Symbian, Windows and WebOS fight it out in 2009

Author: Matt Sharp

Let's take a look at 3 of the most exciting phones to arrive in the year 2009, smartphones that really show off what power their respective operating systems are capable of...

Nokia N97 - Symbian

After the triumphant launch of the Nokia 5800, which was only ever meant to be a mid-range phone, Nokia needed a new top-ender to really wow the public. And that top-ender is the hyper-powered Nokia N97. It takes the brand new Symbian Touch interface, and adds in bags more power, as well as a full QWERTY keyboard.

The impressive nature of the Nokia N97 doesn't end with the exterior, as it's what's inside that really impresses. Equipped with a 5 megapixel camera, it effortlessly switches from phone to camera, letting you leave your separate camera at home. And then, of course, there's the media player, and with a massive 32Gb of integrated memory, the Nokia N97 lets you leave your mp3 player at home. And, of course, with HSDPA data speeds, and WiFi, the Nokia N97 even morphs into a miniature laptop when you need it to.

Toshiba TG01 - Windows Mobile

Windows Mobile phones have had a tendency, in the past, to be a bit clunky. The interface wasn't the best, and that ruined all that power they had. But now, we have to face facts; the Toshiba TG01, the most powerful mobile phone EVER made. That's not an exaggeration, the Toshiba TG01 is the first phone in history to have a 1GHz processor, taking its performance way beyond any mobile phones before, into laptop territory. Combine that with a unique 3D interface on top, and at 4.1 inches, the biggest screen of any mobile phone, and the Toshiba TG01 is all set to take its rightful place as the most powerful and best Windows phone that's ever been released.

Palm Pre - WebOS

However, there's a new kind on the block, that aims to take the smartphone crown all for itself. The Nokia N97 and the Toshiba TG01 both go for raw power, but what the new Palm Pre goes for is sheer elegance. Using the brand new, never-before-seen WebOS at its core, the Palm Pre takes touch-friendly interfaces and innovative design to an entirely new level. Take, for example, the new Fandango app that should be available when the Palm Pre is launched. It's an online cinema booking service, that lets you buy tickets and watch trailers on the phone. But even the Nokia N97 will most likely be able to do that. The Palm Pre, however, will also put an automatic reminder in your calendar, and contact people who are going with you, to organise getting there. It's that kind of integration, and interplay between apps that makes the Palm Pre the real candidate for best in breed.

Get Your News Faster and Help the Planet With a Wireless Reading Device

Author: Ann Thyne

The day just does not start until you get your paper in your hands and digest the daily news of the day. However, we don't always have the time to pick up the paper and it would be nice if there was a way to get a copy of it that we didn't have to worry about leaving behind on our seat. The answer is here and it is in the form of a wireless reading device.

These are great new gadgets that will allow you to have various morning newspapers, magazines and books at the tip of your fingers whenever you want them. It takes the painful process of going to bookstores and waiting in lines out of the equation. Finding your favorite reading material has never been easier.

With these devices, you can download books in under a minute and have your favorite newspapers and magazines ready for you to read whenever you want. No more going to the store for a book or waiting for your newspaper delivery!

While having your reading at your fingertips is great, a wireless reading device has another great aspect and that is that it eliminates a lot of the paper you probably have laying around. Not only is this great for keeping your life less messy, it's also good for the environment as less paper is used!

The latest device to hit the market is the The Kindle. Amazon has introduced it to the world and it is flying off the shelves. With a $399 price tag, high expectations are abundant. The device is loaded with features and features monthly plans for both magazines and newspapers alike. You can also purchase books from them directly for $9.99 which is actually a pretty good deal since buying them at the store often costs more than that.

One of the earlier devices that started this craze was the RCA REB 1100. You may not be able to find it is stores right now, but there are plenty of them available in used condition. It is a great alternative if you just want to check out this gadgetry. You can usually find them for under $100.

One device that is sure to give the Kindle a run for its money is the Hanlin eReader V8. It is $100 cheaper than the Kindle, but still a pretty significant investment. However, it is also loaded with featured and normal battery life will allow you to enjoy about 300 pages or reading time. It is only a matter of time before the newsstand as we know it is extinct.

Now, if you are worried about these reading devices working in the sun or the glare from the screen, worry not. These devices use a new technology and the screen actually looks like paper. There is no glare like that which you would get from a computer screen. This makes for easy reading at home, in the car or even while sitting in the park on a sunny day.

LG KM900 Arena Mobile Phone Review - Go 3D With Your Interactive Mobile Experience

Author: Carlson Osbourne

LG is one of the most forward thinking mobile phone manufacturers on the market today. Never a company to stand in the background, they have always been prepared to take chances in order to design the biggest and best mobile phone out there year after year. Rumour has it that they have done it again with this year's offering of the LG KM900 Arena. Touted as the successor of the LG Viewty, this handset has a lot to live up to but does it hit the mark?

Before we look at whether the big selling point, the 3D interface, lives up to the hype, we should take a look at the outer package. The LG KM900 Arena is a very slick and sophisticated phone. With clean lines, a slim line design and a fabulous colour scheme, it is most definitely attractive to both the business and personal sides of the spectrum. It actually has a silver titanium case, complete with a black frame to highlight the sheer beauty of the screen. Measuring a huge 3 inches with a resolution of 480x800 pixels, it truly is amazing and you will be blown away by the quality.

In terms of the feature list, the LG KM900 Arena seems to have every base covered. With a built in memory of 8GB, there is more than enough room for everything you want to store there. You can even supplement that further with a MicroSD card if you like. The touch screen is incredibly responsive and easy to use, the connectivity options are excellent and the Wi-Fi connection is far more reliable than you might find on most other handsets. The reliability of the handset in general is excellent, but you might want to know a little about the features.

The LG KM900 Arena has a music player and a camera. The music player supports most file formats and has some absolutely wonderful touches. For example, the 3.5mm jack is located on the top of the phone so that you can enjoy the fabulous music quality without snagging your headphones on your pocket all the time. The Dolby Mobile is responsible for the excellent sound quality but you can share your tunes via the FM transmitter as well. The camera, on the other hand, is not as powerful as some may expect from an LG phone. However, at 5MP it still takes excellent images and comes complete with LED Flash, auto focus and face tracking, amongst other features. As such, it is highly functional and perfect for the user that loves to take pictures as and when the mood takes them.

However, the LG KM900 Arena does have one major fault after the excellence of all of the above and unfortunately it happens to be the main selling point that LG have chosen to focus on - the 3D interface. Logic tells us that 3D imagery on a flat screen is impossible but wishful thinking seems to have convinced LG otherwise. This is not the mobile phone version of HD so do not get too excited because you will be sorely disappointed if you do.

Providing that you do not buy into the 3D hype, you will be highly satisfied with the LG KM900 Arena. It is a fantastic handset that really does push the bar. LG is really establishing a reputation for bigger and better phones and the LG KM900 Arena fits into that perfectly!

Symbian phones - three of the best ever

Author: Matt Sharp

The Sony Ericsson Idou, arguably the most powerful Symbian phone ever, has been given a release date; it's due in October. But it's not the only Symbian super-phone out this year. Let's check out the competition...

Sony Ericsson Idou - Symbian and 12 megapixels

The Sony Ericsson Idou is quite possibly the most talked about phone of the year. Of course, the main reason for that is the 12 megapixel camera, but while that is awesome, there's lots more to the Sony Ericsson Idou. It's the first 'Entertainment Unlimited' phone, so it combines ace camera and Walkman music. Also, the Sony Ericsson Idou will focus on social networking, games and superb video services to become your mobile entertainment portal. However, the Sony Ericsson Idou also uses Symbian, so it has real smartphone power, which will most likely include its own app store.

However, October's a long way away. Let's see what competition the Sony Ericsson Idou will be up against.

Samsung Omnia HD - Symbian and HD video

The Idou might be the king of still photos (for the time being), but the Samsung Omnia HD has to be the king of mobile video. Why? The Samsung Omnia HD is the first phone ever to record true, 720p resolution, HD video. And since it has HSDPA and high speed uploads, you've got the formula for one superb high-def Youtube phone, with the Samsung Omnia HD.

Whether that will be enough to beat the ace camera that makes the Idou so compelling (since both phones use Symbian) is unknown, but the Samsung Omnia HD can certainly hold its own.

Nokia N97 - Symbian and QWERTY

So, since the Samsung Omnia HD can't topple the Idou, we turn to Finland's entry. It hasn't got HD video recording, but the Nokia N97 does have Symbian, so it goes toe-to-toe with the Sony Ericsson Idou. The Nokia N97 has got the power to match its rival, and as well as that, it's got a full QWERTY keyboard, plus 32Gb of memory, and the Sony Ericsson Idou doesn't have either of those. In the end, the three phones aren't that badly matched, though, and it will be what features you want, that decides which you'd prefer. For video, it's the Samsung Omnia HD. For the heavier messaging types, and people who want a full keyboard, the Nokia N97 is the obvious choice. But if you prefer a massive camera, and all your entertainment needs met in one phone, then the clear choice has to be the Sony Ericsson Idou.

App Stores - Changing The Way We Look At Mobile Phones

Author: Matt Sharp

It's not enough for smartphones to be full of features these days; you have to be able to add extra software onto them for extra 'phone coolness'. Let's take a look at the world of mobile app stores, and see how they're changing the way we think about phones.

HTC Magic - Open Source with Android

Let's start this rundown of mobile app stores with one that's already out there in the wild, on a phone that's due to land very soon. We're talking Google Android, with their Android Marketplace, and the phone is the HTC Magic.

The HTC Magic will potentially have the widest range of software available for you to add it, for the simple reason that Android, the Google OS that powers the HTC Magic, is completely open source. In other words, anyone has access to the source code, and can tailor it to fit their software needs. That's going to lead to a massive breadth of software for the HTC Magic, some notable examples of which are a barcode scanner, to let you scan products, and find them near to where you are; and a real world info service, that uses imaging from the camera and GPS to put up real time info on the screen of the HTC Magic, about whatever you're pointing the cam at. Not, that's clever!

Toshiba TG01 - making Windows even easier to customise

Next, we move on to an operating system that you've been able to download extra software for, for YEARS: Windows Mobile. However this year, Windows Mobile (showcased best in the stunning Toshiba TG01) will be getting its own dedicated app store, run by Microsoft themselves. In fairness, this will probably not be vastly different to the range of software download stores already out there, but crucially, you'll be able to download software directly onto your Toshiba TG01, which is a new touch on the old formula.

The Toshiba TG01 is going to be one of the best phones for running third party software, too, as it has both the fastest processor and biggest screen of any mobile phones on sale. So, if you're after the power of Windows Mobile, and extra software that will run like a dream, the Toshiba TG01 is the phone for you.

Palm Pre - the easiest phone ever to make software for?

Finally, we come to a brand new phone, with a brand new operating system: the much-anticipated Palm Pre, which shows a different approach again to third-party software. Where the HTC Magic goes for open source and a vast breadth of software, and where the Toshiba TG01 goes for sheer power combined with Windows Mobile, the Palm Pre aims to have two factors above all else: intuitive handling, and incredible, tight integration between different apps on the phone. Take, for example, a Palm Pre app that looks up movie showtimes: it can find out, using your phone's GPS, where your nearest cinema is, book tickets online for you, and then instantly put a note in your calendar to say you're busy going to the cinema. Add to that the simple fact that the Palm Pre is probably the easiest smartphone to create software for (using simple web techniques like html code), and you can only come to one conclusion: the Palm Pre may well be the best 'downloadable app' phone of them all!

Three way showdown - Android vs Windows vs Symbian

Author: Matt Sharp

They're the big three operating systems in the world of smartphones, but which is best? To find out, let's check out the three most exciting smartphones of 2009.

HTC Magic - Google Android

The HTC Magic is comparable to the iPhone, sharing a similar keyboard-less design. Again, it's with the software that the HTC Magic shines, with Android living up to the title some have given it, that of 'game changer'. Its completely open source nature makes adapting the OS very easy, and the interface itself is once again a finger-friendly, sleek, and polished affair, with gesture controls the order of the day. The tight integration of the full Google suite (including Apps and Gmail), makes it a real force to be reckoned with, and it has to be said that the HTC Magic is a truly stunning phone.

Toshiba TG01 - Windows Mobile

While Google Android is bringing open source touch-based power to the party, rivals Windows Mobile haven't been resting on their laurels, and the new fruit of their labours is the ultra-powerful Toshiba TG01. Not only does it have the biggest screen ever seen on a mobile phone, measuring in at 4.1 inches, but the Toshiba TG01 also has the most powerful processor put into a mobile phone.

Called Snapdragon, the 1GHz, dual-core processor gives the Toshiba TG01 sheer grunt, which is what it needs to let Windows Mobile live up to its full potential, the Toshiba TG01 is arguably the best WinMo phone that's ever been announced.

Sony Ericsson Idou - Symbian

However, the Toshiba TG01 may not be the overall phone of the year, because the Sony Ericsson Idou is out to steal its crown. This features Symbian S60 Touch, and the design is more reminiscent of the HTC Magic, as it lacks a keyboard. That's not going to be an issue, though, because the interface on the Sony Ericsson Idou, a custom design by Sony Ericsson, is one of the nicest, most finger-friendly UIs in a long time. Oh, and of course, there's one hardware feature that the Sony Ericsson Idou outdoes both phones on. It's the first phone announced for the UK to come with an immense twelve megapixel camera, and as such, it may well be, not just the camera phone of the year, but the best camera phone in the history of mobile phones.

Symbian S60 Touch - three phones that will change the world

Author: Matt Sharp

Symbian S60 Touch is a relatively new phone OS, but even now, it's taking the world by storm. Let's check out three phones that show just WHY that's the case...

Nokia 5800 - the first Symbian S60 Touch phone

It's not been on the market long, but the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is making a name for itself as a superstar, already, after starring in the last Batman film, and the new Britney Spears video (in which it was the best thing). As if that wasn't good enough, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is also one of the most exciting mobile phones to come from the Finnish manufacturer for quite a while!

Key to that is the fact that the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is the first mainstream touchscreen mobile phone Nokia have ever made. They've made others before, but this one is the first one to really catch the public's eye, possibly because it's the first touchscreen mobile phone Nokia have brought to the UK market that isn't rubbish. In fact, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is about as far from 'rubbish' as it's possible to be, with a stunning, sleek new interface, massive touchscreen, 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA and GPS.

Nokia N97 - multimedia computer, or phone?

Meanwhile, the Nokia N97 takes the Symbian touch interface, and builds it into the body of a true smartphone, with sliding QWERTY keyboard, a larger screen, and a massive 32Gb of built-in memory. There are very few phones on the market that can match it for sheer performance, and... well... the word 'powerhouse' could have almost been made exclusively for the Nokia N97. In addition to the obvious extra benefits you get from a QWERTY keyboard, it also includes a bigger camera than its predecessor, the Nokia 5800, coming in at 5 megapixels. Without a doubt, the Nokia N97 is the most advanced Symbian phone in production at the moment.

It won't stay that way, though, because another upcoming phone is definitely going to steal its thunder...

Sony Ericsson Idou - the ultimate touchscreen phone

As things stand at the moment, the Nokia N97 is the most advanced Symbian phone you'll be able to lay your hands on, beating out its lower-end cousin, the Nokia 5800. However, it WILL be superseded, and it will lose its crown, because at the recent Mobile World Congress, a new phone from Sony Ericsson was announced. And it's a beast! Called the Sony Ericsson Idou, it features the same Symbian touch software, but with an added interface on top, that's sexier than anything seen before. Smooth, fluid animations are the order of the day, and the music player, derived from Walkman technology, beats everything else out there. However, it has one, huge, not-so-secret weapon, because the Sony Ericsson Idou is the first phone to feature a TWELVE megapixel camera. Because of that, and because of the superb interface, there's simply nothing out there that can touch (no pun intended) the Idou...

Top-end interfaces aren't just for smartphones..

Author: Matt Sharp

Smartphones have really taken innovative interfaces to heart, with how you interact with your phone being the new way many people choose their phones. But top-end interfaces aren't JUST for smartphones. Let's check out two phones that show that off better than any other...

LG Arena - unleashing S-Class on the world

LG have raised the bar for mobile phones several times, with phones like the Viewty, and they've done it again with the brilliant LG Arena. There's an obvious reason for that: its interface. That's because the LG Arena is the first handset by the Korean manufacturer to feature their new S-Class interface, which shows you everything as icons on a 3D cube, that you spin around using your fingertips. It's a superb interface, and it means the LG Arena really is a phone you'll want to touch and play with. Give it a 5 megapixel camera, and an awesome media player, and you get one of the greatest multimedia handsets in the industry, with the LG Arena.

Samsung Tocco Ultra - TouchWiz + keyboard = win!

However, the Samsung Tocco Ultra has one of the nicest touchscreen interfaces of any non-smartphone. Based on their TouchWiz UI (which has previously seen the light of day in phones like the original Tocco), the Samsung Tocco Ultra puts that interface into a body that's clearly been inspired by their Ultra Edition series of slim, sexy phones. Even the name Samsung Tocco Ultra hints at that dual heritage, with the phone being designed to look good both inside and out.
However, good looks aren't the only thing the Tocco Ultra is trading on some cool features, too that, to be honest, top those on the LG Arena. Quite apart form the sleek, finger-friendly interface, it's also equipped with a beautiful 8 megapixel camera (much like the Samsung Pixon that it will be sold alongside), and HSDPA internet access. As well as that, though, the Samsung Tocco Ultra adds a whole level of usability, but having a proper, slide-out keyboard. In other words, anyone who wants a touch interface, but prefers texting, or dialling numbers, on an old school keypad, is going to right at home with the Tocco Ultra.

Interfaces - the new battleground for mobile phones

Author: Matt Sharp

The interface, the way you interact with your phone, is more important now than it's ever been before. Let's take a look at 3 phones that each have something unique about them, and that have their own sleek, brilliant interfaces.

Sony Ericsson Idou - the camera contender

If there's one thing that's not in any doubt about the Sony Ericsson Idou, it's that its camera will be astonishing. At 12 megapixels, that's a given, but the Sony Ericsson Idou also contains Cyber-Shot technology, for even better photos. But then, it also includes music technology from the Walkman range, making the Sony Ericsson Idou and equally accomplished music phone. Finally, there's its interface, as the Sony Ericsson Idou runs on Symbian... but not just any old Symbian, because the Sony Ericsson Idou also has a custom interface on top, with gesture controls and finger sweeps the order of the day. In fact, it may very well be the nicest Symbian phone on the planet.

Toshiba TG01 - the powerhouse

Meanwhile, Symbian's rival Windows Mobile is being taken to dizzying new heights in the Toshiba TG01. Whereas the Idou is a smartphone that concentrates on its entertainment features, the Toshiba TG01 is an all-round smartphone that deals in raw power. That's because the Toshiba TG01 not only has the biggest screen on any mobile phone (4.1 inches), but it also has the fastest processor ever found in a phone, coming in at 1GHz. That gives the Toshiba TG01 lots of power, and THAT means that Windows Mobile can run to its full potential. Combine that with a unique, custom interface on top, and whilst the Sony Ericsson Idou is the best Symbian phone, the Toshiba TG01 is the best Windows Mobile phone ever made!

Palm Pre - the sleek one

So, representing Symbian, you have the Sony Ericsson Idou, with its double-hit combo of astounding camera and music. Flying the flag for Windows Mobile, there's the Toshiba TG01, with astonishing power and an immense screen. But we're discussing interfaces here, and one phone beats both of these powerhouses hands down: the groundbreaking Palm Pre. You see, the Palm Pre is built on an entirely custom interface called WebOS, that is easily the slickest, most intuitive interface that's ever been released. With intuitive gesture controls and finger sweeps for EVERY action on the phone, the Palm Pre also brings in tight integration between its apps. Book a cinema ticket on one app, and the Palm Pre automatically updates your calendar with the time. Multitask many different apps, and watch the Palm Pre run without any effort or lag. In the world of interfaces, essentially, the Palm Pre just cannot be beaten!

Three Symbian touch phones to rock your world

Author: Matt Sharp

Symbian has been a mainstay of the mobile world since the early days of smartphones, but in 2009, it's really coming of age with its new touch variant. Let's take a look at three phones that really show it off.

Nokia N97 - a true mobile multimedia computer

Nokia have a history of making some of the coolest smartphones ever made, with their Nseries, and with the Nokia N97, they've really outdone themselves. Basically, the Nokia N(7 gives you all the benefits of Symbian Touch, but also includes a full QWERTY keyboard, designed to make your life easy when it comes to things like texting, emails, live chats, or even just typing in web addresses. It also has a 5 megapixel camera, great music player, and more importantly, the Nokia N97 32Gb of built-in memory for you to actually store lots of music, movies and photos. The Nokia N97 is closer to being a computer than any phone in the Finnish manufacturer's history.

Samsung Omnia HD - mixing Symbian with the best video in the business

Whilst the Nokia N97 focuses on the messaging and comms side of things, the new Samsung Omnia HD takes a different route, and it's a unique one, so far: the Samsung Omnia HD is the only phone in the world capable of recording genuine, true HD (high definition) video, at a massive 720p resolution (making the Samsung Omnia HD perfect for capturing videos in HD to upload to Youtube). Of course, it will also capture still images at 8 megapixels, and since it also uses Symbian, the Samsung Omnia HD is a genuinely powerful phone. But it's definitely the video this device will be most recognised for.

Sony Ericsson Idou - the ultimate smart camera phone?

Whilst the Samsung Omnia HD is going to be remembered for being the first HD video phone in the world, the Sony Ericsson Idou is going to be remembered for something else, albeit also camera-related. That's because the Sony Ericsson Idou is the first phone announced for the UK to have a 12 megapixel camera, and thus, provided no other 12MP shooters beat it to market, the Sony Ericsson Idou will be the most powerful camera phone on the planet at launch. The fact it also features advanced Cyber-Shot technology will only aid in that goal. Once again, it's powered by Symbian Touch, although in this case, it's a version higher than the Nokia N97, and so, even more powerful. And while it lacks the hardware keyboard and huge memory, in every other way, the Sony Ericsson Idou easily bests ALL of its rivals!

iPhone applications that does not make it to the AppStore - Treasures lost to the customers

Author: Stig Kristoffersen

AppStore has over 30.000 applications on offer to you at the moment. Apple AppStore is a success with almost 1 billion downloads up till now.

However, there is a flip side to this story. Lot of developers’ makes applications for the Apple products IPhone and IPodTouch but their products never makes it to the AppStore.

Applications that utilize certain functionalities in the iPhone like cut and paste, video recording, streaming, MMS, filesharing through Bluetooth and batch processes does not make it to the AppStore.

Apple also reserves them to prohibit applications that do not fit into the vision of Apple iPhone usage, like podcasting, direct access to the GPS and competing email and web browser clients.

iPhone 3.0 firmware will make it possible to utilize some of these functionalities, but not all. Therefore there is a development of jail breaking of the iPhones. These hacked versions of iPhones can utilize the capabilities that Apple do not want users to use, even in the new firmware 3.0.

Some developers complain about the discrimination of applications launched on AppStore as they seem to be of competition reasons mostly, to the disadvantage of Apple.
This question the AppStore as a sole provider of applications to the iPhone, and will maybe force the upcoming of competing AppStore’s in the near future.

Apple has not taken any special efforts in fighting the distribution of applications made for the hacked versions of the iPhone as it may have a positive effect on the iPhone concept, as it creates a positive buzz and creative development around the product.

There are 10 applications that Apple does not promote on the AppStore, and they are;

Clippy that make it possible to cut and paste text between applications. This is a functionality iPhone users have asked for since the launch of the iPhone. You can copy a text message and paste it into an email. Clippy does not work with Mobile Safari though. This functionality is promised to be in the 3.0 firmware version of the iPhone.

Cyntact makes it possible to get pop-ups of the pictures of your contacts when you browse through your contacts list and not only when they call you as you do in the original iPhone software.. This enables you to quick get information you have on a person, either using names or pictures.

Voicemail Forwarder can forward sound messages to anyone with an email address. As iPhone solution acts as a receiver portal for sound messages only. The purpose of being able to do this is to either archive or forward funny messages to others.

Cycorder: enables you to take both pictures and videos with your iPhone, which is not possible on the standard edition of your iPhone today. The software makes it possible to record a video with up to 15 captures pr second in a resolution of 384 x 288 pixles.

MxTube: makes it possible for you to see Youtube videos on your iPhone if you do not have access to internet. MxTube enables you to watch your favourite Youube videos offline.

MiVTones: software makes it possible to play any video as a ring tone when someone is calling you. So its an advanced ring tone, instead of the standard audio version you can do on your standard iPhone. You can select between various videos for the various contacts you have in your contacts list, and share videos with others that use this application.

Adblock: is a add-on to Mobile Safari, as it filters out most of the advertisments on the websites you surfe. Then you do not have to suffer from slow downloads of web pages filled with ads in them.

FindMyi: makes it possible to find your phone at any time, anywhere through FindMy’s web page. The application makes it possible to track your phone with the help of the built in GPS functionality of your phone. FindMyi runs in batch mode all the time and does not conflict with other operations on the phone.,So if you fear your phone is stolen or lost, you can salvage data and lock the phone through this software and their web page.

Which smartphones should you want to buy in 2009?

Author: Matt Sharp

Smartphones have always been big business, but this year, they're set to get even bigger, and a selection of new phones in 2009 look set to make them all the more important: the Nokia N97, the Toshiba TG01, and the astounding Palm Pre.

Nokia N97 - a touch of Symbian

If we're discussing smartphone software, Symbian has always been one of the big names in the market, and the most up-to-date, touch-based version continues that upstanding tradition, in the body of the Nokia N97. You don't just get a touchscreen, though, since the Nokia N97 has also got a full QWERTY keyboard, that makes texting, live chat and emails so easy to do on the move. As for what else it can do, the Nokia N97 will also impress with its 5 MP camera, awesome multimedia player (which includes video playback that simply has to be seen to be truly appreciated), a huge 32Gb of storage space, and super-fast web access. Basically, the Nokia N97 is amongst the best phones in existence.

Toshiba TG01 - Windows, but nice

Whilst Symbian has been evolving competitors Microsoft haven't been resting on their laurels, and the new phone to show off Windows Mobile is the super-powerful Toshiba TG01. It doesn't just have the biggest screen ever found on a mobile phone, weighing in at 4.1 inches, but the Toshiba TG01 also has the most powerful processor ever used in a mobile phone. Dubbed Snapdragon, the 1GHz, multi-core chipset gives the Toshiba TG01 raw power, and since that's what's needed to let Windows Mobile run at its optimum level, the Toshiba TG01 is arguably the best WinMo phone that's ever been announced.

Palm Pre - the new hotness

However, there's a new kind on the block, which wants to take the smartphone crown all for itself. The Nokia N97 and the Toshiba TG01 both both have raw power, but what the new Palm Pre goes for is sheer elegance. With the brand new, unprecedented 'WebOS' powering it, the Palm Pre brings touch-friendly interactions and innovative design to a whole new level. For example, consider the new Fandango software which should be available when the Palm Pre is launched. It's an online cinema booking app, which lets you purchase tickets and watch trailers on your phone. However, even the Nokia N97 will most likely be able to do that. The Palm Pre, however, can also automatically add a note in your calendar, and contact people who are going with you, to let them know when and where. It's that kind of integration, and interplay between features that makes the Palm Pre the best candidate for phone of the year.

The phones everyone will love in 2009!

Author: Matt Sharp

There's no doubt that mobile phones are amongst the top gadgets people want. But why do we have this love affair with mobile phones? When you get right down to it, what makes mobile phones so special?

From little acorns, big trees grow - The history of mobile phones

So, where did it all begin? Where did the rich variety of mobile phones we see in the world today actually come from? Well, the idea for a cellular-based system (the keystone of all modern mobile phones) was first proposed in December 1947, as a possible way of setting up wireless communications. It would go undeveloped, though, until the 60's and 70's. On top of that, the very first mobile phones are very definitely stone age compared to the modern breed. Before it all went digital, analogue phones were the standard (ones like the Motorola 'Del-Boy' phone), and they were unreliable, power-intensive, and weighed as much as a small town.

But still, the potential was there, and when mobile phones went digital, they crossed the divide from yuppies' toys into communication devices for everyone. We went from calls, to calls and text messages, to calls, text messages and the internet, to... well, who knows where we'll go in future! One word can sum up the state of mobile phones, though, and this is probably why, more than anything else, they've taken off so massively in the last few years: convergence. In other words, mobile phones do more than just phoning people, pulling in technology as disparate as music players and cameras. They do more, and therefore, you can do more with them, as ably demonstrated by the following three phones...

Nokia N97 - the smart choice

After the triumphant launch of the Nokia 5800, which was only ever meant to be a mid-range phone, Nokia needed a new top-ender to really wow the public. And that top-ender is the hyper-powered Nokia N97. It takes the brand new Symbian Touch interface, and adds in bags more power, as well as a full QWERTY keyboard. Even starting with the looks, it's a truly stunning phone, with sleek surfaces and a minimalist design making the Nokia N97 truly a beautiful sight to behold.

However, the impressive nature of the Nokia N97 doesn't end with the exterior, as it's what's inside that really impresses. It's quite simply an astounding phone.

Palm Pre - the ultimate in convergence, with the best interface?

the Palm Pre is new in every sense of the word. With Windows Mobile growing in user-friendliness and raw power, it's down to a brand new operating system to really wow us. Say hello to WebOS, as found in the stunning Palm Pre. This takes phone interfaces to a whole new level, easily surpassing the supposed king of mobile phone interfaces, the iPhone. The Palm Pre does this by simple expedient of being at least as user friendly as the iPhone, but with vastly more power and potential. Everything becomes interconnected and synergised, so that the contacts menu on the Palm Pre links into your maps, which links into the browser, which links into email and so on. Everything is interconnected and intuitive, and on top of that, the Palm Pre has one extra thing that the iPhone can't manage: true multitasking.

Sony Ericsson Idou - the ultimate Symbian phone?

Announced at the Mobile World Congress, the Sony Ericsson Idou takes the same Symbian OS seen in the Nokia N97 (which is a good comparison, as both are keyboard-less), but refines it, adding a bespoke Sony Ericsson interface on top. It's much more optimised for finger control than either of the Nokias, and because of that, the Sony Ericsson Idou takes the crown in terms of usability. In terms of features, it may not have the QWERTY keyboard you get with the Nokia N97, but with a massive screen, and a much slimmer body, that's not an issue. Oh, and of course, it matches its features (except for built-in memory), but the Sony Ericsson Idou has one killer feature that beats the N97 hands down: the camera. The Idou is the first phone announced for the UK that features an enormous 12 megapixel camera. It may lack the keyboard and built-in memory of the Nokia N97, or the altogether 'new-ness' of the Palm Pre, but all-round, it's the more powerful phone. It's so good that many are predicting it may well be the phone of the year!

Samsung Tocco Ultra Joins Dedicated 3G Network - Tocco Ultra Edition

Author: susan hargreaves

Samsung's first ever device to feature both a full colour touch screen alongside a slide out 4 x 3 keypad has now been released on the only dedicated 3G network in the UK - 3 Mobile.

After being originally launched on O2 pay monthly deals back in January of this year the Samsung Tocco Ultra has found its way onto Orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile networks, but this latest network launch is one of the most exciting as 3 Mobile offer the best value for money for the number of inclusive free minutes and text included in their tariffs.

The Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition is the manufacturers flagship mobile phone for 2009 and is available in both a red and blue colour scheme, the colours relate only to the accents on the exterior and the slide out keypad and not the entire casing colour which in both instances is a brushed metal effect grey.

This new Smartphone from Samsung promises great quality pictures. With an inbuilt 8 mega pixel camera, which helps in getting a great resolution of the video shots, as well as astounding clarity and quality in the videos shot, this sure can make shooting, and being shot, all the more fun. And the AMOLED 'Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes' touch screen has nothing less than 16 million pixels, offering a pellucid view of the videos shot, and that too with a better contrast, deeper blacks and high definition.

The Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition has the ability to shoot 30 frames a second enhances the quality of the video, with almost all movements getting captured without any blur, even those of fast moving objects. Digital zooming allows magnifying and focusing only on the parts we require, while rejecting the ones we don’t need. The camera also comes with an inbuilt LED flash, so gone are the days when one required a high power light to get the near-lifelike photo .The same feat can be achieved by simply using the inbuilt flash. The camera also supports auto focus, so that the user may take great snaps, without being a pro, as the camera does the essential but tough task of focusing.

A new feature that has been introduced by this phone is face detection. It is a technology that determines the location and size of a human face in the photo being taken, and ignores the background objects like rivers, trees etc. This excellent technology had so far been limited chiefly to digital cameras. Samsung also improves its smile detection in this phone.

Video editing software is also available, which will minimize the use of computer for editing purpose. The phone being powered with 3G provides users the option of making video calls to other users having compatible 3G phones.

The Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition also possesses integrated GPS technique. It provides A-GPS function, along with camera geo-tagging for landmark and friends, and route 66 navigation. This ensures that you are not left circling around that new road or town you just felt like discovering a few minutes back, but are unable to find your way back now. Geo tagging allows users to capture the time, date and location of the shot beneath the captured photo to revive the sweet memories whenever they view the photo again.

But, all these features would be meaningless, if the cell didn’t provide enough memory to preserve all these, especially since the resolution is higher, and requires more memory space. This problem too is resolved, by the phone having 80 MB internal memory, and 16 GB expandable memory. Thus in spite of storing a multitude of photos, the speed and memory space will be affected only marginally.

All in all, a great phone to invest for, if you are looking for some great quality videos, with some enviable extra features like document viewer and good internet facilities thrown in. This handset is packaged in a thin and terrific 12.7mm attractive shell and is available from free on all UK networks.

The Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition is now available on O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone and 3 Mobile plus as a Pay As You Go and SIM Free handset, the only remaining UK network to offer the Tocco Ultra is Virgin Mobile.

Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Review

Author: Nicolas Setiono

Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Review

This Dell Netbook was very thin, only 0.9 inch and make the look like Apple MacBook Air. Lightly to take it anywhere you want. This netbook also not slippage when being held because the backend of this netbook is a bit rough. The glossy white cover also not so diligent collecting fingerprint impressions.

Black accents are shown in the direction of the back of the prominent unit, near the hinge, located adjacent to the battery location. Yes, the battery for Dell Inspiron Mini 12 is black, very contrast with the top chassis which have color white milk. In the part of this non glossy black color there is tiny LED that will light up white when the netbook is being switched on or charging the battery.

There are lot's of thing that look unusual here. First, the display screen with 12.1 inch, high resolution, 1280x800 pixel make me very comfortable when surfing the internet using this netbook even i can opening 2 web page together side by side and reading it with comfort. The words was look normal, not small. The view on the screen also bright and the horizontal perspectives was good enough, enough comfortable to look from the side. However, there will be more better to push back the screen so that the reflection effect is not too felt.

Second, the keyboard is relieved (92% normal keyboard). The distance between the button is width and make me comfort to typing on it. The tuts are soft enough. On the top side, except F1-F10 buttons, there is six key which functioning independently which is F11, F12, Home, Del, Insert and End. The Fn button it self are being located at the right side of the bottom of this netbook. The other thing which feel wide is the touch panel which is little stringy but responsive but because of the wide of the palmrest, sometime the touchpad was occasionally jog with our wrists and suddenly move the cursor.

From the features, Mini 12 was similar with others netbook. There are Wi-Fi 802.11 g, Webcam 1.3 megapixel, card reader 3 in 1, a headphone jack, microphone jack, 3 USB Port, 1 LAN port, VGA Out Port and Kensington Lock. The back and front side of this netbook was clean.

At least when i'm using it, the back end of bottom screen unit which is close with the battery was felt hot but the touchpad and the keyboard was not influenced too much which mean are still comfortable when using this netbook. The bottom of the netbook was only slightly warm. This can be happened maybe because the combination of the wide of netbook surface and low power processor affecting the hot spread.

To make it more friendly, Dell also put Dock on the desktop. This panel show up big icon on the left side of the screen. However the location of the dock can be moved by drag and drop from the desktop or from the Start Menu.

This Dell Inspiron Mini 12 was not different so much with other netbook. More thin but with wide screen and keyboard make this netbook are comfortable to use and easy to take. The adapter which look like a cell phone also very light (178 gram). In short words this netbook was very suitable for anyone who like practice, beauty and the function but do not want being burdened with heavily netbook.

There will be more better if Dell not come with Vista because the processor (Z530) which are being used are less support for Vista and the memory also cannot be upgraded. The 3 cell battery also need 1 hour 52 minutes to fully charge and need to increase with 6 cell battery.

Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Specifications :

  • Processor : Intel Atom Z5301,6GHz (Cache L2 512KB, FSB 533MHz, Hypertrading Support)
  • Memory : SODIMM 1GB (maximum)

Are megapixels all that matter in camera phones?

Author: Matt Sharp

The trend in camera phones is to have more and more megapixels. But is simply piling extra pixels into a camera phone enough to make it the best there is, or is something else needed?

Nokia N97 - the 5 megapixel contender

Let's start this journey through the world of camera phones with a true smartphone from Finland, the Nokia N97. If this was an article about smartphones, then the Nokia N97 would very probably walk away with the title, but the focus here is ONLY on the camera, and what makes it special. The Nokia N97 is equipped with a 5 megapixel camera, something that, surprisingly recently, was considered the highest end camera you could get on a phone.

Five megapixels is a little bit passe, now, but the Nokia N97 doesn't just rely on its pixel count. Instead, with the Nokia N97, you get top-end Carl Zeiss lenses, to make sure that the actual sensor is getting the crispest image that it can. So, whilst the Nokia N97 may only have 5 megapixels (and that's a big 'only'), it does make sure that the image that is recorded onto those 5 million pixels is as sharp as can be.

Samsung Omnia HD - 8 megapixels and HD video

Next up, we journey into the realm of 8 megapixel camera phones, with the Samsung Omnia HD. The difference in pixel count is noticeable, but even more than that, Samsung make some of the best camera optics in the phone world, making the Samsung Omnia HD a truly wondrous camera phone. However, it also has a trick up its sleeve that no other camera phone can yet match: true HD video recording. The Samsung Omnia HD is the only phone in the world at present that can record true high-def video, and that's sure to give it a competitive edge.

Sony Ericsson Idou - the best camera phone in existence?

No run down of the best camera phones would be complete without the phone that's due to arrive in October. The Nokia N97 may have 5 megapixels, and the Samsung Omnia HD may sport 8, but the magnificent Sony Ericsson Idou has a massive 12 megapixel camera. Whilst the number of megapixels isn't the ONLY concern in a camera phone, there's no denying that the extra 4 million pixels the Sony Ericsson Idou has IS going to make a difference. However, even here, it's not just about megapixels here, as the Sony Ericsson Idou is also loaded with Cyber-Shot technology such as autofocus, smile detection, and a wealth of other options for improving your photos. It's also the only phone of these three that has a true xenon flash, so the Sony Ericsson Idou is really the only one that will take decent photos in darkened locations. So, as you can see, whilst the number of megapixels is important, equally as important is what else the camera on a phone has built-in, and because the fact it has the most megapixels and the most extra tech, the Sony Ericsson Idou is quite simply light years ahead of the other two phones on display here.

Two Symbian phones are all set to battle it out in the second half of the year: the Nokia N97 and the Sony Ericsson Idou. But which is better? Let's find out.

The blue corner - Nokia N97

Our first contender is the Nokia N97. It takes the Symbian touch interface, and adds a full QWERTY keyboard, a bigger display, and a huge 32Gb of storage space. There aren't many phones on the market that can beat it for sheer power, and, frankly, the word 'powerhouse' is the best way to describe for the Nokia N97.

In addition to the obvious extra benefits you get from a QWERTY keyboard, it also includes a bigger camera than its predecessor, the Nokia 5800, coming in at 5 megapixels. It effortlessly switches from phone to camera, letting you leave your separate camera at home. It's quite simply an astounding phone.

The red corner - Sony Ericsson Idou

But then, so is the Nokia N97's rival, the formidable Sony Ericsson Idou.

Announced at the Mobile World Congress, the Sony Ericsson Idou takes the same Symbian OS seen in the Nokia 5800 (which is a good comparison, as both are keyboard-less), but refines it, adding a bespoke Sony Ericsson interface on top. Whilst the two are evenly matched in many areas, the Sony Ericsson Idou has one killer feature that beats the N97 hands down: the camera. The Idou is the first phone announced for the UK that features an enormous 12 megapixel camera. It may lack the keyboard and built-in memory of the Nokia N97, but many say it's a better phone. In the end, though, the two phones don't HAVE to compete against each other. The Nokia N97 is the clear choice for its messaging capabilities, but if you want a better camera phone, then you just have to pick the Sony Ericsson Idou.

LG Arena - why the interface is king in the mobile world

Author: Matt Sharp

As mobile phones go on evolving, it's become clear that one of the most important factors in whether you buy a phone is how you interact with it. Nowadays, the interface is king. Let's take a look at the LG Arena (amongst others), to see exactly what mobile phones are now capable of.

LG Arena - a whole new class of interface

Key to the incredible experience the LG Arena gives you is its interface, as it's the first phone to use LG's new S-Class UI. To visualise it, imagine a 3D cube, sitting on the screen of the LG Arena, and on each side of the cube, there are things like shortcuts to apps, links direct to your music, or other widgets that you can customise yourself. The fun part comes when you interact with the LG Arena, as you simply swipe across the screen, to rotate round those faces, and get to what content you want. It's remarkably intuitive, but more importantly, it makes the LG Arena fun to use, and that is a BIG selling point in 2009.

Toshiba TG01 - making Windows usable

You may be asking yourself why a Windows Mobile phone is in a run-down of the coolest, sleekest interfaces, but the Toshiba TG01 achieves something important. It's one of the first WinMo phones to actually make the operating system usable. Of course, you get a bespoke interface, sitting on top of Windows Mobile, with the Toshiba TG01, that has a multi-coloured, almost Venetian Blind-like effect. But what really matters is what's under the hood, since Windows Mobile needs two things to run at its best: a big screen, and a fast processor. Since the Toshiba TG01 has both a 4.1 inch screen, and a 1GHz processor, it is easily capable of making Windows Mobile as slick and user-friendly as its rivals.

Palm Pre - an interface like nothing ever seen

However, both the LG Arena and the Toshiba TG01 pale in comparison to another phone that's due to be launched soon. That phone is, of course, the Palm Pre, and it brings to the party not only the slickest, most intuitive interface ever seen on a phone, but a level of integration that surpasses anything on the market. The Toshiba TG01 may be able to do email, and it may have extensive contacts options, but the Palm Pre is able to automatically pull your contacts from different sources, such as Facebook, to integrate each person into one contact card, that has ALL their info on. The Palm Pre can use the Fandango app to book cinema tickets and then, without you lifting a finger, enter it into your calendar, and email the friends you're going with. That's the mark of a truly incredible interface, and it's no joke to say that it almost feels like the Palm Pre is doing all the thinking, so you don't have to. Quite simply, when it comes to the Palm Pre's UI, no other phone on the planet can beat it.

Sony Ericsson Idou confirmed for release in October

Author: Matt Sharp

News has cropped up online that the highly anticipated Sony Ericsson Idou has finally been given a release date, in October. Let's take a look forward and see what competition this super-phone is going to face.

Sony Ericsson Idou - 12 megapixels of pure power

It's fair to say that the Sony Ericsson Idou is easily one of the most hotly anticipated phones of the year. On the face of it, the big reason for the excitement is its 12 megapixel camera, and whilst that is a force to be reckoned with, there's so much more to the Sony Ericsson Idou. It's the first 'Entertainment Unlimited' phone, and that doesn't just mean it combines Cyber-Shot and Walkman technology. On top of that, the Sony Ericsson Idou is also going to pull in social networking, high quality games and incredible video services to become a one-stop mobile entertainment hub. It promises far more than that, however, as the Sony Ericsson Idou is also powered by Symbian, giving it true smartphone capabilities, which will no doubt include its very own app store.

But it's a long time until October. Let's see what rivals the Sony Ericsson Idou will have to face down.

Samsung Omnia HD - true HD video

Whilst the Idou may be the undisputed king of still photography (for now), the Samsung Omnia HD must surely be the new king of mobile video. There's a very good reason for that, as the Samsung Omnia HD is the first phone in the world to record true HD video, at 720p resolution. Combine that with HSDPA and high speed uploads, and you have the makings of the perfect high-def Youtube phone, with the Samsung Omnia HD. Whether it will be enough to beat the combination of an ace camera AND Symbian that makes the Idou so compelling remains to be seen, but the Samsung Omnia HD is certainly set to make a big splash. Probably not big enough to topple the Sony Ericsson Idou, but it certainly will be worth checking out.

Nokia N97 - the other Symbian contender

So, with the Samsung Omnia HD unable to topple the Idou, it falls to something a bit more powerful. It may not have HD video recording, but the Nokia N97 does have Symbian, and that puts it on a more even footing with the Sony Ericsson Idou. So, the Nokia N97 has all the processing power to match its rival, and for its part, it includes a full QWERTY keyboard, and 32Gb of built-in memory, that the Sony Ericsson Idou lacks. So, in the end, the two phones are pretty evenly matched, and it's going to come down to what features you want, as to which you'd prefer. For the heavier messaging types, and people who want a full keyboard, the Nokia N97 is the obvious choice. But if you prefer a massive camera, and all your entertainment needs met in one phone, then the clear choice has to be the Sony Ericsson Idou.

Mobile apps - the way of the future

Author: Matt Sharp

Mobile apps are growing in popularity, every day, with all the top smartphones supporting downloadable software. Let's take a look at 3 of the newest and best phones for using apps with.

Nokia N97 - Symbian

As it runs on the newest, touch version of Symbian, you would expect the Nokia N97 to support a range of apps. Well, it does, and not only that, but the Nokia N97 (as well as all Nseries phones, in future) will soon be getting its very own app store, called the Ovi Store. This'll make adding apps to your Nokia N97 a breeze, and give you access to a whole range of extra features. Possibly the most powerful app that's headed our way from Nokia, though (and it will surely find its way onto the Nokia N97), is Point 'N' Find, a service that lets you point the phone's camera at an object (currently only film posters, but more services are planned), and then the phone auto-searches for info, by recognising the object. So, just point your Nokia N97 at a movie poster, and then you'll be able to watch the trailer, look at images from the film, or even book tickets online, all from your mobile!

HTC Magic - Google Android

However, if you want a phone with a true app store already set up, then you need the HTC Magic, complete with its Android Marketplace. The HTC Magic makes it easy for you to download extra software, by simply pressing the Marketplace icon, and selecting the software you want. It's that easy, with the HTC Magic. The coolest app seen for Android so far? Simply point your HTC Magic at a barcode, and it will find the product for you, and not only find it for the cheapest price online, but use the GPS to find out where it's in stock near you!

Palm Pre - WebOS

However, there's a phone that can top even the magic tricks of the HTC Magic. That phone is the Palm Pre, and it brings a whole new level of clever-ness to its apps. Take, for example, the Fandango app which should be available at the time the Palm Pre gets launched. Like Point 'N' Find on the Nokia N97, it allows you to find movie times online, and book tickets for wherever your nearest cinema is (albeit without the camera trickery). However, the Palm Pre goes one step further, by automatically updating your calendar with an appointment to go to the cinema, and it can even automatically notify your friends, who are going with you, that the tickets are booked. The Palm Pre pulls all its features together, and links everything in to make your life as easy as possible. It's also said to be one of the easiest phones in the world to code for, so the chances are that if you can think of any feature you'd like, someone's already created it for your Palm Pre!

The next evolution of smartphones - TG01, N97 and Pre

Smartphones have always been big business, but now, they're bigger than ever, and three mobile phones in 2009 look set to increase their profile: the Nokia N97, the Toshiba TG01, and the incredible Palm Pre.

Nokia N97 - the Symbian contender

Symbian's always been one of the most popular smartphone OS-es in the mobile world, and the latest, touch-based incarnation carries on the fine tradition, in the shape of the Nokia N97. However, it's not just about touchscreens, as the Nokia N97 also comes with a full QWERTY keyboard, that makes messaging, chat and emails a breeze. In terms of other features, the Nokia N97 also impresses with its 5 megapixel camera, a brilliant multimedia player (including video playback that just has to be seen to be believed), a huge 32Gb of memory, and HSDPA internet access. Put simply, the Nokia N97 is one of the coolest (and yet also the hottest) phones out there.

Toshiba TG01 - Windows Mobile goes powerhouse

While Symbian has gone down the touch-based route, rivals Windows Mobile haven't been resting on their laurels, and the new fruit of their labours is the ultra-powerful Toshiba TG01. Not only does it have the biggest screen ever seen on a mobile phone, measuring in at 4.1 inches, but the Toshiba TG01 also has the most powerful processor put into a mobile phone. Called Snapdragon, the 1GHz, dual-core processor gives the Toshiba TG01 sheer grunt, and as that's what's needed to let Windows Mobile live up to its full potential, the Toshiba TG01 is arguably the best WinMo phone that's ever been announced.

Palm Pre - the new (and incredible) kid on the block

Nokia N97 - what phones might stop it from dominating the world?

Author: Matt Sharp

The Nokia N97 is soon going to be mounting an assault to be the phone of 2009. But there are a few phones standing in its way. Let's take a look at two of the best.

Nokia N97 - why is it so good?

One of the big reasons why the Nokia N97 is so anticipated, and why it'll no doubt sell like hotcakes, is the Symbian S60 Touch interface it uses. A brand new operating system, Symbian S60 Touch gives the Nokia N97 a finger friendly interface, and on top of that, the phone has a built in QWERTY keyboard, so it has more ways to access the phone than ever before. It's not just about the interface, though, as the Nokia N97 is packed with high-end features. A 5 megapixel camera makes for superb photos, the multimedia playback is stunning, and with HSDPA and GPS, it's not short of connectivity options.

However, let's see what phones could knock it from its perch.

Palm Pre - the intuitive option

If we're talking interfaces, then the Palm Pre easily outdoes the N97, as it uses Palm's new WebOS software. Put simply, this is the most touch-friendly user interface to ever appear on mobile phones, and it's led some to say that the Palm Pre out-iPhones the iPhone. But then, it is the most intuitive and simple interface ever seen on a phone, with finger swipes and other gesture controls being the order of the day. Okay, the Palm Pre may be the least powerful phone in this article, in terms of features (having only a 3 megapixel camera, although it does have HSDPA and GPS), it outdoes the Symbian S60 Touch interface by being clever, to the point where it even seems like the Palm Pre is doing your thinking for you. No other phone has that level of user interaction!

Sony Ericsson Idou - the powerhouse contender

If the Nokia N97 is the all-rounder in this contest, being best described as a mobile multimedia computer, and the Palm Pre is the sleek- sexy contender, then the third phone must be the powerhouse camera contender. It is, of course, the Sony Ericsson Idou, the first phone announced for the UK to feature a massive twelve megapixel camera. It doesn't just sell itself on the camera, though, as the Sony Ericsson Idou also uses a stunning multimedia player, based on Walkman technology, and features the Symbian S60 Touch OS (like the Nokia N97), to give it true smartphone credentials. Wrap that up with a new front-end that's almost as slick as the Palm Pre, and it may well mean the N97 is going to lose the battle for phone of the year, to the awesome Sony Ericsson Idou.
