Symbian - Taking Mobile Phones Into The Future

Author: Matt Sharp

One of the big operating systems in the world of smartphones has always been Symbian, and this year, 3 phones are aiming to take it to new heights. Let's take a look at the wonders on display...

Nokia 5800 - Nokia's first mainstream touchscreen

A couple of new phones from Nokia have brought Symbian into the world of touch; they're the first two mainstream Nokias that have touchscreens. First, we have the Nokia 5800. The 5800 doesn't have a keyboard at all, so the touchscreen and interface are vital. It's an incredible interface too, with full touch controls, and a magical user experience, letting you the most from your phone.

However, the Nokia 5800 ISN'T a top-end, uber-smartphone device. It was always meant to be a mid-tier handset, and although the Nokia 5800 is stunning, it's left a nice gap at the top of their product range for their OTHER new touch phone.

Nokia N97 - adding QWERTY into the mix

And so, say hello to the Nokia N97. It takes the Symbian touch interface, and adds a full QWERTY keyboard, a bigger display, and a huge 32Gb of storage space. There aren't many phones on the market that can beat it for sheer power, and, frankly, the word 'powerhouse' is the best way to describe for the Nokia N97.

In addition to the obvious extra benefits you get from a QWERTY keyboard, it also includes a bigger camera than the 5800, coming in at 5 megapixels. Without a doubt, the Nokia N97 is the most advanced Symbian phone in production at the moment. It won't stay that way, though, because another upcoming phone is definitely going to steal its thunder...

Sony Ericsson Idou - more powerful than the average country...

As things stand at the moment, the Nokia N97 is the most advanced Symbian phone you'll be able to lay your hands on, beating out its lower-end cousin, the Nokia 5800. However, it WILL be overtaken, because at the Mobile World Congress 2009, a new Sony Ericsson device was announced. And it's a monster! Called the Sony Ericsson Idou, it has the same Symbian software, but with a custom interface on top, that's more incredible than anything on Earth. Sleek animations move you between screens, and the music player, built with Walkman technology, is second to none. However, it has one, huge, not-so-secret weapon, because the Idou from Sony Ericsson is the first phone to feature a TWELVE megapixel camera. Because of that, and because of the superb interface, there's simply nothing out there that can touch (no pun intended) the Idou...

The Top Phones You'll Want To Buy In 2009

Author: Matt Sharp

2009 has already seen the launches of some amazing phones . Let's look at 3 that show off their respective interfaces at their absolute best: the Toshiba TG01, the Nokia N97 and the astonishing Palm Pre...

Toshiba TG01 - Power Windows

There's no doubt that Windows Mobile is powerful, but the new Toshiba TG01 shows just how powerful it is. The huge 4.1 inch screen and the ludicrously fast 1GHz processor give Windows a whole new lease of life, removing any of the 'clunkiness' Windows phones of long ago may have had. In the case of the Toshiba TG01, Windows Mobile is allied to a brand new, 3D interface, with a series of 3 revolving strips that contain all your apps and shortcuts. The animations and actions of the interface are smooth and beautiful, and the Toshiba TG01 proves that as far as operating systems go, Windows Mobile is still one of the hottest properties in the world.

Nokia N97 - a true handheld computer

With the Nokia 5800 all set to deliver touchscreen mobile phones to the mid-range market, that leaves a very big gap at the absolute top-end of the product range; well, there IS a touch-based mobile phone on its way to fill that gap: the frankly awesome Nokia N97. This uses the same Symbian S60 Touch interface and crams it within the shell of a proper, full-tilt smartphone. Which means it's got a massive, 3.5 inch screen, a slide out QWERTY keyboard, and the camera's been upgraded to 5 megapixels.

The Nokia N97 is, obviously, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it's genuinely as powerful as the rumours said, with HSDPA, sat-nav, digital compass, and integrated Flash, meaning you get an internet experience that tops any other mobile phones! Put it like this: the Nokia N97 is unbelievable. It easily outdoes other mobile phones and while the Nokia 5800 (or, to give it its development name, the Nokia Tube) angles to take over the mid-range, I'm predicting that the Nokia N97 will totally DESTROY the competition next year!

Palm Pre - the most innovative phone ever...

There's one soon-to-be-upcoming phone, though, that can top even the heady power of the Toshiba TG01. That may be the pinnacle of Windows Mobile's evolution so far, and the Nokia N97 may have a brand new version of Symbian to run on, but the Palm Pre is new in every sense of the word. With Windows Mobile growing in user-friendliness and raw power, it's down to a brand new operating system to really wow us. Say hello to WebOS, as found in the stunning Palm Pre. This takes phone interfaces to a whole new level, easily surpassing the supposed king of mobile phone interfaces, the iPhone. The Palm Pre does this by simple expedient of being at least as user friendly as the iPhone, but with vastly more power and potential. Everything becomes interconnected and synergised, so that the contacts menu on the Palm Pre links into your maps, which links into the browser, which links into email and so on. Everything is interconnected and intuitive, and on top of that, the Palm Pre has one extra thing that the iPhone can't manage: true multitasking. The Pre is simply one of the most important phones ever to have been announced!

Can Symbian Dominate The World Of Mobile Phones?

Author: Matt Sharp

With smartphones becoming the big thing in the world of mobiles, the operating system is becoming ever more important. Let's take a look at one of the most well-established software platforms out there: Symbian.

Nokia 5800 and N97 - taking Symbian to new heights

Two phones from Finnish manufacturer Nokia have opened up Symbian to the modern world, as they're the first two to include full touchscreens. First up is the Nokia 5800, part of their XpressMusic range. The 5800 features a keyboard-less design, making the touchscreen and the interface all important. And what an interface it is, with full finger-touch controls, and a superb user experience, that really gets the best from the phone. Of course, the Nokia 5800 is more than just an operating system, and features such as the 3 megapixel camera, super-fast internet access and the brilliant XpressMusic media player lift it above its rivals. However, one thing the Nokia 5800 isn't is a top-end, uber-smartphone device. It was always designed to be a mid-range phone, and as good as the Nokia 5800 is, that leaves a gap at the top of their product range.

Well, that's where the Nokia N97 comes in. It takes the Symbian touch interface, and builds it into the body of a true smartphone, with sliding QWERTY keyboard, a larger screen, and a massive 32Gb of built-in memory. There are very few phones on the market that can match it for sheer performance, and... well... the word 'powerhouse' could have almost been made exclusively for the Nokia N97.

Sony Ericsson Idou - the ultimate touchscreen phone

As things stand at the moment, the Nokia N97 is the most advanced Symbian phone you'll be able to lay your hands on, beating out its lower-end cousin, the Nokia 5800. However, it WILL be superseded, and it will lose its crown, because at the recent Mobile World Congress, a new phone from Sony Ericsson was announced. And it's a beast! Called the Sony Ericsson Idou, it features the same Symbian touch software, but with an added interface on top, that's sexier than anything seen before. Smooth, fluid animations are the order of the day, and the music player, derived from Walkman technology, beats everything else out there. However, it has one, huge, not-so-secret weapon, because the Idou from Sony Ericsson is the first phone to feature a TWELVE megapixel camera. Because of that, and because of the superb interface, there's simply nothing out there that can touch (no pun intended) the Idou...

The Big Mobile Phones Of 2009!

Author: Matt Sharp

With the Mobile World Congress currently wowing crowds in Barcelona, one fact is increasingly becoming clear: the modern breed of mobile phones needs to have an intuitive interface, to wow consumers. So, let's take a look at three of the best: the Toshiba TG01, the Palm Pre, and the astonishing Sony Ericsson Idou.

Palm Pre - new and unprecedented

Toshiba TG01 - taking Windows Mobile to new levels

Announced before MWC, the Toshiba TG01 is nonetheless making a starring appearance at the show. With the incredible specs of the phone it's easy to see why, as well. Not only does it have the biggest screen of any mobile phones on the market, but the Toshiba TG01 also has the fastest processor, too, coming in at over 1GHz. That puts it firmly in 'laptop-power' territory, but with the standard WinMo interface, it would still be a clunky experience. Luckily, it doesn't rely on the standard WinMo interface, instead using a bespoke 3D interface, custom designed for the Toshiba TG01. Best described as a series of revolving panels, it has a Venetian blind feel to it, with left and right swipes of the finger revealing different shortcuts and apps, as the 3D strips revolve in an incredibly smooth and fluid way. It really is a joy to use, and that's the reason why, as well as being the most powerful Windows Mobile phone to date, it's one of the nicest to use!

Sony Ericsson Idou - Entertainment Unlimited

As good as the Toshiba TG01 and the Palm Pre are, however, the real star of the show at this year's MWC has been a new touchscreen phone from Sony Ericsson, and it truly is a beast. The interface in the Sony Ericsson Idou is what will evolve into the Symbian Foundation software (effectively, it's Symbian S60 Touch, as used in the Nokia 5800), with a custom Sony Ericsson interface on top. And what an interface it is, with smooth, fluid finger controls, and instant access to your media and important apps. However, the Sony Ericsson Idou fuses that interface to much more power than the Palm Pre, as it's also the first 12 megapixel phone to be announced in Europe. In essence, the Idou combines a truly sumptuous operating system, with a truly magnificent camera... and if that isn't enough to make it the phone of the year, I don't know what is!

Facebook Phone Wins Phone Of The Year 2009 - What Will Win In 2010?

Author: Matt Sharp

As we come to the end of the Mobile World Congress, this year's 'Best Mobile Phone' has been announced: the little Three INQ1, the Facebook phone itself. Let's take a look at how it won, and look forward to what will take its place next year...

Three INQ1 - the Facebook phone is phone of the year

There's no denying that the Three INQ1 is something special. It has precisely none of the smartphone functionality you get from the big boys, and yet, it managed to beat them all off, to win the title of Phone Of The Year. That's some achievement, but when you look at what the Three INQ1 will do, it's actually not that big a surprise. There's a reason why this little beauty is nicknamed the Facebook phone. Many manufacturers have noticed the popularity of social networking, of sites like Facebook and MySpace, but no phone has had the same level of integration the INQ1 has.

Take, for example, its phonebook. A standard feature across all mobile phones, and something that doesn't inspire admiration, right? Well, in the case of the INQ1, it does, as it's more like a living, evolving entity. It automatically updates your contacts with their newest Facebook pics, and status, so it's constantly changing to keep your social network up to date. Combine that with one-button access to Facebook, and simply the best social networking access seen on a mobile phone, and you're onto a winner. As I said, it's glaringly obvious why it's called the Facebook phone, and that alone is why it was able to hold back the big boys, and claim the award for itself.

A big congratulations, then, to the team behind the Facebook phone; you heartily deserve your award!

2010 - which phone will become phone of the year?

With the Three INQ1 Facebook phone scooping the title this year, it's time to look forward and try to make an educated guess as to what will win in 2010. The first, obvious contender is the Idou, from Sony Ericsson, a phone so new it doesn't even have a proper model number yet. However, even at this early stage, the Idou certainly seems to have the chops to make it the biggest phone of the year. Certainly, the first phone that has both a 12 megapixel camera AND the first build of the new Symbian Foundation operating system just can't be ignored! It's going to face some stiff opposition, though, because right out of leftfield is a phone that includes a sleek operating system unlike anything seen before, and even tighter Facebook and social networking integration than seen on the INQ1. That phone is of course the Palm Pre, and its sheer 'new-ness' could land it the top spot. Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: it's going to be an exciting year for mobile phones!

Big Screen Windows Phones - Htc Touch Hd Vs. Toshiba Tg01

Author: Matt Sharp

With Windows Mobile making its big charge into the world of high-end media phones, devices with big screens are naturally going to do better. Let\'s take a look at the two biggest screens on the market today: the HTC Touch HD and the stunning Toshiba TG01.

HTC Touch HD - go with the FLO

Windows Mobile is an incredibly powerful beast, and it\'s run in some of the most powerful phones on the planet. However, when you get down to it, some of the icons and menus can be a little bit, well, fiddly. In taking over the Windows design ethos to mobile phones, Microsoft carried over things like scrollbars, which, when translated to a smaller screen, are pretty much only realistically usable with a stylus. That\'s why so many phones are coming out with their own interface on top of Windows, and why phones with bigger screens are the best option.

If you\'re talking big screens, there\'s no way you can avoid the HTC Touch HD, as for a few months, it held the record for the biggest screen seen on a mobile phone. At 3.8 inches, it is truly vast, and the high, 800x480 resolution makes it genuinely easy to use things like scrollbars in menus. However, the HTC Touch HD actually does a very good job of making it so you don\'t have to go into standard Windows menus that often, as on top of the operating system, the interface is HTC\'s patented TouchFLO 3D setup, where everything is achieved through various finger swipes and sweeping gestures. It is truly intuitive, and it\'s the reason why the HTC Touch HD is such an unmitigated joy to use. Of course, it\'s not all about being pretty, a phone needs to have decent features and the HTC Touch HD has them in spades, from the 5 megapixel camera, through GPS, to incredibly fast HSDPA internet access (not to mention the superb Opera Mobile web browser). To any, the HTC Touch HD is the ultimate Windows Mobile phone.

However, it no longer has the honour of having the biggest screen in the land, because it\'s been usurped by a phone from a company who have not much of a history of making mobile phones at all...

Toshiba TG01 - the new benchmark

For several months, the HTC Touch HD held the crown as having the biggest screen on a mobile phone, but that\'s not true any more, because the Toshiba TG01 tops it. Coming in at a massive 4.1 inches, it\'s almost half an inch bigger than screen on the HD, so for things like the internet, and videos, the Toshiba TG01 is really the king of the hill. It\'s not just about screen size, though, because the Toshiba TG01 also has processing power. Lots of it. Its chipset comes in at over 1GHz, taking into realms only previously available on laptops. And since it\'s a new generation of \'Snapdragon\' processor, it\'s also incredibly efficient, meaning it won\'t drain your battery in minutes. The Toshiba TG01 is truly a wondrous device, and is quite simply (having stolen the crown from the Touch HD and the X1 Xperia from Sony Ericsson) the most powerful Windows Mobile phone ever made!

Intuitive Phone Interfaces - The New Black

Author: Matt Sharp

With the Mobile World Congress currently wowing crowds in Barcelona, one fact is increasingly becoming clear: the modern breed of mobile phones needs to have an intuitive interface, to wow consumers. It really is a joy to use, and that\'s the reason why, as well as being the most powerful Windows Mobile phone to date, it\'s one of the nicest to use!

Palm Pre - new-ness personified

When the Palm Pre was announced, many people immediately compared it to the iPhone, due to its fluid menus, intuitive operating system, and sleek design. However, that\'s an unfair comparison. Not unfair on the Pre. Unfair on the iPhone, because quite frankly, the Palm Pre leaves it for dead! The interface is truly like nothing we\'ve ever seen before, with full swipe and gesture control, and a touchscreen that actually extends beyond the screen itself. The experience of using the Palm Pre is like no other, with a fluidity and interconnectedness you just won\'t fin on other mobile phones.

Sony Ericsson Idou - Entertainment Unlimited

As good as the Toshiba TG01 and the Palm Pre are, however, the real star of the show at this year\'s MWC has been a new touchscreen phone from Sony Ericsson, and it truly is a beast. The interface in the Sony Ericsson Idou is what will evolve into the Symbian Foundation software (effectively, it\'s Symbian S60 Touch, as used in the Nokia 5800), with a custom Sony Ericsson interface on top. Countdown to Mwc 09 - Toshiba Tg01 and Palm Pre

    Author: Matt Sharp

In a few days, the biggest event of the mobile calendar will begin: the Mobile World Congress. Let's take a look forward to 2 of the superstars that will be on display there: the Toshiba TG01 and the astonishing Palm Pre.

Toshiba TG01 - Windows Mobile evolves

Windows Mobile phones have had a tendency, in the past, to be a bit clunky. The interface wasn't the best, and that ruined all that power they had. Nowadays, though, a raft of phones have appeared that put the ghost of old Windows Mobile phones to bed, phones like the Sony Ericsson X1 and HTC Touch HD... and now, the Toshiba TG01, the most powerful mobile phone EVER made. That's not an exaggeration, the Toshiba TG01 is the first phone in history to have a 1GHz processor, taking its performance way beyond any mobile phones before, into laptop territory. Combine that with a unique 3D interface on top, and at 4.1 inches, the biggest screen of any mobile phone, and the Toshiba TG01 is all set to take its rightful place as the most powerful and best Windows phone that's ever been released.

Of course, Microsoft themselves will be announcing something new at MWC 09, and that's a whole new version of Windows Mobile, version 6.5. This is designed to take the power that phones like the Toshiba TG01 have in spades, and fix on top of it Microsoft's own, new interface, that far surpasses their previous efforts, and aims to make Windows Mobile as user friendly as something like the iPhone.

Palm Pre - you've NEVER seen a phone like this before...

Meanwhile, while Windows Mobile phones are going for raw power, another phone is set to make its debut in the flesh, and it's one that goes down a different route, having less power than the TG01, but being far more elegant. It's sleek, it's innovative... it's the Palm Pre, and it's possibly the most exciting mobile phone that's ever been released...

Where the Toshiba TG01 has gone for a recognised operating system and piled on the power, the Palm Pre has taken a different route, looking more at how the operating system should work, and then building both hard ware and software (called WebOS) from the ground up; believe me, the end result is a massive achievement! It has even more user friendliness and slick graphics than the iPhone, it's as modifiable as Google Android, and it's not far off the power of Windows Mobile. True multitasking is handled in style, and everything is accomplished with sweeps and swipes of the fingers, making the interface on the Palm Pre a real gem. It always feels fluid, and accessing apps and software is handled in such a natural, flowing way, that it's hard to imagine any other phone topping the Palm Pre for sheer usability. It is, quite simply, astonishing, and since it and the TG01 will make the other manufacturers sit up and take notice, you can be sure that others, like Nokia, or Sony Ericsson, will be bringing their A-game to the party, at MWC 09.

    Nokia 5800 + Nokia N97 - an In-depth Look

    Author: Matt Sharp

The world of touchscreen mobile phones is starting to get exciting, as the most recognised brand in the business has brought out not one, but TWO mobile phones: the sleek Nokia 5800 and the terrifyingly awesome Nokia N97.

Nokia 5800 - the power of music

First up is a whole new member of Nokia's Xpress family of music mobile phones, the mouth-watering Nokia 5800. This phone is quite obviously made for music and video; you can tell by the separate XpressMusic button that brings up a list of links to music, videos, the web, and more. Oh, and the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touchscreen, to let you muck about with those different media files. Basically, the Nokia 5800 was designed as a teeny handheld jukebox and movie player, and as music handsets go, this is easily one of the sexiest.

The Nokia 5800 has also got a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA internet access and sat-nav, making it a wonderful all-round mobile phone, on top of being a brilliant media gadget. Oh, and it's got a strap to attach a fake guitar plectrum. That rocks. However, the Nokia 5800 is very definitely a mid-range phone; it's not, nor will it ever be, a full-fat top-end monster. That position falls to a separate device...

Nokia N97 - the power of power

Latest Technological Inventions - Futuristic Inventions Revealed

    Author: William Lund

The electronics revolution shows no signs of slowing down. When I was a youngster we had dial telephones, AM radio, and black & white TV with a tall antenna on the roof. We did not have microwave ovens, cell phones, computers, FM radio, or GPS systems and there were no satellites. Well hang onto your hats, because the revolution has just begun…

X-ray vision is already here… sort of.

Knowing that radio waves can pass through solid materials, in 2006, engineers at Cambridge Consultants in the UK announced they had built a device they called the Prism 200 which can detect people through a brick wall. The briefcase-sized system works by transmitting pulses of ultrawide-band radar and listening for returning echoes.

According to the company, these pulses can pass through building walls over 16 inches thick, and detect human beings behind those walls over a range of up to 50 feet. The device can only detect people when they are moving.

Erwin Biebl's radar sensor. Biebl's team at the Technical University of Munich in Germany has built a device that can pick up tiny motions like breathing, or even a beating heart, through a closed door. His device uses Doppler radar to sense small movements caused by the beating of a heart or the movement of the lungs as one breathes.

It’s not a big leap to envision a system worn on the head like night vision goggles. Think of how valuable that might be in hostage situations, fire fighting, and urban warfare.

Invisibility, not just for Star Trek and Harry Potter

In 2006, a cloaking device was which worked only for microwaves, was unveiled. Since then there have been a number of attempts to make invisibility cloaks.

Scientists have developed “metamaterials”, made with electronic components that interact with light and send it in the desired direction. The idea is to steer the light around the object. If the light goes around it then you won’t see it. So far it only works with specific bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, the goal being to create something that works with a broad band of frequencies. The components however, must be smaller than the wavelength of the light they are steering, making them very small.

Recently, a group at the University of California, Berkeley, constructed a material that was able to bend visible light backwards for the first time, and Ulf Leonhardt at the University of St Andrews, UK, has demonstrated how metamaterials could work over a range of frequencies.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in China is claiming that it has worked out how to cloak objects at a distance. They suggest using "complementary materials" which have optical properties that cancel each other out making it look as if neither material is there.

They have a long way to go, but don’t be surprised if someday you don’t see something that is right there in front of you.

    Unique new sources of energy

All those gadgets…your laptop, cell phone, ipod, and all those other gadgets use electricity. Batteries run down and then what? How about running those devices with power from your clothing?

In 2008, Zhong Lin Wang at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta wove a fabric made from zinc-oxide nanowires grown on strands of Kevlar. Each time the material is bent or squeezed, it generates a tiny current. Wang and his team found they could harvest it by coating each fiber with a film of metal. Just plug your cell phone into your pants and start walking.

US soldiers in Iraq are using a device that could become a universal interpreter. SRI International in Menlo Park, California, has developed the system, IraqComm, used by the soldiers, packing a laptop with speech recognition and language translation software.

When someone speaks into the microphone in Arabic, the software turns the phrases into written Arabic, and then translates it into English. When the person finishes talking, the computer speaks the translation.

IraqComm's software, and other programs like it, learn to translate by studying conversations. The software searches for statistical connections between a series of Arabic statements and English translations. Given enough examples, the software can learn grammar too. A similar system running on a hand-held PDA was developed at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

These programs cannot deal with free-flowing language yet. The IraqComm works well because it focuses on around 50,000 words soldiers need. The broader the subject matter, the harder it becomes for the software to distinguish the alternate meanings required in different contexts. "We'll get there," says SRI's Kristin Precoda.

It probably isn’t unrealistic to assume that in a few years tourists visiting foreign lands will carry with them portable speak-into devices.

    Nokia N97 and 5800 - an Overview

    Author: Matt Sharp

Anyone who likes touchscreen phones should be excited; the biggest brand in the game has waded in with not one, but TWO mobile phones: the sleek Nokia 5800 and the completely awesome Nokia N97.

    Early Nokia touchscreens

Most people seem to be under the false impression that the Nokia 5800 is the first touchscreen phone to wear the Nokia label. It's not. Actually, there have been a few touch-based phones released under the Nokia name. Starting with the 7700, there have been a few Nokia mobile phones that are controlled by you prodding and poking the screen. They all shared pretty big touchscreens, but there was a feature they had in common:

Unfortunately, they were all irredeemably awful.

Just one of those handsets, the 6708, showed a modicum potential, but that was destined solely to be sold in China, and thus, it never saw the light of day in these sceptred isles. Unfortunately, that meant that the phones we got were total, and complete toss. However, these unpleasant mental images have now been removed because of the debut of two new Nokia mobile phones, both of which have touchscreens, and both of which are much, much more alluring...

Nokia 5800 - music for the soul

The first phone up is a totally new member of Nokia's Xpress family of music mobile phones, the stunning Nokia 5800. This phone is very obviously made for music and video; you can tell by the separate XpressMusic touch-key that brings up a list of links to music, videos, the web, and more. Then, of course, the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touch-sensitive display, to actually play with those different media content.

Basically, the Nokia 5800 was designed to be a teeny portable jukebox and movie player, and as music phones go, this is just about the prettiest. The Nokia 5800 has also got a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA data connection and GPS, making it a wonderful all-rounder, in addition to being a superb media box. Oh, and it has a strap to fasten on a fake guitar plectrum. That's pretty cool, that. Despite all those features, the Nokia 5800 is very definitely a mid-range device; it's not, nor was it ever meant to be, a full-on top-end monster. That position goes to a separate device...

    Nokia N97 - mind-blowing mobile computer

With the Nokia 5800 on course to bring touch-based mobile phones to the mid-range market, that leaves a great big gap at the absolute top-end, and yes, there IS a touch-based mobile phone waiting to be unleashed to take its place as the top-end powerhouse: the frankly jaw-dropping Nokia N97. This uses the same Symbian S60 Touch interface seen in the 5800, and crams it inside the frame of a proper, full-on smartphone. So it has a massive, 3.5 inch screen, a flip out QWERTY keypad, and the camera now weighs in at a meaty 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, obviously, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it's genuinely as hyper-powered as we'd heard from rumours, with HSDPA, sat-nav, digital compass, and built-in Flash, so that you get an internet experience like no other mobile phones! Put simply the Nokia N97 is simple incredible. It easily outdoes other mobile phones and while the Nokia 5800 aims firmly for the mid-range, I'm predicting that the Nokia N97 will totally DOMINATE the world in 2009!

Can the Palm Pre and Toshiba Tg01 Knock the Iphone From Its Perch?

    Author: Matt Sharp

As we approach the Mobile World Congress 09, two phones are set to cause a big stir in the industry, both of which are aiming to take on the iPhone at its own game. Let's take a look at the two competitors, and ask whether the Toshiba TG01 or the Palm Pre could be the phone that knocks the Apple contender for six...

Toshiba TG01 - the most powerful phone ever made

There have been a few contenders for the title 'iPhone Killer' which have run on Windows Mobile, and with good reason, as it's quite plainly a very powerful operating system, that has an awful lot going for it. There have only been one or two real stand-out handsets, though, most notably the Samsung Omnia and the HTC Touch HD. However, they're both about to be put firmly in the shade thanks to the launch of the most powerful mobile phone ever made, the Toshiba TG01. But why is it the most powerful phone ever made?

The answer lies within the processor hidden inside the Toshiba TG01, as it's the first phone in the world to come with a 1GHz chip. Or, in other words, it's little short of a laptop in the body of a mobile phone. So, the Toshiba TG01 promises to be faster and smoother than any other mobile phone on the market. Ally that with the unique 3D interface running on top of Windows Mobile, and you get a phone that truly is a joy to use. There's also one other fact that can't be denied...

Quite apart from it being hyper-fast, with an incredibly fluid interface, the Toshiba TG01 also has the biggest screen on the market, coming in at an unbelievable 4.1 inches. That's a lot of real estate on screen, and it means that even previously fiddly menu bars are now finger-friendly, given the massive screen size. And as for the virtual keyboard on the Toshiba TG01, the extra size makes it little different from typing on a physical keyboard. Add in the rage of impressive features, including a 3 megapixel camera, broadband-fast internet access, a superb music player and GPS, and it adds up to a simple fact:

The Toshiba TG01 is quite simply the best Windows Mobile phone ever made, and whilst it doesn't have the cool factor of the iPhone, the TG01 utterly canes it in every other way.

Palm Pre - a phone like NO other

Where the Toshiba TG01 goes for raw processing power, the Palm Pre takes an entirely different route, going instead for elegance. It may not be as powerful as the TG01, but the Palm Pre contains the most fluid and innovative interface ever seen on any phone (and yes, that includes the iPhone). Everything is done using finger swipes and gestures, with a remarkably fluid homescreen that lets you multitask many different apps at once, from mail, to contacts, to web, to video, to absolutely anything you have running on your Palm Pre. The gesture controls make the entire experience remarkably intuitive, and using the Palm Pre for the first time is a genuinely astonishing experience. Of course, it isn’t just about being swish, as the Pre also gives you such small but very useful touches, such as typing on the keyboard, from the homescreen, to search the device, your apps and the internet for what you need, or having a touch-sensitive area that extends below the screen, to make gestu7re control even more fluid, all of which adds up to make the Palm Pre the most user-friendly, and remarkable phone that's appeared on the market in a long, long time. Of course, they won't have it all their own way, because such luminaries of the industry as Nokia and Sony Ericsson will also be bringing their A-game to the Mobile World Congress this year, but one thing's for sure. Between the double-header of the Toshiba TG01 and the Palm Pre, every phone on the market (yes, including the iPhone) should be afraid. Very afraid...

Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97 - Focus on Technology

    Author: Matt Sharp

The world of touchscreen mobile phones is starting to get exciting, as the most recognised face in the industry has brought out not one, but TWO mobile phones: the sexy Nokia 5800 and the unspeakably mind-blowing Nokia N97.

Many people are under the false impression that the Nokia 5800 is the first touchscreen mobile phone Nokia have ever made. It's not. Actually, there's been several touch-based phones released under the Nokia badge. Beginning with the 7700, we've seen a couple of Nokia mobile phones that work by you pressing directly on the screen. They all shared pretty big touchscreens, but unfortunately, they shared something else: they were irredeemably rubbish. Just one of those devices, the 6708, displayed any potential, but that was destined exclusively for the Chinese market, and thus, it wasn't meant for us in Britain. The mobile phones WE got were, and I use this phrase with much feeling, utter, and complete bobbins. However, those unpleasant memories have all been removed due to the debut of a pair of new Nokia mobile phones, both of which come with touchscreens, and both of which are so much more alluring...

Nokia 5800 - sound, vision and touch

The first phone up is a completely new entrant into Nokia's Xpress line of music mobile phones, the gorgeous Nokia 5800. This phone is very obviously designed for music and media, as it has a dedicated XpressMusic touch-key which pops up a list of shortcuts to music, videos, the internet, and so on. Then, of course, the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touchscreen, to let you use those different media content. Basically, the Nokia 5800 was designed as a teeny handheld jukebox and movie player, and as music phones go, this is just about the sweetest. The Nokia 5800 also has, built-in, a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA data access and sat-nav, so that it's a superb all-rounder, in addition to being a wonderful media gadget. Oh, and it has a lanyard to clip on a fake guitar pick. That rocks.

However, the Nokia 5800 is very definitely a mid-range device; it isn't, nor will it ever be, a full-fat top-ender. That position belongs to another handset...

    Nokia N97 - mind-blowing...

With the Nokia 5800 on track to deliver touchscreen mobile phones to the mid-range market, that leaves a great big gap at the absolute top-end, and yes, there IS a touchscreen mobile phone coming soon to fill that gap: the frankly mind-blowing Nokia N97. This uses the same Symbian S60 Touch interface as the 5800, and crams it into the body of a proper, full-on smartphone. Which means it's got a massive, 3.5 inch screen, a flip out QWERTY keypad, and the camera now weighs in at a meaty 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, in a very definite way, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it really is as high-spec as the rumours had us believe, with HSDPA, GPS, digital compass, and integrated Flash, meaning you get an internet experience like no other mobile phones! Put simply the Nokia N97 is unbelievable. It gleefully relieves itself over other mobile phones and while the Nokia 5800 aims to take over the mid-range, I reckon that the Nokia N97 will totally DOMINATE the world next year!

Virgin Media - the New High Speed Broadband Service for 2009

    Author: Caroline Telford

Do you like the idea of downloading an entire music album in less then 11 seconds? Or do you want to grab an 800 megabyte high definition movie file in just 3 minutes? If you answered yes to both, then Virgin Media has a ready solution for you.

The powerhouse UK cable company is offering an astonishing 50 MB broadband connection for all UK households. This is the fastest net speed in the history of UK and is considered as the next generation service for 2009.

Talk of Virgin's 50 MB high speed connectivity plan has been circulating throughout the Internet. Naturally, this created a buzz in the online world especially with British tech bloggers and news sites.

Last December 2008, Virgin Media announced that it will unveil the fastest broadband service for the general public in the year 2009. This will put the UK cable company at the top of the list of the fastest ISPs in the entire country. Virgin started trial testing the service last year on several households in Kent.

Different Plans for More Flexible Service

Virgin Media is offering different broadband service plans for UK households. According to the company, such flexibility of service will allow UK consumers to choose which plan would be best for them.

First, you can avail of the triple play service which is actually a bundled plan consisting of a dedicated landline subscription, 50 MB broadband service, and cable TV service. The triple play plan will cost 66 Pounds per month.

According to the company, such bundled service plan is ideal for new subscribers and households that want to share several broadband connections. The ultra fast Internet connection will be able to handle multiple users on a single router without significant degeneration of connection speeds.

Consumers can also opt to avail of broadband-only service if they do not want to take the cable TV and landline services. This service will cost 55 Pounds per month. Virgin media said such plan would be ideal for educational institutions with several computer consoles sharing a connection.

With the 50 MB superfast broadband connection, an entire computer laboratory will be able to enjoy high speed Internet service for every user.

Internet Infrastructure Issues that Face Virgin's High Speed Service

Virgin Media is a reliable provider of high speed Internet connection for many years already. Customers have been satisfied by the quality of service and reliable Internet connection provided by the cable company.

The biggest issue facing the ultra high speed broadband plan is the Internet infrastructure of UK. Some technology analysts contend that most telephone lines on UK still use copper wiring. Such telephone technology will not be able to handle fast connections and might result to quality of service issues.

UK communication regulators said that it will take 15 billion Pounds to upgrade the public telephone system. Government regulators however are optimistic that such upgrade would benefit the country in the long term.

For now, Virgin's 50 MB broadband service can only be enjoyed by 16 million British households. Government officials and company executives agree that high speed connectivity would be socially and economically beneficial for the entire country.

Nokia N97 and 5800 - a Match Made in Heaven

    Author: Matt Sharp

Nokia are making their play for touchscreen domination with not one, but TWO separate mobile phones. Let's take a look at the phenomenal duo of the Nokia N97 and 5800.

Many people are under the false assumption that the Nokia 5800 is the first touchscreen mobile phone Nokia have ever made. It isn't. Actually, there's been several touch-based phones to wear the Nokia name. Starting with the 7700, we've seen a few Nokia mobile phones that work by you pressing directly on the screen. They all had reasonably big (for their time) screens, but unfortunately, they shared something else: they were irredeemably hideous. Only one of these handsets, the 6708, displayed a modicum promise, but it was made solely for China, and so, we never got to play with them in the UK. So, we were relegated to handsets that were total, and complete bobbins. However, these bad memories have all been removed because of the launch of two new Nokia mobile phones, both of which come with touch-sensitive displays, and both of which are so much nicer...

    Nokia 5800 - musical whizz

First on the list is a completely new member of Nokia's Xpress family of music mobile phones, the stunning Nokia 5800. This phone is pretty obviously built for music and media, as it has a separate XpressMusic button that opens a list of links to music, videos, the web, and more. Oh, and the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touchscreen, to actually play with those different media files. Basically, the Nokia 5800 was designed as a little portable entertainment centre, and as music phones go, this is easily one of the sweetest.

The Nokia 5800 also has, built-in, a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA internet access and sat-nav, making it a brilliant all-round mobile phone, on top of being a wonderful media gadget. Oh, and it's got a lanyard to attach an imitation guitar pick. Pointless, but brilliant.

However, the Nokia 5800 is very definitely a mid-range phone; it's not, nor will it ever be, an absolute top-ender. That position belongs to a separate mobile...

Nokia N97 - power and beauty

With the Nokia 5800 on course to bring touch-based mobile phones to the mid-range market, that leaves a huge, yawning gap at the very top-end, and yes, there IS a touchscreen mobile phone on its way to take its place as the top-end powerhouse: the frankly awesome Nokia N97. This takes the same Symbian S60 Touch operating system and packs it inside the shell of a proper, full-on smartphone. So it's got a massive, 3.5 inch screen, a flip out QWERTY keyboard, and the camera's been upgraded to 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, in a very definite way, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it really is as hyper-powered as we'd heard from rumours, with HSDPA, GPS, digital compass, and built-in Flash, so that you have an internet experience like no other mobile phones! Put simply the Nokia N97 is awesome. It easily outdoes other mobile phones and while the 5800 aims firmly for the mid-range, I reckon that the Nokia N97 will totally DESTROY the competition next year!
