get the feeling if it doesn't perform well in the USA, the Palm Pre will never get released in the UK), and it means that as things stand at the moment, the future for the Palm Pre just isn't looking as rosy as the HTC Magic...

Symbian phones - the good, the better and the mind-blowing

Author: Matt Sharp

Symbian's been around for many years, but in 2009, it's evolving. Let's take a look at the mind-blowing phones all set to usher in a new age for Symbian.

Nokia N97 - fusing Symbian with QWERTY

It should beat the other two to market, so it's the first on this list: it's the Nokia N97, a true mobile multimedia computer. It's also the only phone in this article to feature a full QWERTY keyboard, which is sure to make the Nokia N97 the natural choice for those who live to text, or email. Not only that, but the Nokia N97 includes one of the best multimedia playback engines ever seen on a mobile phone, and with a massive 32Gb of internal memory, you're going to be able to get a LOT of stuff on it. Combine that with a 5 megapixel camera, and it makes the Nokia N97 a very solid purchase.

Samsung Omnia HD - Symbian meets true HD Video

However, if video is more your thing, another phone trumps the N97: the Samsung Omnia HD. The HD on the end of the name isn't just there for show, it signifies that the Samsung Omnia HD is the first phone in history that can record 720p HD-Video. Conveniently, that's the same definition Youtube shows its high-def videos at, so is it possible that the Samsung Omnia HD is actually the perfect HD Youtube phone?

Sony Ericsson Idou - the best Symbian camera phone in history

With the Nokia N97, you get that QWERTY keyboard, and if video is more your thing, there's the Samsung Omnia HD; but what if your tastes run more to still images. Then you need the Sony Ericsson Idou, the UK's first (unless someone beats them to it) 12 megapixel camera phone. Like the other phones in this rundown, it uses Symbian Touch, but with the Sony Ericsson Idou, you'll find a custom SE interface on, that's both slick and intuitive. And then, of course, there's that camera; at 12 megapixels, with Cyber-Shot technology, the Sony Ericsson Idou will give even standalone cameras a run for their money. Put simply, the Sony Ericsson Idou, at the time of writing, is the best camera phone the world's ever seen!

Samsung - how to dominate the 8MP phone market

Author: Matt Sharp

Many manufactures have raised their top-end camera phone spec up to 8 megapixels, but Samsung have gone for gold, and have THREE 8MP phones either on the market, or on the way. Let's see these 8MP monster in action.

In the beginning - Samsung Pixon

If you want to see where it all began, you need to turn to one of their first 8 megapixel phones, the Samsung Pixon. Designed to take on its closest rival, the LG Renoir, the Samsung Pixon combines a superb 8 megapixel sensor, with a ton of photo-enhancing software (such as face detection) AND a beautiful, intuitive touchscreen interface. The Samsung Pixon really was the phone that set the ball rolling, and without it, we wouldn't have the other two world-beaters on this list...

Glamour model - Samsung Tocco Ultra

What happens if you take the TouchWiz interface from the Samsung Pixon, and the stunning 8MP camera, but give it a slide-out keypad, and make the whole thing really slim? Simple, you get the gorgeous Samsung Tocco Ultra!

The Samsung Tocco Ultra is really a wonder of engineering. To take everything that made the Pixon great, and add a keypad is good enough, but considering how slim the Samsung Tocco Ultra is (at only 12.7mm), it's quite amazing they managed to fit everything in. Basically, if you want an 8MP camera phone, but want to look your best using it, the Samsung Tocco Ultra is the phone to get.

The next evolution - Samsung Omnia HD

So, we come to the final phone on this journey, that began with the Samsung Pixon. It introduced touchscreens to the world of 8MP Samsung phones, and with the Samsung Tocco Ultra, the whole package got slimmer and sexier. So, now we've got slim and sexy let's see a phone that's slim, sexy, AND incredibly powerful: the Samsung Omnia HD. It takes the crown of most powerful on this list for two reasons. First, the Samsung Omnia HD is built on Symbian, so whilst the interface will be familiar (the top shell is TouchWiz again), the phone gets a massive power boost over its siblings, giving it real smartphone credentials. The other factor that makes the Samsung Omnia HD so spectacular is video. Not only does it take still images at 8 megapixels, but the Samsung Omnia HD will also record video in true, 720p resolution, high-definition video. No other phone in the world can do that yet, so the Samsung Omnia HD must surely be the best 8MP phone in existence!

Mobile video - the way of the future?

Author: Matt Sharp

Still cameras on phones are all well and good, but what if you want to capture the moving image? What phones are the ultimate mobile video phones?

Sony Ericsson Idou - 12MP, but how's the video?

The interface in the Sony Ericsson Idou is what will evolve into the Symbian Foundation software (effectively, it's Symbian S60 Touch), with a custom Sony Ericsson interface on top. And what an interface it is, with smooth, fluid finger controls, and instant access to your media and important apps. However, it's the video in the Sony Ericsson Idou that we're concerned about here, and it will record awesome vids, as it's also the first 12 megapixel phone to be announced in Europe. In essence, the Sony Ericsson Idou combines a truly sumptuous operating system, with a truly magnificent camera, and a great big screen... and if that isn't enough to make it the one of the video phones of the year, I don't know what is!

Toshiba TG01 - the biggest screen in the universe

There's little doubt that Windows Mobile is one of the big operating systems in the world. However, to get the best out of it, you really need a phone with a fast processor, a big screen, and a custom user interface on top, not unlike the Sony Ericsson X1 or HTC's range of handset. Well now, there's a new kid in town, called the Toshiba TG01, and it fulfils all three of those criteria. Not only that, but as well as the custom interface, it has the biggest screen of any mobile phone, and the fastest processor, coming in at 4.1 inches, and 1GHz, respectively.

The Toshiba TG01 is quite simply the most powerful Windows Mobile phone out there, and as well as that, it also features Toshiba's patented screen driver technology, from their range of big-screen TVs. Ok, the camera may only be 3 megapixels and that means that the video it records won't be a patch on the other two phones in this list, but the Toshiba TG01 easily scores lots of point having the biggest, and highest resolution, screen here...

Samsung Omnia HD - true HD video

So, there's the Sony Ericsson Idou on the one hand, a phone more optimised towards still photos. And on the other, there's the Toshiba TG01, with its massive screen, designed more for watching video, than capturing it. And then, there's the Samsung Omnia HD, and it has one big advantage over the other two. Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung Omnia HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Never before has a phone been able to capture video at that massive high resolution, and coincidentally (or is it coincidence? Maybe not...), the Samsung Omnia HD captures high-def video at the exact quality that Youtube display high-def videos at. It's very possible that the Samsung Omnia HD was designed with its main feature being the ability to get yourself on Youtube, in high-definition. Combine that with the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung Omnia HD deserves to be one of the phones of the year!

Three phones that show why QWERTY keyboards rule

Author: Matt Sharp

For messaging and mobile email, nothing beats a phone with a QWERTY keyboard. Let's check out 3 of the newest and coolest, each of which adds something individual to the mix.

HTC Snap - Windows + QWERTY

Windows Mobile has always been acknowledged as one of the premier operating systems out there, and in the HTC Snap, it's allied to a brilliantly ergonomic QWERTY keyboard. That's going to be incredibly useful for writing emails, which is good, since the HTC Snap is very definitely an email-focused phone. Because of that, the HTC Snap also features a new technology called Inner Circle. This is designed to make managing the inbox on your HTC Snap, by automatically sorting email priorities so you always see the important people's emails first, and the HTC Snap filters out the stuffyou don't need at that moment. Put simply, with Inner Circle, and that QWERTY keyboard, the HTC Snap may be the best WinMo-based email phone out there.

Nokia N97 - Symbian + QWERTY

Over in Finland, however, the QWERTY keyboard has arrived in the shape of the Nokia N97. Its unique feature is that the Nokia N97 is the only side-sliding keyboard on this rundown. Not only that, but as the QWERTY keyboard slides open, it also flips the screen up, putting the Nokia N97's screen at the perfect angle to view while you type. Allied to the power of Symbian, that makes the Nokia N97 into a true multimedia computer, that can go anywhere with you.

Palm Pre - WebOS + QWERTY

So, the HTC Snap is the QWERTY email master in this list. And the Nokia N97 is the only one with a landscape QWERTY keyboard. What does the Palm Pre offer that's different? Well, one could talk about the WebOS interface it uses, as it's unique in the annals of phone history. And indeed, there's one feature of WebOS, directly related to the keyboard, that makes the Palm Pre so cool. Universal search. Now, many phones do that, but the Palm Pre does it so much more cleverly. Just start typing what you want to know about, from the front screen, and the Palm Pre will search your contacts, apps, music, pictures, and even the internet, to interpret and find what you're looking for. That really is a cool feature, and it may well make the Palm Pre the coolest QWERTY phone out there.
